Wow, this was supposed to be funny and instead I get a bunch of insightful. I basically stole this line from George Carlin.

Do you consider yourself above average intelligence? If you are, that means that by definition most (i.e. more than half) of the people you meet are dumber than you.
People need to be shown the alternative, that's the point.
When I met my wife, she used AOL because that's all she knew. Without someone to hold your hand, you don't know about Google, Yahoo, Iwon, and other portals.
When I showed her how DSL and a raw internet connection gave you everything that AOL does, she switched. But it took someone to teach her.
So how can we teach people? Maybe create some kind of "Non-AOL Internet for Dummies". But why? What is AOL doing that is so bad? They are trying to combat spam, popups, viruses, worms.
I predict another five years for the Internet in its present form
I agree absolutely. If I saw a glimpse today of the net in five years I probably wouldn't recognize it. It is a cosstantly evolving organism. In 1999 I wouldn't recognize the net today.
Will it die? No, of course not. Games, porn, mail, chat, music, p2p, that's not going anywhere.
Business? Will businesses need to re-address the way they do business? More security, VPNs maybe, perhaps even leaving the net for other Information Systems solutions? Perhaps. If I knew the answer I would be rich in 5 years.
What the next big thing? Who knows. I never thought in 1999 that music downloads for money could be successful.
Actually, Sears is one of coolest stores I've seen in terms of IT infrastructure.
A few months ago I was registering for my upcoming wedding. My bride and I went to Dillard's. There, we had to write out on a piece of paper the product numbers and quantities for the things we wanted.
Then we went to Sears. At Sears, we were given a scanner with a stylus and touch screen and wireless net connection. We could simply barcode scan the items we wanted. There was an internet kiosk in the store, and our registry on the web was updated in real time as I walked around scanning things. That's pretty darn cool...
What I don't like is the fact that there is this huge genre blanket called "Anime". Watch DragonballZ, then Grave of the Fireflies, then Evangelion, then some hardcore hentai. These films are all *completely* different, yet they are all considered "anime". Its like creating a single genre called "English-speaking live-action film". And different genres appeal to different people.
I wish that anime would simply be completely accepted as a film medium, in which case each movie can be placed in the appropriate category instead of lumping it all together. When I tell people I'm an anime fan they all go "Oh, that Pokemon stuff..." and I want to scream and go "Not that crap, I watch *good* movies like Ghost in the Shell".
Nostalgia aside, I love playing the older "classics" but the problem I have is with the controller. My PS2 controller just doesn't work the same for games designed to be played with joysticks.
I realize this is a joke, but I was listening to a commentary on the radio the other day and I realized how relevant this is.
Take any group of guy friends (or gals, for that matter). They enjoying spending time together. "Bonding", if you will. So what do they do? Go fishing? Bowling? Drink beer and watch Monday Night Football? Or get together and play a table-top RPG?
Yes, despite ironic jokes to the contrary, this is REAL LIFE. Real life is spending time with your friends in person, having conversations, participating in activities you enjoy together.
How come a poker club is "socially acceptable" as having a life, but D+D is not? In both cases you are sitting at a table for hours, drinking beer and talking to each other.
Its all about social stereotypes. But as the demographics of the population changes (I'm only speaking for the US...I don't have too much experience in other countries) I think that ideas about these things will change. Are videogames still "geeky" pasttimes? A lot of us who started the video game craze are now in our 30s with disposable income. And as my kids grow up I won't harbor any negative feelings against them for wanting to play a lot of videogames. The same is true for D+D.
OK, so let's say I invent a new lawnmower so I can cut the grass in half the time. Does that mean I now spend that half drinking beer? Maybe, but it also means I can spend that other half pruning bushes or something, and overall I can get *more* work done. That's not a symptom of laziness, its a desire to get more things accomplished.
As a sysadmin, do you write that perl script cause you're lazy? No, you write it so that repetetive task can get done quickly while you work on other things.
Just out of curiosity, your sig mentions plans to delay US elections. Do you have a reference to this? Is this legislation on the Congressional floor somewhere? I'm truly curious, because if true its frightening...
I love Slashdot. Its the same as every other gaming forum out there. X sucks. Y rocks. Z outsells X and Y, although I have no reference to back that up.
Face it, if you're reading this forum you're probably (but maybe not) a fairly serious gamer. So if you are truly into your gaming, what does that really mean?
You are going to buy whatever console, whatever system, whatever game is what you want to play.
Some people play for gameplay. Others for graphics. Others for storyline, human interaction (i.e. MMORPG), whatever. Me, I play for a combination of storyline and graphics. (In other words, I'm a FF fan).
Why must people insist that some particular hardware will fail and others will succeed? Before the DreamCast came out, who thought it would fail? How can anyone really know what system is "better"?
Here are some games that I think are really awesome: Zelda, Full Spectrum Warrior, Disgaea. Well, they are all on different systems! So how can I say which system is better?
Interesting, I guess I'm lucky. I bought a PS2 on launch date. It is my DVD player. I'm currently playing Front Mission 4 on the same, original, launch date PS2.
Of course, I also take care of my PS2. It doesn't sit on the carpet, I clean and dust it, etc etc etc.

I've always had to show my Voter Registration Card and a picture ID.
P.S. I live in Florida. Does it vary from State to State?

Actually, the line is:
Oh shit, there goes the planet. *slowly shakes head*
Well, not *all* of Evangelion (although I'm sure you've done it...we all have one crazy weekend).
And be selective in your hentai. Hell, even *hentai* has subgenres. Rei Rei, Ogenki Clinic, and Cool Devices are all very different.
OK, I didn't read the FA, but I like your post.

Hehe...actually, a sequel series was make that WAS a wholly forgettable animated series.

So, um, where is the Yahoo email notifier? I can't find it on SourceForge?
Thanks.
That is a great analogy. I'll have to remember that one.
Don't confuse "laziness" with "efficiency".

Its more than a distinct possiblity.
Take a look at the "Universal National Service Act of 2003"
Senate #89
House #163
www.congress.gov, search on the title.
There is a bill on the floor to re-enact conscription in the United States.
Is what you did illegal? If you own the game, is it illegal to obtain the media that way?
This is the lowest slashdot ID I've ever seen actually posting in public.
That's a good point. What are the specs to run at 30fps, 800x600, many of the fancy effects turned off?
I mean, come one, everyone on Slashdot always says "Its the gameplay, not the graphics". Right?
I love Slashdot. Its the same as every other gaming forum out there. X sucks. Y rocks. Z outsells X and Y, although I have no reference to back that up.

I wish I had mod points, just for your against the wall comment.

Cause it kinda sounds like they're high school camps. Perhaps they are trying to avoid any potential problems....
