My company recently purchased an SSL cert from verisign and recently received an email from http://www.qualys.com (in conj. with our purchase) to perform a web based security scan of internet facing machines, such as web servers. The results and demo reports appeared a bit better than our usual Nesus vulneravility scan, however, Qualsys is not free. Try these tools out, for web servers, they have done quite well for my end.

  7. Enterprise level hosting on Interview Apache's Ken Coar On IRC · · Score: 2, Interesting

I often wonder how apache will come to play in the future of enterprise level hosting. At my company we currently offer a multi-tiered solution where apache sits in front as more of a security/proxy device and handles all SSL communication. On another tier, weblogic, even though it contains its own http services is accessed via the weblogic proxy module in apache. (Same goes for our websphere offering). While there are many benefits to this setup, I often wonder how long a web server such as apache will be needed in this common type of setup. It's forseeable that clients in future time may just connect directly to the application server which sits behind some other type of security device, such as a firewall. What are your thoughts?

While I don't have CT, I did suffer from this annoying wrist and forearm pain from time to time. I've found that a regular workout program that includes forearm curls and streching/flexing have cut down my pain to just about none.

Try the wrist curls sometime... Chicks dig my Popeye forearms now.

  12. The user, experience and self-infection on How Well are Your Servers Handling MyDoom? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Reminds me of that dell commercial where users had to go through computer boot camp.

I notice a steady flow of anti-microsoft commentary when an outbreak such as this occurs. Remember... it was the user (is luser appropriate here?), and not microsoft that "stuck the needle in their arms."

During times like this - I think back to the amount of times I've ever gotten infected by a virus... none, I've never used AV software and probably never will - I just don't have a need, just like many other slashdotters.

Why is this you ask? Easy, because we know better. All of the hours spent in front of our boxes have allowed us to developed a trained eye... quick to point out a bullshit email subject or attachment.

The common user does not know any better and keeps infecteing themself with the virus of the month. AV software isn't always of help because viruses are created faster than the AV companies can update their definitions.

The solution lies in user training. How can mass user training be accomplished? I think OS's after being installed or used for the first time should offer (or mandate) a presentation on secure computer usage.. what to look out for, and things not to do when on the computer, such as give out credit card info or fall for Nigerian scams.
