  12. hl2 vs doom 3 - from a story perspective. on Half Life 2 To Appear At E3 · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm not sure if the folks at ID software working on doom 3 are going to be able to beat the folks at valve in terms of immersive storytelling and player interaction.

Let's face it, quake I and II weren't all that immersive, quake III wasn't even in the category.

Half Life was so revolutionary because it brought the story telling/involvement aspect to into a stale shoot-em-up line up.

Now with half life 2 and doom 3 possibly coming out around the same time, I think it's going to be interesting to see if ID can make a game as immersive as half life and also to see if valve can exceed half life and make half-life 2 even better.

I think you're definately right when it comes to a lack of investigative reporting. I think these days it boils down to most media outlets being too afraid to do the kind of potentially damaging investigative reporting that we have seen in the past. The media industry depends too much on interest groups, and keeping businesses happy so that they will pay for advertising.

If there is one last bastion of hope for investigative reporting it's in local media. I know in San Diego and San Francisco they have segments like the "troubleshooter" etc. that act as miniature consumer watchdogs. You're right about the big network news though, it will soon be dead.

The questions they asked were more or less market research questions and I found it difficult to see the relevance that those questions might have in determining a persons ability to test a product.

I could be wrong, but I suspect they use these signups as a way to whore people into providing marketing information such as demographics etc.

I speculate the actual hardware test itself is a front for this.
