  4. Zoom In on Is Cheap Video Surveillance Possible? · · Score: 1

Use relatively cheap cameras with good narrow-field lenses and aim them at points of entry and expensive objects (like your car). It makes no sense to use a wide-angle camera to cover your whole property in lo-res when a thief has to gain entry to your property through a door or window, and has to open your car door to steal your car or its CD player. Focus tight and you'll get better identification when a crime does happen.

The time is not far away when hospitals will routinely take a DNA sample from every newborn to test for genetic defects, and to file away as part of its lifelong medical records. Doctors will also routinely map a patient's DNA to test for genetic defects and predisposition to a myriad of conditions and diseases; to not do so will be considered malpractice.

These records will be made available to the government under whatever law prevails at that time. Under current law, the FBI only has to declare someone a 'person of interest' in the name of national security and the records must be handed over without a warrant. If that's okay with you, then do nothing. If it's not, then elect legislators and a president who will restore our basic freedoms.

  16. Several Counter-Arguments on Ethanol Demand Is Boosting Food Prices Worldwide · · Score: 1

I feel compelled to comment on a few of the misinformed opinions being posted here:

    (1) "Ethanol from corn takes more energy to produce than the fuel provides." Even if this were true, so what? The whole idea is that you have to produce a portable form of energy storage. That takes energy, whether you are paying for drilling, transporting, and refining gasoline, or distilling ethanol from corn mash. Even charging batteries takes much more energy than is actually stored. Most electricity in the US comes from burning coal. So how green are batteries? How efficient? Not very. Besides, the truth is that for every 100 BTUs of energy used to make ethanol, 167 BTUs of ethanol is produced, which is actually a net GAIN. I'm not trying to defend ethanol production from corn, even though I live in Iowa. Ethanol from corn stalks is a better idea, IMHO. But whatever we do, we have to make sure we're talking about facts, not beliefs.

    (2) "If farmers can't make money, they should just sell their land." Do you know how much you'd be paying for food if this actually happened? Besides, in Iowa and other agricultural states, farmland is zoned only for farming, in order to make sure the means of production aren't paved over for future generations. So the only person who's going to buy a farm is one who is willing to farm it. And, as someone else above pointed out, that isn't a profitable business unless you inherit your land and it's paid for. Vicious circle.

    (3) "High-fructose corn syrup is bad." I don't like the stuff myself, but without this market corn prices would be even lower than they are, which would drive more farmers out of business or require increased subsidies. And judging from the thousands of tanker cars I see the railroad moving both east and west from here, I'm guessing most of you have a taste for it.

Agriculture is a business, and it's driven by the laws of economics. Balancing food prices, agricultural profits, and fuel production dos not have a simple black/white solution. It's complex, and is intertwingled with many, many other aspects of business, politics, and society. We need good science and solid leadership to determine the best balance for all.

  19. So Let's Not Listen To Commercial Music on RIAA Seeks Royalties From Radio · · Score: 4, Insightful

Commercial music was once one of the great joys of my life. I loved mainstream rock'n'roll, high-profile jazz artists, famous classical artists; in fact, I loved just about everything except country. I spent a lot of money on vinyl, then tape, then CDs, often re-buying the same music when a new format came along. You wouldn't believe how much I've spent over the years.

I loved Napster and Kazaa when they came along because they allowed me to sample a lot of music I wouldn't have heard otherwise. When I found something I liked, I'd go out and buy a CD. You know, to 'support the band'. Only it turns out the bands didn't get much (if any) of the money, anyway; it went to the record companies and stopped there. Didn't matter, because the RIAA shut the download sites down. No more music sampling for me.

Then the RIAA went on a rampage and started dragging grannies and gradeschoolers into court. That's when I stopped buying music. I just quit completely. I haven't bought a new CD in over four years.

I began listening to Internet-streamed radio and loved it. Then the RIAA began trying to shut that down. Now they're going after commercial radio.

Well, screw them. I'm done. No more commercial, big-record-company music for me. The RIAA can kiss my shiny metal ass.

In the process of listening to streaming music, I've discovered some great independent music. I don't need the craptactular garbage the record companies dish out anymore. Especially not if they're going to try to fine me or send me to jail if I don't listen to it on their terms.

Screw them. I hope they all starve, and their children, too.

  24. Great for reading documentation on Using Two Monitors Makes You More Productive? · · Score: 1

I'm a Technical Writer, and my major objection to delivering documentation electronically is that users constantly have to switch between windows to read it as they work. Screen real estate is just too limited to keep both open and get anything done. With a second monitor, you can display help files on one and do your work on the other. To me, it's as good or better than working with an open manual, and has at least three advantages. First, you don't kill trees. Second, it's easy to ensure that you always have the latest version of the documentation at hand. Third, your eyes don't have to adjust from looking at a screen to looking at paper, to looking back at the screen, etc.

On a personal note, when writing documentation I'm often working with a bunch of different source documents. To be able to keep one or two of these open on one screen while I write on the other would be a godsend. Maybe I'll ask for another monitor myself.
