as for HP, i do not know what to say. i've been using Apple computers for a long time, i dealt with the mess of using HP printers in the 90's and since then i just don't feel comfortable buying their stuff.

i would not be suprised if a lot of this is ego. everyone knows that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are strange charcters, and you figure they have been crossing paths for 20 years now. add to that people under them that surely are loyal to the company and i'm sure it's just M$ flexing their PR muscles a bit.... or at least trying to.

  3. Re:Steve's thunder... on Macworld: No new Towers, But 17-inch iMac · · Score: 2

eh, not really. saying "new G4s" is nothing. many many people predicted a new iMac last January. a lot of those predictions were 17" CRT (now the eMac) or a 15" LCD. NOBODY predicted that it would turn out like it did.
same thing with the ipod. everyone was buying the iwalk rumors, so they lost focus on the more true leaks.
the most recent time i think Steve was really caught was with the leaks of the cube. it was on a few rumor sites, though nobody really had it quite right (most said it looked like a G4 case but pushed into a little cube, handles and all). before those leaks nobody expected a "new" mac. then ATI backed it up in a comment about their new card coming out at MacWorldNYC and how it would be featured in the new Mac Apple was going to suprise everyone with. OOPS! that one got Steve's goat.
anyway i can predict updates to whatever device i want, and of course something will happen. last year they kept saying "this is a software focused expo" and still updated the G4 towers (nothing too major, but and update) and bumped iMacs i think. next week will probably be the first legit public molestation of 10.2, and probably some tweaks to hardware. hopefully a revamped G4 tower will be there, but between a first hand look at xserve and 10.2/Jaguar i am ready to take the hike up there. anything on top of that is just bonus. of course i am hoping they will have at least a few machines with 10.2 if not more. last year they had a handful of machines running 10.1 but they were staffed so you could not poke at them too much. with the expected release date of it so near, i would think a solid build on the current powermacs is ready for display.

  4. they have released hardware during rebates before on Macworld: No new Towers, But 17-inch iMac · · Score: 2

that is 100% true, they have had a promotion run through the release of updated hardware. as confusing as it might turn out to be, i understand the rebate form has a checkbox for which system you bought (faster machine = bigger rebate). since only the current systems are on there, then new ones would not count unless they update the form. also remember the rebate is $x00 back on G4 tower and display. so if they release a new minitower, they can drop the price of the current ones and still run the promo. generally Apple sorta stays tot he same pricing structure. there are fluctuations depending on models and the cost of parts (like LCDs for the new iMacs).
then again there is also no reason they can't offer a package deal if you buy a new (if there will be new ones next wednesday) G4 and a flat panel display. the economy is just not doing so well, so selling machines at a lower price is better than not selling any machines. at least this way it keeps things flowing.
i'm not going to make predictions (i want to keep my badge, ha), but i don't see this being any indication to rule out new desktops.

i agree the clones would probably have done more damage in the long run. i don't know if the hardware still pays for the OS development (OS X selling really well), but it sure does pay for the purchasing/developing/tweaking of the iApps. Apple would be hard pressed to make money if there were clones and people could still get iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Appleworks for free as well as all the bundled apps with OS X itself. all they would get is the fee from the clone maker and the OS sales. as much as it killed competition in the marketplace (generally a good thing), i think it was the only option at the time.
on a side note as of last year it was still being reported that Microsoft was still making more money from Apple products than Apple themselves. i do not know if it still holds true, but it kind of puts things in perspective when you think of profits of hardware vs software. i'm not saying people can't profit from hardware, but it's a strange mess.

in a way i can see how they do this. why have an NDA if you are going to fire the people that leak info, yet reward the people they leak to? the story is that Apple pushed for this "lockout", but supposedly for whatever reasons Apple was going to tighten up on the sheer number of press passes in general. in they are going to do that i would think the web only rumor sites are the first to go.
the one crazy rumor site behind the iWalk fever, spymac.com, responded to this news by saying they totally see where Apple is coming from.
weather or not you agree with Steve Jobs being a control freak, he did get the company back in the black. he does seem to require a lot of control over things, and i guess it works for them. it is odd that they are doing this, though they have been strangely slack on sites showing screen shots and info on Jaguar (the next OS upgrade due out in late summer). you figure pushing Jaguar is going to be a big part of MacWorldNYC in 2 weeks and theya re letting a lott of that info out (where they used to make people pull screen shots within a few days).
anyway, they do seem to be a little silly with the tightness on passes, but in a way you can't be too suprised that they are not the happiest with sites that make a living off of people that violate they Apple NDA.

on top of the physical demands, every worker would have to be retrained as well as carry a conversion device for when they are repairing old systems that are a mix. the heater repair guy would need to carry both tools when working on a building's system. changing everything at once would be a mess. on top of that i guess suppliers would have to carry both sizes. we have some european machines in the small machine shop/manufacturing place i work. i know the first thing that was done (if not done by them time we got em) to them was to replace every nut and bolt on the machine, and retap every hole. everything was converted out of metric. all the small machine shops did it that way. it was/is just too much of a hassle to have double the sets of tools floating around for tweaking. it is also too much hassle to make sure every machine operator can use both systems. when dials just have numbers you don't want an operator to assume it's one system or the other. things can go very wrong that way. i guess also 50-some years ago when they started, not as many people knew they metric system well? either way having a plant with both systems seems like potential mess, as well as a safety hazard.
the whole thing is a massive undertaking that is just getting harder and harder to pull off every day. all that being said, i wish the USA had changed over at some point. i think it would take some sort of insane event to justify retooling a country in this day and age.

we, WKDU 91.7fm play pretty much "music not heard on other stations". we are the only free format, student run station left in Philadelphia. our programming cover punk/hardcore, indie, reggae, techno/hjouse/trace and whatever else. one thing about our programming... we do not follow the generic college block programming for styles of music. basically every 3 hours the DJ changes and most all of the time it's not the same style of music. a program guide (online or in print form) is helpful, but most people don't seem to care. they still listen most all of the time. i guess being the last Philly student run station and the only one without programming (DJ picks 100% of their own music) makes us pretty much the only broadcast option for many people.
We have been webcasting for a few years now (and hopefully will be able to in the future if those damn fees don't kill us) and have seen a pretty good online response. though we are not always on 24 hours a day, we do not shut down for holidays or summer (Drexel U runs full year... 3 months quarters). our webcast listeners are a mix of people in the local area, and around the world. i guess the bonus we have over other internet radio stations is a bigger budget than many with cool musical tastes, a lot of DJs and a record/cd collection we have been building up since 1968. i'm all for people starting their own webcasting stations, but there are some things bedroom run stations can't do as easily (live bands, DJ marathons, buy a lot of rad hardware)

the coolest thing about webcasting is the ability for a station like ours to reach everywhere. there are a lot of decent little stations out there, but unless you live in the right area (area often being small due to low power transmitters), you miss out.

corporate radio will always suck, but thanks to the internet we all have more options.
