CB distance is VERY limited. Ham radio is capable of much greater distances. Plus with ham radio, you can connect to a repeater with a handheld radio with very little power. A handheld CB trying to communicate over 2 miles would drain the battery in no time. But a CB is still better than nothing....
I've got my Tech class ham license for 2m and have HF equip. in case of emergencies. In case of emergency, you do NOT have to have a license, it is acceptable to transmit without a license in an emergency for emergency purposes.
Now for the winter months when they need heating, maybe they could harness the hot air coming out of the mouths of Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates to heat the city.

Oh, come on! People complain about wasted bandwidth for a lot of other things. We ALL know that 800mhz = 800Mhz, not everyone has a FCC license to know what letter to capitalize. Stop being so damn picky and save bandwidth for better arguments like AMD vs Intel.

I would love to see a commercial for something ambiguous like Nexium where they just say "Ask your doctor if Nexium is right for you" You go to the doctor and ask only to find out it's something like female birth control... Why on earth would someone ask a doctor if they need something before knowing what the hell it is supposed to fix.
Hypothetically speaking, what would a/. effect on SCO's toll-free phone number have if they were to continue this nonsense. I'm not suggesting anyone do this.

You can. There's ssh or telnet programs (I use all the time), and there's a great POP mail program called Snapper mail that is excellent.
