  1. Re:Dee-Ann LeBlanc and technical expertise on WineX Install Goes Sour for LinuxWorld Editor · · Score: 1

Actually, your comment makes me wonder how technically savvy YOU are. I went and read the article and she sounds fairly competent to me. Throwing around terms like "pipe", knowing that FC2 f*cked up XFree86Config, and browsing message boards to find solutions to technical problems.

Trust me, my wife is someone who is *NOT* computer-savvy, and when she talks its nothing like Dee-Ann. Instead its phrases like "The thingy wouldn't do the stuff."

Incidently, I'm also fascinated that many of the comments in this story refer to sexism. I've been reading these comments and I haven't seen any that use gender as a reason for the author's problems.

But then again, I browse at +3.

  2. Re:Learning a language is not that easy on DARPA Funds Game To Teach Arabic To Army · · Score: 1

Does it really take "years" to learn a foreign language? I only lived in Germany for a year, but by the end I was able to speak enough to get around. The international students who come to the US seem to pick up English in only a few months. Granted, its not necessarily "fluent" but its enough to get by.

Besides, for US soliders (note: not intelligence, just the standard security-patrol GI) s/he only needs enough to basically communicate with the Iragi nationals s/he comes into contact with on the street. That's not a requirement for fluency, just the same amount a tourist would need.

But perhaps I should RTFA before posting....

  3. ISS Internet Scanner (better than Nessus?) on Missing Open Source Security Tools? · · Score: 1

Its probably too late for this post to get modded up enough for anyone to see it, but I've been at home sick so I didn't check Slashdot every 20 minutes like I usually do.

Based upon marketing hype, my management chain insists on using ISS's Internet Scanner (www.iss.net) to perform site-wide security scans and do vulnerability assessments. Nessus just simply isn't as feature rich as Internet Scanner. IS searches for thousands of vulnerabilities, and they are constantly adding new checks that can be dynamically loaded into the scan tool. The scans are highly customizable. The only problems are the tool can only run on a Windows server (i.e it can scan any network device including unix, printers, and Cisco), its a huge resource hog, and GUI only.

I'd love a nice, easy command-line based unix based system that has all the functionality of ISS, including the nice HTML output. The problem is, of course, that ISS has a huge head start.

Is 40K more really that much? Its not like you could come back after a year and suddenly buy a new house with cash or anything.

With running and swimming technology doesn't help much. Its all about your personal skill. But with biking people can have very distinct advantages. I bought my bike for $200 at Target. The winner at the last tri I ran had a custom-built bike that cost hime more than $5000. Money literally bought him an advantage.

They all meet up on EverCrak at about 10PM AFTER the kids have gone to bed and the sex is done and the wives are asleep. I asked my friend in amazement about this and his reply is that their group gaming time is more important than a few hours' sleep. They game from 10PM till 1AM or so then grab six hours before going to work.

I personally think its nuts to sacrifice sleep, but I guess it depends on how serious you are about your gaming.

Disclaimer: I did not RTFA but I did read a lot of the comments, and I'm hearing a lot of self-masturbatory, "I'm better than you because I don't like mainstram", blah blah crap.

Its very simple. Listen to what you want. If it makes you smile, cry, laugh, clap, then its good FOR YOU! No one else (not even a poster on Slashdot) can tell you what you are going to personally enjoy.

Is music dead? Absolutely not. I hate to say this, but this is one reason why the p2p is good (no...wait...I didn't mean that!...). I can listen to lots of EVERYTHING! If I hear about some musician, I can go check out their stuff. If its good I buy their album. If it sucks I don't listen to them any more.

So don't tell me that there are no good, innovative musicians anymore. They exist. Find them. Go to clubs. Read websites. Download mp3s. But for Bob's sake, if you find an artist you like, BUY THEIR ALBUM! Otherwise they will never make another one.
