    Crypto-Gram isn't the only mailing list that gets hit by misunderstandings - all automatic mail handling is always confused about automailers and mailing lists. And even due to usability factors, it makes sense to sort mailing lists to folders anyway, and use a client that supports multiple specific folders.

    I don't think the Mozilla crowd have any idea how socially inappropriate it is to be seen using a browser with the flame-throwing dinosaur in the introscreen.

    Seriously, though, Mozilla as a Netscape mascot has quite a long history, and as everyone knows, the character was quite visible during the time when Netscape became the dominant browser. If Mozilla character furthered the growth of the company in mid-90s, I see no reason why it wouldn't work today.

    Well, just about the first question about Ultima IX when it was in development was "...but can you bake bread in it?"

    (For those who don't know, U7 engine had the flexibility to allow the characters to bake bread, even when there's only two ovens in the realm...)

    Also, the code for accessing these cd-key query servers would be open source. What would stop someone from easily writing a program to generate and check CD-Keys?

    This would need some kind of zero-knowledge protocol: The user needs to tell the key but won't actually tell it, and the server needs to authenticate the key but can't say how. It is doable, at least in theory - don't ask me, I'm not a cryptologist and don't play one even in the Internet. I just know that it can be done without compromising the system...

    What exactly does it take to 'have' IPv6? What stuff neds to be upgraded? Application software? OS? Router? Does your ISP need to 'have' or 'support' it?

    OS and applications. Many operating systems already do support IPv6, as do many applications (Mozilla does, at least, as does many IRC clients because there's distinct benefits.)

    Router/ISP level support is Nice To Have, but there are tunneling servers that enable IPv4 sites to talk IPv6.

    As far as setup woes go, my setup was as easy as 'apt-get install freenet6' =)

    But that would offend all aliens, dragons and robots!

    I know a few dragons (or at least people who play one on the Internet) and they're all very nice, except when they're annoyed by crap like this.

    ...and Dragon Strike. Too bad Westwood is now down - I wish someone will make a remake of Dragon Strike. (We can't leave the dragon flight sims entirely to hands of Sega, now can we?)

    Yeah, Aqsis is there, though they say it's slow and stuff. There's also 3Delight free beta out there.

    Okay, so there are Renderman renderers. Wish there were also good modellers - I know there are some semi-decent modellers, but, for example, Ayam is pretty hard to grasp for someone who is not familiar with Renderman on file format level. I really wish Blender folks can come up with a cool Renderman integration some day, as of yet the scripts are quite incomplete.

    (For what it's worth, if you want to see how far someone with little clue about 3D and no clue about Renderman can get with Blender, see my renderings =)

    ASP.NET makes it easier on developers as well. Traditional ASP, otherwise known as "Spagetti code" was all intermixed with HTML. Now you can write your scripts in a separate file and have your controls reference the code.

    Ah, kinda like PHP (codemess-inna-HTML) vs. HTML::Mason (componentized Perl code embeddable to HTML)?

    Good that Microsoft is learning the One True Web App Development Method, too =)

    No, you're not the only one! I use XMMS, but it's minimized and controlled with the buttons on the multimedia keyboard, or LIRC remote controller. No need for fancy UIs for me!

    And why do every media player have skin support? I tried to find a working media player without any lame skins and failed...

    ...well, there was VideoLanClient but even that doesn't work perfectly...

    Now, you can't even buy comics at the convenience store any more- at least not many of them. They're marshaled away in specialized comic book stores, where collectors go to peruse.

    I cracked out a copy of good old Space Quest II about a year ago and loaded it up on my Athlon.

    I hoped that would also apply to Sierra subsidiaries. Yesterday I had trouble getting Betrayal at Krondor (Dynamix, 1993) to run in Win98SE - not enough memory, and apparently the only way to get sound AND USB mouse support is to use Win dos box, raw dos boot won't do.

    Usually I wouldn't mind, but that was the first full-price PC game I ever got, and besides, it has retained its value most extraordinarily! =)

    Amazingly enough, the game runs just fine (just a little bit sluggishly and I didn't try the sound yet) in Bochs with DR-DOS 7.

    Not with the "standard" UNIX permissions - unless you create a new group (as said before). I'm not sure if ACLs are formally POSIXized yet, but some systems do support them (like IRIX and Linux with XFS file system, and also probably some commercial UNIXes...)

    Sodipodi has consistently not impressed me. It has great potential and the implementor folks are sure making it better, but it doesn't work yet, especially in regards to SVG. Which is, of course, completely confusing.

    If I make a nice-looking SVG file in it (if it somehow actually works), Nautilus shows it wrong. If I make a nice-looking SVG file in Sketch, and open it in Sodipodi, Sodipodi shows it wrong. Or crashes.

    It's sad that Sketch is still the best vector graphics program for Linux - it's not bad, and it sort of works, but the UI isn't the best possible... =/ I really hope this library thing will make things better!

    Almost all English language movies I have on DVD have English subtitles. Granted, most of them are way better in quality than this stuff...

    Personally, this was one of the reasons why I even got a DVD player. If there's one thing I've learned from movies is that Americans speak almost undecipherable gibberish, especially if they're angry, and the translation isn't any good if you want to quote from the movie =) Of course, I later noted this isn't as bad because DVDs also have far better sound than VHS and I can more often make sense what they say.

    Or how a 16:9 widescreen-format movie can require subtitles in the body of the movie instead of BELOW it?

    As others have pointed out, the screenshots were from a XviD version, and those have textual subs that get shown how the hell the player software pleases...

    I respect Miguel and his efforts; it is a shame that he and his talented followers insist upon cloning dubious Microsoft products. ... We make fun of Microsoft's use of the word "innovation" -- but where is innovation in the Open Source / free software community?

    So Mono isn't "innovative" but a rip-off. Well, if you're looking for Innovation, I'd suggest you to look at Parrot and Perl 6 development. The Parrot virtual machine sounds cooler than JVM and CLR, and Perl 6 sure sounds like an interesting language compared to Perl 5.

    But nobody looks Perl6 because they think it's Not Sexy (Perl has "looks like line noise" reputation, while Java and C# are Supposedly Nice-Looking, Like C++ But Without All The Extra Garbage). Grrmrr... =(

    Seriously, a three button mouse ought to be enough for everyone(TM). Who needs a scroll wheen when you have the arrow keys on the keyboard?

    For someone who spends most of the day in front of web browser windows (yes, multiple 640x580 windows, none of this fullscreen rubbish for my hurting eyes!) mostly scrolling the text, the mouse wheel makes Life Worth Living. =)

    Really. I didn't value mouse wheel much myself at first, but then, I realized that arrow keys are so stone age.

    Bad graphics, boring gameplay, no sense of humor. Which is too bad because Warcraft II *is* the greatest game I've ever played.

    Yeah, WarII is far more enjoyable that WarIII what comes to the content...

    Speaking of humor, yeah, WarIII is far drier in this respect. The clicky-clicky sounds are still funny in many cases (The demon hunter "Darkness called..." line ruled...) but I couldn't help but notice that many things I expected were not there - Grom Hellscream didn't scream like hell, human footmen didn't sound like WarII (or has Bill Roper's voice changed that much over the years? I don't think so =) ... this kind of tradition violations alone are worth boooooos. =)

    But some music pieces are amazing (human and night elf music in particular). Which isn't much to say though, since War2 soundtrack was solid steel all way through...

    the one put out for WarCraft II where you went to the Orc homeworld.

    I actually remember that one more for the new heroes. Alleria was probably the first female game character I personally remember seeing, and the orc heroes were cool, because the characters really sounded like the names. (My first disappointment with WC3 was because Grom Hellscream didn't scream like hell, as in WC2ex - what, did he catch cold or something?...)

    If Starcraft is the RTS equivelant of Olympic fencing, then Warcraft III is a bunch of grade schoolers playing at WWF.

    Oh yeah? In that case, Myth series is the equivalent of longsword duel to first blood on 5 m diameter arena on top of the crater of an active volcano.

    (The insult warfare has begun. Hopefully it doesn't continue, though. )

    That might be a valid point if a.) WC3 costs $60 (it doesn't, it's $50 just like every other game out there)

    Uh, in Finland, the game originally sold for 60 euros. Though, I got the game at post-Christmas price of 35 euros... In the summer I had money for one game, and WarIII seemed way too expensive. I got NWN because that was a game that I had actually been waiting for =)

    and b.) If Warcraft 3 was another run-of-the-mill game.

    Of course Warcraft III isn't yet another run-of-the-mill game. It's a polished, beautiful, somewhat innovative, enjoyable and popular run-of-the-mill game. =)

    Upkeep was only a partial solution. Some other games - such as the Total War games and Myth series - do something far more elegant: The resource gathering and building is either in a completely different part of the game (as in Shogun: Total War) or completely tossed aside (Myth).

    And I think this kind of games are far more interesting; I want to focus on battle strategy instead of economy management.

    I mean, if *real* generals want 100 footmen, they don't go around building barracks and farms - they call the HQ and say something that could be summarized as "could you please get me an infantry company? Even a few squads could do for starters?" =)

    I curse the day when the local game reviewer said "Warcraft: Orcs & Humans has some missions where you don't get any reinforcements, but these are boring, please drop them." Rubbish...

    I'm not saying WarIII is a bad game, though - far more interesting than some worse games.

    I found it interesting that some outfit called 'Swords and Sorcery Studios' has partnered with Blizzard to put out the Dungeons & Dragons WarCraft RPG too.

    Well, WotC already did stuff about Diablo II, so it wouldn't surprise me to see this...

    Of course, the company that does the coolest computer-game-to-RPG-supplement conversions is Steve Jackson Games - There's a GURPS supplement for Myth / Myth II, and I heard they're also making a Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri supplement. Not to even mention all of the weird and original supplements for GURPS...

    Too bad the GURPS game system pretty damn heavy to row compared to d20System / DnD3e or, the game we're playing right now, Classic D&D. =)

    The WCIII-AoM match would end with Myth veterans showing up and killing everyone else (with only a couple of well-placed wights...), since they don't need to worry about freakin' economy side, they just fight. =)

    My subtitling guide describes how I (used to) subtitle in linux and my timing guide describes how I do wav timing.

    Thanks for the tips! That didn't look that hard, actually, but not as easy as SSA. (Then again, the version of SSA I have here has one annoying limitation - only able to operate on 8 bit wavs. Then again, Finnish speech is legible even at 8 bits =) The idea to use RDBMS for script storage is pretty neat, too. I just hatched an evil plan for a standalone GTK+ app that would do the same without direct SQL hackery or a web interface.

    Probably not important for finnish TV, since pulldown is an NTSC-only abomination.

    Abomination, well, you got that right. I've read a few papers about it and I still don't get it (something about removing and duplicating frames when someone sneezes towards the television or something), but fortunately I don't need to, because PAL is our pal. =)
