How about the re-writeability of a HD-based medium? What about the screen, and its ability to output several lines of text? Not a great deal, but about as much as a PDA used as a serial terminal, which has been done. Given that the need for a recovery medium presupposes a need for diagnosis, I'd say the iPod is more suited for this than almost anything, even a PDA -- just think how much space a core dump can take up, and you'll see what I mean.
Yeah, because the other 18 architectures on which Linux runs fine have this trouble never. Have you not realized that the kernel is tested on myriad processor/hardware configurations, and that there are other kernel devs who work with those alternate archs? Or have you simply never done a
cd/usr/src/linux
ls
to see just what's in the full kernel code? BTW, the arch/ and asm/ directories should give you some idea of how this all works.
Those both look like WindowMaker to my severely untrained eyes! Is there something specific in the libs to those above mentioned and WM that should really matter to me as a (potential, since I like the idea of a simple, easily-configured desktop) GNUStep user? How about to someone who wishes to use GNOME or KDE on top of GNUstep (is that possible? I know the panel apps would likely work, but explain it to me like I'm an idiot, please!)
I'm wondering why you're even bothering to ask other people for their opinion... you said it yourself, it works for your hardware. Do you download the shiny new version of any other software you run whenever it comes out? I don't mean this offensively, but you've already answered the question you pose, and it seems you just need to learn to think rationally about your needs and to have faith in your own decisions. I upgrade only when I read something from the changelog that I'd like to see working (better) (this means downloading every kernel (when I have the chance) since I want better ACPI and wireless support, among other things).
Is there something you're anticipating will change in an upcoming kernel? A quick grep through the changelog should tell you if you need it or not. Don't search ACPI, for instance, since there will be hundreds of minor changes; be more specific than that.
Linux is what it is (Free), and will *remain* what it is, because of the "religion". Having religion doesn't mean you have to attack other people, but it does mean preserving yourself in your own beliefs, or finding ways to adapt them. GNU does not feel any need to adapt, and the results have been quite good: Linux, the GNU tools, Gaim, OO.o, GNOME, GIMP, Samba, Apache (which has a compatible license last I knew)...
I get a little bit tired of people criticizing this point. Without the religious fervor, without defending the GPL, none of these things would be able to maintain an Open-and-useful state. I would hope that most of the Americans among us would defend to the death the rights contained in the US, even if it were not popular to do so. I bet people thought our fore-persons were being anal then, too.
You wouldn't tell your local preacher to shut-up for being a {bible,torah,koran,*}-thumper, would you?
What packaged software for Linux is there? StarOffice, UT2004, and Savage (the last two of which won't run out of the box anyway, and won't install off the CD without the Joliet extensions in the kernel). Even id's games require the Linux binaries to be downloaded.
What hasn't been mentioned is how much resistance he put up before deciding to move. If he hadn't put his foot down before this, it wouldn't have been an ultimatum by her. Now he's found himself making a compromise, which you're right, is what marriage is about. Her wanting to move to a rural area overrode any importance the city held for him.
As my suggestion, even a local college needs a CS professor. If you're gonna be in the CNY area, UC just lost their long-time dept. head!;)
Otherwise you can always do some minor computer "stuff" for a local grade school.
Well, think about it... you do a big film, then you can get away with some little films. (think about it)
OK, I'll bite.

But, of course, they'll come out soon with a record that can be re-written, and can store more data, called an EP-ROM!
What, no PDF? SVG?
Gah! that's constantly misquoted! It reads "Eat at Martha's"
Thank you
I know!
and since when would Evolution write songs about Creationism?

...not to mention Private P2P and Lieutenant Limewire
You're a redundant person, iPodBoy; that's the kind of person you are...
Great... now stop posting to Slashdot from a 20-char-wide emacs window!
(can't believe I'm berating the man himself on Slashdot!)
Aw, I was going to guess that!
...but you can get rid of those pop-ups by using a gecko-based browser!
package niece-0.0.4 depends on the following packages:
brother-stuff >= 0.2.0 *
sissy-face >= 0.2.2 *
recommended packages:
ttpw (Toys to Play With) >= 4.2
food >= 0.5
(This is probably not correct apt-get output, but bear with)
*based on what I call my own brotherstuff and sissyface
Yeah, they'll be 86'd soon enough.

As opposed to the $1600USD that the toshiba tablet PC costed (at my store we're finally getting around to selling the display model).
That makes the Linux one just over 3/8 the cost of the Windows one.
...that they make good mice and keyboards! :-D
because it's the newest, and uses the newest, fastest processor. That's kind of intrinsic, isn't it?

Silly vi zealot!
:D
You mean "C-x C-w" looks nothing like a floppy!
