  1. VH1. on Star Wars TV Commercials · · Score: 1

I thought I would also mention that VH1 is also showing behind-the-scenes stuff from the movie @ 6. Looks interesting, even know VH1 isn't exactly the hipest channel out there. :)

  2. Tad bit expensive.. on Free Red Hat 6.0 CDs · · Score: 2

They get you with the 0.00 deal. Seeing 0.00 as a price gets you excited and you feel that you must have it, because it's free. But $8.79 for a single cd seems a bit steep, compared to LinuxCentral or Cheapbytes, where I believe you get 2+ and it's cheaper. Nice deal, but not quite there yet. Say 5 bucks or so for shipping, and then we'll talk. :)

  4. School gaming clubs. on The Price of Being Different · · Score: 1

"Instead of banning Doom and Quake, schools should be forming Doom and Quake clubs, presided over by teachers who actually know something about the online world.."

This is a great idea, and I would love to see it implimented, but it will never happen at my school. Our budget is so tight, there are fights sometimes in the adminstration just to buy new tape. If these clubs did exist though, count me in.

P.S. Rob, maybe a "Reply" button on the page where there are no comments, like this Jon Katz article? :)

I would have to agree(for the first time) with an anonymous coward on the issue of putting PC's on the floor or hidden out of the way. My computer could be pink and brown, and not many people would notice. Now if I had one of those clear cases, I might heft it up to the desk next to me, and fear it's loud noises'.

Rob and others, why don't you just patch the source? The last full kernel source I downloaded was like 2.2.1 I think. Since then, I have been downloading the patches, and after a while, I tarball and gzip the full source all up and I have an exact copy as the 13+ meg file. Try it. :)

Last Wednesday, there was an anthrax scare at the neighboring town's school, and also a exacuation of our school when there was a bomb threat on that day also. 8. OSS for local kid. on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

A kid in my school, a middle-class white male at that, is one who dons a Trenchcoat sometimes and wears black most of the time. On Wednesday, he came into school, after the Littleton incident was all over the media, wearing a black trenchcoat and acted like he was shooting people. Well, this kid got out of school suspension for a day or so. It shows how tight some people are on this issue, espically those involved with school. The next day, the whole was evacuated because of a bomb-threat, the first one in the history of the school. Aftershocks of the killing spree?

  9. It was ok.. on EDtv · · Score: 1

I don't think it was a horriable movie, but it could have been a bit better. My favorite part was when the video store clerk tells everyone to act normal, and then when Ed walks in, he goes "Welcome to work, Ed". I also keep thinking of the Truman show during the movie, espically at times when I felt that it was directly like the Truman show. If someone wanted my opinion on if they should go see it or not, I would recommand yes, if and only if they really think it's good, and don't want to see other lesser-quality flicks.

I think Jon is right when he talks about ignore buttons. In my preferences, I have my threshold set at 1, so I don't have to deal with all those really absent-minded people who post garbage. Sure, some of them post thoughtful comments, which are then upgraded to a Score of 1. Slashdot allows you to only ignore some and not all of users feedback, which is good, and helpful.

Not all hackers are anti-social. Many use a tactic called "social engineering" to get information out of people by either phone or in person. Some hackers are actually very social, working at jobs that require social interaction and dealing with people. Although the term "hacker" is used in the cracking sense here, real hackers, programmers, are for the most part social. I liked the "Mr. Roger's" part of the article.

he goes his testing, or some of it at least on the live slashdot server because of obvious reasons. as others mentioned the load, the slashdot load is incredible, and i cant imagine something that would emulate it. where do you think the slashdot effect name came from? :) secondly, he wants the users to test out the features, see if they like them, dont like them, want modifications. cant do this on a non-live workstation. and third, the pur e experience of it. the whole reason why Rob started Slashdot was to run a news site and to also test his web skills, i believe. so those are some easy reasons why. i dont know about you, but i dont ever really have problems with slashdot, just the occasional server-down for a few mins. :)
