from the apple site: Incidentally, the body is made of fire-retardant polycarbonate plastic, the same material used to manufacture bulletproof glass. So you can be sure that the eMac is strong enough for student use.
is that some sort of commentary on schools today? hrmmmmmmm.....
for my next question.... how come the higher model (combo drive) comes with a modem? seems odd to me. then again i guess.edu models are for sale to students and teachers, not just for schools. still seems funny.
i think it's $1200 for the combo drive and $999 for the CDrom drive....... the LCD imac is $1400 for CDrw or $1600 for combo drive (DVD player, CDrw). depending on what you need, or what external gear you already have... this might work out swell. personally i am waiting on a happy revision of the minitowers to upgrade, but i know people that bought a G4 tower just to get a bigger screen in the past (17" actually). this is a lot less than they paid for the machine and monitor. they are the kind of peopel that will not need the PCI slots of the case, or the room for 6 internal hard drives. anything they would add on can be done by USB or Firewire.
college campuses are great sources for things like this, though the cases are usually tagged in some permanant way. just in the last few years we got 4 or 5 Mac SE/30s that were on their way to the dumpster. they all can run System 8, and have ethernet jacks. still work great for telnet, screen savers bla bla bla. anyway, point is they were happy to give em to us and even though the cases have the university logo burned in, all the innards are fine. if nothing else it's parts. we actually also just found 2 Mac 1024s in the trash. have now powered them up yet, but basically it's the second Mac ever made (first being the 512k). the jack for keyboard and mouse uses a clip like a phone or ethernet cable.
sorry for the rambling, but my point is that many universities still have lots of old Macs sitting around. if they really are worth that much in Japan, i don't see why they don't buy them on Ebay where a Mac SE goes for very little. I'm sure the origional box and/or books add some value. i'm pretty sure i still have all my sisters unopened books from her Mac SE, and maybe even some old MS software she got as a software pack and never bothered to open. anyone need a shrinkwrapped 1988 copy of Hypercard? how about MS word for mac still sealed? i also still have my Apple ][e, but i'm keeping that. i still need something to play beachhead and castle wolfenstein on (the origional one). oh, did i ramble again? sorry... just had my first pepsi in a few days....... bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
how can you diss Jango Fett!?!?! he's got to be cooler than Boba...... he shoots laser guns like Billy the Kid...... and he uses the jet pack thing before the movie get's a reworking. whatever, fine... your loss. i'm not in line now, nor will i be till a few days (or more) after the movie opens... but i will probably see it in the first week of release. hopefully it will be nearly as good as Resident Evil, though without zombies i don'tt know how.

i don't think i would call it a big success, but it was commercially available. you can still find copies on ebay with the box and everything. it was an early attempt to mess with Unix on Mac hardware, which is very interesting. you wonder if this was some inspiration or ground work for some of the Apple spin-offs years later.
a Mac email list i am on was talking about this a few months back. chat started when some people were thinking of the *nix options for Macs that can not run OS X. from people that used it, they generally said it was not the easiest thing around to make it useful today. i guess they implied more that by today's standards you are better off with BSD or yellowdog if you are looking for a productive OS. both of those are actively used on old Macs (pre-PPC chips and everything).
but then won't tivo be losing that $13/month you pay for the ability to download schedules, subscribe to TV shows and whatever else? i don't own one, but from what i understand (my brother has one) your tivo dials in to get a schedule so it knows when to record the list of shows you program in. i underastand you can program it like a VCR anytime (like: record channel 17 at 22:00 Tuesday), but to go to a grid and pick "Buffy" you have to pay the monthly fees, right?
good question? the problem i always have with multiple passes in graphics is tiling them together. maybe my photoshop skills are just weak, but if it's for the web i am fine..... trying to do a 300dpi color image that will go to the printer is another issue though. too bad kinkos never seem to have a big flatbed scanner. that would be swell for the occasional use. then again most of the ones around here (Philly) stopped being 24 hours, so late night copier fun has declined.
the closest thing to those old handhelds i have seen are the "pen" scanners that they sell everywhere (staples even). not the same as what you speak of, and i think they really are only for text. one of my housemates has one and can scan passages of text from a book. it's wireless, and you just sync the pen to the machine. he can take it to the library or a bookstore and basically copy a passage of text, take it home and sync it to a text document or webpage.. he said the text recognition is pretty good, but i never used it. he's a windows user, and i don't think the devices are supported on other platforms, but maybe they are now......
xplay is not the only iPod on windoze solution.... though from what i understand none of them really have the integration that the device has with a Mac. i'm pretty sure it is not much more than running the hack to reveal the/mp3 directory on the iPod drive (hidden by default for lofi anti-piracy reasons (apple legal's idea?)). the device then shows up as an external drive. there is also *nix support in existance or on the way. from what i remember, same thing.... shows up like an external drive. think i read that here a while back actually?
the auto sysnc features with itunes will not work without an Apple (duh, itunes mac only). it still is a cool device with other platforms, but still more features on a mac. because of the drive formatting, i don't think it can be used as a boot drive on anything but a Mac either.
if you notice most scanners can't even do legal paper anymore. i got my first scanner, in (i think) early 1997, a SCSI Umax for about $200. it was a cconsumer model and could do legal paper. since then i have not seen very many scanners that can do leagal size, let alone something bigger. just for the extra 3 inches i keep the scsi one around. i still need it for scanning artwork for 7" covers. in short, i run an indie punk record label (more of a hobby, not a job). when i say record, i mean we still press records. we lose money all the time, and we don't have $1,000 for an oversized scanner. honestly if i get an oversized one i would want to be able to scan artwork for a 12" jacket anyway. i guess the general public spends most of their time scanning snapshots they took before they got a digital ccamera, so 8.5x11 is bigger than they often need anyway.
anyway rambling aside, if you notice those $1,000 scanners generally are much higher qulaity than the ones that come in cereal boxes and whatnot.
picking up an old oversized overstock on ebay would probably be a mess for me, i'm a mac user and still waiting for Umax to support the scanner under OS X.
first off, i will state i generally prefer subtitles to dubbing. even with something as action filled as crouching tiger hidden dragon.
that being said, Akira has SO much visually going on that you really have to see it a few times (and i am not a big fan of anime). on top of the sensory overload that way, there is stuff you just do not get with subtitles. if you get the recent release on DVD you can get that little white pill to pop up and then you hit magic button. it pauses the movie and translates all the text on the screen. does explain things a bit more when you know what the signs of the protestors say, or can read signs on the sides of the buildings. it added a whole new level to the movie we had missed only being able to read english.
then again, it will probably end up messing with somehting, somewhere. if Sci-Fi is doing it, then it will be geared for TV, right? if they really do it, it will be worth watching but i don't see traditionalists ever liking it. then again it's like with any remake, so whatever. more power to them. maybe it will introduce the genre to a few people that would never plunge in before.
... sorry, it's a Philly joke and i could not resist.
anyway, back to topic... i think the term hacker is way too loaded right now in the mainstream media. just wait till someone "proves" that there are terrorists hacking away at the very foundations of e-business in america (MS hacking? ha!). then all hackers will be blasted with some charge of treason. it wouldn't be the first time a hacker was declared "a risk to national security", but in these paranoid times it could get dangerous.
FCP is right up there with the other big applications for professional work..... FCP3 has made a lot of leaps, and FCP will only look nicer with the recent buy ups that Apple is making, plus that new 23" high resolution screen. i have a feeling they might acquire a few more companies before they slow down. i read somewhere last fall when most all computer makers were having bad financial times about Apples free cash. seems theuir pile of cash just sitting in the bank was many times that of IBM or any other computer maker. since everyone was hurting fromt he bad economic times (coupled with 9-11 fallout) it was a perfect time for Apple to pick up some technology. that was when the rumors were flying about Apple buying up SGI too.... I'm sure a lot of people will never ditch Avid, but FCP is making a lot of progress and for *most* users is totally valid for the project they are doing. with the recent push for it i can only see it getting better anyway, and competition just makes better products for the consumer in the end (till MS gets in the game).
anyway, the choice of editing applications, in many cases, is personal taste.... not unlike the ongoing war over Adobe or Quark for a layout application. though in that case i think Quark is dropping the ball on the Apple front by stalling their OS X ready version. Adobe has theirs, and it seems a lot of Quark Express diehards are taking it for a spin for that reason alone.

generally the SF and NYC ones are the "big ones" of the expos.... though saving gearo for these two expos is not always good business... like last year's NYC expo was pretty much a preview of 10.1 and some upgrades to imacs and G4 towers.... the Tokyo expo is smaller in terms of people showing up, but i think Apple likes to play in Sony's neighborhood. in the last year Apple has pledged to be less focused on releasing things only at big expos. like in 2001 they used a press event to release something... right now i cant remember if it was the new ibook (icebook, cube-book or whatever you want to call it) or the ipod....
i didnt realize the laptops still used ADB these days...... that's pretty crazy.... the only laptop i have is an old powerbook 540c (that would be a pre-powerPC chip).
ADB was short for Apple Desktop Bus. what you people might refer to as PS/2 maybe (i really dont know)? ADB died when the macs added USB and lost their serial ports and floppy drives. anyway my point being if you say a new (usb stock) Mac has an ADB keyboard, you would get some confused looks from Mac users.
anyway to the point of your problem about events..... sorry, can't help.
there are easy easy hacks to reveal that "hidden mp3 folder"..... it's Apple's lofi way to discourage mass swapping of MP3s from the ipod (apple legal called for it maybe?). in general Apple's take on the MP3 issue is that the file format should not be blamed for the illegal activities of some users..... anyway i have a few friends with ipods and they all did the hack... though since they are all mac owners, i do not know how that helps it play with linux.
if you did not yet buy one, you might want to hold on a little... the company that makes the HD is supposed to ship a 10 gig drive any day now, and a 20 gig version in about a month. we might see these in the ipod as soon as MacWorld Tokyo (this thursday). ok, that info is mostly from rumor sites, but the ipod has been out about 5 months now and these days that seems to be about how often Apple tweaks hardware. anyway my point is if you were going to buy one tomorrow, wait till thursday to see what happens.
granted 20 gigs of MP3s is an insanely high amount, but the thing also is a portable hard drive, and can be used as a boot drive for macs. kinda cool for a diagnostic tool.

it's odd they don't pull them and sell on the used market. might not be as salable now, but when only top-o-the line G4s had superdrive, a lot of resellers would pull then in favor of a CD-RW or DVD and then resell them to other users. if you custom build a G4 these days from Apple, the Superdrive is about $200 more than the next cheaper optical drive.... granted saving $200 on a $4000 rackmount device might not be too much, but it's the principle of not needing it. then again maybe with OS X DVD burning it is a valid way toa rchive data? i dunno. i'm still hoping Apple makes a rackmount device at somepoint. as a longtime Apple user (since my ][e) i think it would make the boasting about OS X's power more desirable (and affordable?) to the super users.
i have a IIIxe, and still have not felt compelled to upgrade..... i think the only time i really wished i had a color screen was when i actually tried to use the NYC subway map i have. i could use it but there are so many crossing lines that it was a pain. then again i could stuff a little map in my pocket or look at the wall.... so yeah. i realize most of what i do with my palm could be handled by a phone, but i don't see replacing my $250 (when i bought it) Palm IIIxe and $40 kyocera 2035 phone with a $500 combo device (ok, down to $400 now). besides... i just picked up a Palm III gps kit new on ebay for $40, so i have to enjoy that before i upgrade. Palm promises 802.11* and bluetooth as well as other things in their devices this year. maybe i'll be ready to bite in a few months, but right now i like my device that requires new batteries every 2 months. the again if Apple gets back into the PDA market i would be interested. since hopping to OS X i have missed the ability to hotsync (that beta they released is a mess).
i have not come across any of those CDs ont he list, but at the college radio station i work at i saw a CD this weekend that said "WILL NOT PLAY IN A COMPUTER". it is the new Einsturzende Neubauten "Strategies Against Architecture III". it's a CD totally worth buying for the incredible booklet/package, but just out of curiosity i tried it and it was 100% happy in a few Macs. i have heard somewhere that some of the "junk toc files" they use to confuse some computers dont always tricks macs. tonight if i think of it there is a Dell running windows i can get to and see what happens. interesting this article specifically mentioned Macs and PS2 and DVD players. maybe the old method only fooled windows?
it was suggested to me to run our own mail server.... thanks for the link and info......
i think we will do that.... though i still am looking into other DSL providers, verizon just made me mad pulling that. if we stick with verizon or not, i would still dig having our own box taking care of the mail.
first off i have verizon for my land lines and they are ok... i prefer them for my cell phone even. I HATE THEM FOR MY DSL! it's not the service i signed up for a little over a year ago (and yes, i figuring out who to switch to). a few months ago verizon made a move to "eliminate spam"..... the smtp servers only allow mail with a @verizon or @ bellatlantic return address. if they host your website, then you can get access to an smtp server... but for those of us with a few email addresses, unless they included an smtp server... we can not send mail from them. not too long after this they started blocking ftp access to certain places. the email blockage is explained on the website, basically their solution is to switch your hosting to verizon (um, no). as for the ftp blocking, i got a vague response from tech support about some anti-spam measures or something. what? at first we though something went haywire in our router, but we checked that out. it's odd... it's not everywhere, and it only blocks uploading. but the places it blocks are places i need to get to. it really sucks when some of the blocked places are ones that host websites i do work on. argh!
so what do people think of earthlink dsl? how about direct TV? they seem to be out only options. our cable co is *working* on bringing in cable modems, but they are so terrible about everything else that i dont think we want to be mixed up with them anyway.

it's odd they don't pull them and sell on the used market. might not be as salable now, but when only top-o-the line G4s had superdrive, a lot of resellers would pull then in favor of a CD-RW or DVD and then resell them to other users. if you custom build a G4 these days from Apple, the Superdrive is about $200 more than the next cheaper optical drive.... granted saving $200 on a $4000 rackmount device might not be too much, but it's the principle of not needing it. then again maybe with OS X DVD burning it is a valid way toa rchive data? i dunno. i'm still hoping Apple makes a rackmount device at somepoint. as a longtime Apple user (since my ][e) i think it would make the boasting about OS X's power more desirable (and affordable?) to the super users.

i thought i heard some yelling.... yikes
i have a IIIxe, and still have not felt compelled to upgrade..... i think the only time i really wished i had a color screen was when i actually tried to use the NYC subway map i have. i could use it but there are so many crossing lines that it was a pain. then again i could stuff a little map in my pocket or look at the wall.... so yeah. i realize most of what i do with my palm could be handled by a phone, but i don't see replacing my $250 (when i bought it) Palm IIIxe and $40 kyocera 2035 phone with a $500 combo device (ok, down to $400 now). besides... i just picked up a Palm III gps kit new on ebay for $40, so i have to enjoy that before i upgrade.
