  1. OLD TECHNOLOGY! on GM Claims Advanced Cruise Control By 2008 · · Score: 1

I remember watching a show when I was younger at LEAST 10 years (probably 13) ago called 'Beyond 2000'. It was on the Discovery Channel before it was the "choppers and housewife" channel.

One episode of 'Beyond 2000' had some German engineers driving VW vans on the Autobahn 100% automated! These things were changing lanes, passing other cars, accelerating, stopping, etc with NO HUMAN CONTROL. In fact, the engineers were not even sitting in the drivers seat; they felt confident enough in their engineering that the computer had their lives in its hands.

Can anyone here dredge this up and post a link? Does anyone else remember seeing this episode?

I don't understand why this is news. Nothing new to see here... really.

DirectNIC.com, a registrar and host which is based in New Orleans, evacuated the majority of their personnel. The skeleton staff that remained spent a great deal of effort battling broken windows, incoming water, and flying debris, from their high-rise office and data center. Their hosting and registration services remained online and worked flawlessly however they are currently running on a back-up diesel generator. From their website "Please understand that with the aforementioned power outage, and the fact that travelling to and from our offices (on the 11th floor) is somewhat restricted, responses
to customer support issues might take a little longer than normal to be addressed

    1) Can anyone even contact these agencies around this area? Assuming they actually have com, wouldn't they be swamped with traffic?

    2) Showing up on their door step and ready to help submitting themselves to authorities that would best know how to allocate their resources would be a good idea? It is obvious they need help, why wait?

I am not suggesting everyone go in there half-cocked but if you notice I said "well-prepared, self-sufficient" hams should make themselves useful. That does NOT include every single individual that has passed their ham exam.

I am also not suggesting that these people are absent of leadership structure and organization. ARES/FEMA/RC/NG/etc would obviously be in charge and coordinate positioning and allocation of radio communication resources.

According to the news outlets all communications infrastructure is non-functional in most of that part of the state. There are even reports that they have not heard ANYTHING from several of the most southern parishes (counties). So unless you have a satellite transceiver, or a ham radio, there is no information flow in and out. I am not talking about "health and welfare" information either; I am talking about emergency communications for search and rescue missions, location of those stranded, and critical life-saving information which is crucial for the preservation of life.

Personally I am an Eagle Scout, have 2 meritorious life saving awards, I am CPR certified by the Red Cross, and of course I am a ham. I also have extensive experience in boating and maritime activities.

If I had the time/resources I would head down there myself and be the first to assist with communications however possible. Since I am physically unable to go, I urge everyone who is able, willing, and prepared to do so make an effort to help out.

  4. HAMS: Help Needed! on Communications Infrastructure No Match for Katrina · · Score: 2, Informative

    ATTN HAM RADIO OPERATORS:
After watching all of the major news outlets they are all mentioning that communications in and out of the city of New Orleans is practically nullified.

Tens of thousands (if not a hundred thousand) or more are trapped in the city following hurricane Katrina. This problem is worsened by the fact that after this cyclone, the city is flooded and the waters are RISING, not receding! This is an urgent situation and needs immediate attention!

Because of the need of hundreds of search and rescue missions, and the lack of ability of communications infrastructure to operate, assuming it is still existent at all, I would call FOR EVERY AVAILABLE HAM RADIO OPERATOR TO ATTEMPT TO GIVE THEIR ASSISTANCE TO THIS AREA!

Well-prepared self-sufficient mobile ham radio operators would make a difference in saving lives and passing 'life and limb' traffic in and out of the disaster area. I would like to propose hams descend on the city and surrounding areas to provide a temporary communications infrastructure until such time that officials are able to provide this on their own.

Also no where in the Bible does it condem slavery. In fact it even reads that slaves should obey their master and that masters should treat their slaves justly and fairly. It is just another economic system.

Personally I disagree with the idea of slavery, and would never participate in that sort of activity. However I cannot corrolate my dislike of slavery to my faith as there is no real corrolation to be had.

I am an audio engineer who does sound at many many rock concerts. The best way to talk to someone next to you with high sound pressure levels (SPL) is to get about 1 to 2 inches away, have them put their finger in their ears, and speak in a very low voice.

This reduces the high frequencies going into their ear canal which allows them to focus on the lower ones thus increasing your intelligibility level.

This keeps you from having to yell, and also keeps them from having to hear you yell thus raising the localized SPL which is inherently bad for your ears.

Geeze... my intro humanities class at my community college in Orlando was able to provide a better understanding of this than you!

Essentially the KJV version is probably considered the LEAST accurate of any version for 2 reasons:
    1) It was translated from Latin to Old English (not from the original texts).

    2) It was created for largely political reasons. The king and the pope didn't get along very well.

Some of the most accurate translations are the NIV, and the NRSV. Why? Because we know a lot more about linguistics and translation of ancient texts now in our modern 21st century rational, logical, and objective thought process than the monks and priests did back in the 12th century! We also took it directly from the source, not from the Latin texts.

Also if you ever do take a Hebrew/Roman/Middle Ages humanities course you will learn a lot about this subject. Another thing to keep in mind is that with modern translations there is signifigant peer review which did not exist as much in earilier times. Today if something signifigant was changed in a translation that was largely accepted as innacurate or biased, Biblical scholars, churches, and historians would scream bloody murder. This prevents major alterations to the modern text without peer review and general acceptance.

Actually in my position I don't do anything unethical or somehow morally negative to anyone, my fellow employees or my customers (I am not management).

If I was told to do anything unethical or anything that violated my core beliefs I wouldn't be working there. I do my best to help the customers (except those that are jackasses) and I have developed a relationship with many of them.

They have an evolving business model which is trying to increse frequency of visits and ultimately increase sell-thru which will increase profits. This does tend to piss people off when they try for 4 weeks to get a specific title but we dont have any in stock that far out from the release date.

I would say that if anyone is acting unethical it is upper management/marketing. Best Buy will pull the same sort of thing - run a killer deal on a piece of gear but only have like 2 units per store and then try to upsell the customers once the yget in the door. It is all about foot traffic and market share and some of these retailers are brutal in this regard.

However your ramblings are that of a typical uninformed, uneducated, emotional liberal who has next to no understanding of market forces and economics. Here is something to remember: the market ALWAYS attempts to equalize!

For example: many companies are outsourcing white-collar jobs to India. They are laying off hundreds of thousands while paying a wage a fraction of what they would in America to the Indians. Well... in the long term they are going to realize that the buying power of the average American is going to decrease due to the unemployment and thus less and less people will be able to purchase their products. This means the biz could go out of biz and wouldn't be selling anything to anyone; thus the market has equalized itself.

One reason for the trend of moving jobs overseas is government bloat, excessive regulation, and extreme taxation which all result in a higher cost of doing business. So the root of the problem is big government. Here is another thing to remember: big biz likes big gov!

Working for a corporation is miserable and I personally don't know why ANYONE would do it (other than for temp positions such as college, income supplement etc). Being in business for yourself is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. The problem with small biz is of course again excessive gov regulation which really makes it hard to survive.

Anyway, if you want a more educated view of things I would suggest you read some of these papers:
