  1. Re:How efficient are they? on NASA Tests Hydrogen-Fueled BMW · · Score: 2, Informative

    Very Good Point.

When myself and a buddy of mine did a research project on the production of CO2, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter of various H2 production methods using a bunch of DOE data, and if my memory serves me correctly we found that using H2 fuel reduced CO2 emissions by about 15% from the most efficient current form of H2 production (Coal Gassification) as the power transfer through the H2 cells was more efficient that burning gas and the gassification process is more efficient than burning fossil fuels. The greatest impact was on SOx and NOx production which went down about 20%.

Although electrolysis seems great, most of the energy in this country is produced from coal or natural gas, which still puts us in the same situation. The one example I can think of where a large amount of clean energy is produced is in the pacific northwest where a significant amount of energy is produced from hydroelectric generators in dams. The American aluminum industry is based up here in the northwest because of the cheap energy which goes wholly unused at night(as aluminum cannot be smelted, it must be electrolyzed from ore into pure Al). In an area like this H2 could be produced cheaply and with a small ecological footprint. Electrolysis, however, is still a very inefficient manufacture method for H2 production.

Well, I guess the best thing to do is to hope for nuclear fusion to finally reach break-even!

  3. Interaction with "normal" peers necissary on The Prodigy Puzzle · · Score: 1

Well, at my university we have a program which admits highschool and middle school aged kids (youngest I have heard of is 12 years old). Many of these kids are extremely intelegent, but I must say that (to different degrees) all of the kids I know who came through this program (many of which are my friends) are socially maladjusted.

On a day to day basis, many of them are able to interact with the normal aged college students, but it is not so much at the social but the academic level. I am not saying they have to aquiece to social norms, but they still need to develop the social skills to interact with a broad range of individuals and make friendships if they are going to be successful.

Being in this program these highly intellegent kids are effectively being retarded socially. Social skills are developed by interacting with a broad range of people much of which I believe happens in high-school and college. By isolating them from kids in their age group they are unable to learn social skills. It is hard for a 15 year old kid to make friends with a bunch of 20 year old college kids. The age gap in social and personal maturity is staggering.

For example, one of the kids coming out of this program (age 13 at the time), had the impulse to find out how much energy would be produced if he turned me into pure energy. Now, being a science nerd I was understanding, but your average kid would think he was wierd.

Anyways, I have ranted and not really said much. Still, I think it is important to support smart kids (I came away with a good education because I went to a good private school, but most kids aren't as lucky as I was), but I think there needs to be programs established in highschools and middle schools to support advanced children where they can still interact with their peers and hopefully develop social skills important later in life. Plus it will be easier for them to get girlfriends/boyfriends in college ;-)

  4. Re:Hydrogen Power. on Combined Gasoline/Hydrogen Fuel Station Opens · · Score: 2, Insightful

It is very true that hydrogen is an energy storage medium, a battery if you will. However using a battery rather than a heat engine in your car has two advantages over the old technology:

    1. Your car is no longer subject to the Carnot cycle, therefore you can use most of the energy stored within the battery (hydrogen) you are carrying. Now, you may be thinking, the coal used is subject to the carnot cycle, but coal is not generally burnt but is reformed by steam to form hydrogen and CO2, which is largely more efficient than electrolysis via burning the coal.

    2. The CO2 production becomes a Point Source at the Hydrogen production plant (instead of being produced at each car), and thus can be treated more efficiently using emerging scrubbing techniques or Carbon Dioxide sequestration.

The Major problem with Moving totally to H2 cars is that we would see a drop in CO2 emmisions, but there would be little to no drop in NOx, SOx, Volitile Organic and Particulate Matter emissions (all of this data can be found from goverment databases). The problem is that coal has large amounts of mainly Nitrogenous and Sulphurous impurities, and there isnt technology in place to scrub enough of those impurities out of the CO2 after combustion or reformation.

Anyways, the only way we are going to be able to do this is to start transitioning to green sources of energy soon, and anticipate the use of hydrogen as a "fuel" in the next 20 years or so. If we are going to use coal (like Bush wants us to) serious technological advances need to come into place, otherwise we may end up in a WORSE spot enviromentally.

  5. Victorinox swiss army backpacks on Advice On Notebook Backpacks? · · Score: 1

Througout highschool and now college, I admittedly thrash the hell out of my backpacks. I have gone through all of the major brands as well (Jansport, targus, etc.) and have destroyed them all. I have gone through broken zippers, torn compartments and bottoms of bags, I even wore the metal buckle off of a messenger bag from use! The best deal I have found are the victorinox swiss army laptop backapacks (which I currently own). They use balistic nylon instead of polyester (such as targus), and have a lifetime warantee(even though that I don't know exactly how long that really is...). Anyway, it is a good backpack, very light, and provides ample padding for a laptop. The one downside is the price, coming in at about $90-100. But still, check them out!

    1. First, when you buy Everquest(tm), all you buy is the software. Nothing else and sony has no jurisdiction over you. However when you subscribe to their service you join in a mutual contract between both parties which can be desolved on either end at ANY time. It works either way. If the user dislikes the game or whatever, they just call up and cancel their service. On the other end, If sony were to halt the production of everquest or if they decided to deny service to someone or anyone, they have that right.

    2. Sony doesn't have the right to sue the people selling their account, but they reserve the right to stop it at any time. They decided to do so.
The ONLY way the law suits would work was if SONY and the users had entered an Indivisible contract, where they created a contract where neither party could end the contract until a certain time. The lawsuits will come to no avail.

On a more personal note, I believe that buying a charater on Everquest defeats the purpose of playing the game. This game was made so you could work to progressivly create something, a charater with certain abilities and traits, that was unique from everyone else, but if you purchase someone else's account, that is just the same as putting you brain in somone elses purchased body.
