Let's see if the PSX follows console pricing or electronic gadget pricing. I.e. Game consoles intro at whatever the manufacturer feels like then drop to $199, -> $150, -> then $99 for it's last 2 years of viability. After that it drops into the bargain bins.

Dell keeps reminding us that they are in the business of supplying whatever people ask for at whatever price makes them profitable. They do not develop new ideas (much) or pick winners before the game has been played out. They sell +RW drives because this makes financial sence.
They do more than 2X the volume of any other PC vendor (Desktop and portables). There choice caries coresponding weight.
PS: pricewatch.com lists only DVD+RW drives on the 1st page of the DVD recorder category. Visit that site and figure out it's structure then come back.
You see we have PC parts vendors who simply sell the cheapest items. They only stock +RW+R drives and multyformat drives. No -RW-R. Same for the blancs.
This means that at the wholsalers in Taiwan the +RW+R drives must be cheaper already. Once that is established and sustained it's a done deal. Remember it's not like when you had PC vendors owning the technology and forcing it to market. That era ended days before the 2.88 MB flopy came out.
It works like this. I get 3 people to put in $10 each on condition that they will receive $20 in 1 week. We then have 7 days to get 9 new people in, to provide the funding for that payout plus some profit. The next week it's 27 recruits required.
It works because the stupid people will see the exponential growth and actually believe it's sustainable and treat it like an investment. The slightly smarter people treat it as gambling and try to cash out as close as possible to the collapse of the fantasy.

This is not such a limiting factor. 512 Megs of RAM is far more than I need for the kind of work I would want to do on an ultralight with a mear 12" screan. I.e. That's not where I play games or edit graphics or rip DVDs. A desktop is used for that. Or a true desktop replacment like the 9 lb Dell Inspiron 8200 I am typing this on.
Playing videos, Listening to MP3s, Running a Web browser and most importantly; Terminal emulation software dosn't need 512 MB.
That last one is the single most important reason for an ultracompact. Sometimes I have to stand infrunt of a rack hooked to a network device via a Serial cable with my laptop on one palm while I type with the other hand. 9 lb starts to feal like 90 after a few minutes. 2.8 lb would take much longer to get there.

They still manage to save the kinds of money I mentioned.
The lifestyle of this uneducated immigrant starts out at less than most Slashdoters can tolerate. Being able to cook each day instead of eating out, having a taste for "5th quarter" (Ox Tail, Turkey Neck) helps to reduce cost. Important things like education are spending priority. They buy second hand repossessed cars as the financial situation improves.
They live in places like Brucklin and then buy houses in Long Island that are nearly condemned and spend a year fixing it up without professional help then sell it for 2X to 3X the purchase price. a rented Manhattan Apartment is only used if it comes with the job.
Of course there are those that just become American bums and start collecting welfare as soon as they qualify or get into crime. Lucky for you they are a minority. The IRS says Jamaican Americans are on average wealthier (I.e. Paying more taxes) than Most other ethnic groups.

A 5'10" male is mearly above average. a 5'10" female is a towering giant.
If you go by the numbers in the population then a 5'10" female would be equivalent to a 6'4" or 6'5" male.
