So the premise of this study is that: our (human) mathematics has proved that no extraterrestrial computer (mathematics) can be powerful enough to simulate our reality.
How could we know that?
...also, we, the same humans that once said: 640k should be enough for everybody.
Maybe the E.T. supercomputer spun up some more VM's just for this Oxford University experiment. ...and the Alien is chuckling as it mumbles "That should keep them confused for a while'
Last night, I went to use my wife's HP laptop. We share a common login/password. as soon as I pressed enter on the password the updates immediately started. no prompts! When the PC finally booted up all my wife's work was lost because it did not close the open applications gracefully.
Here is the actual model, a model that will exist for the next 1,000 years.
1. Someone (or something) gathers requirement.
2. They get it wrong.
3. They develop the wrong thing that doesn't even work they way they thought it should
4. The project leader is canned
5. The software is implemented by an outside vendor, with all the flaws.
6. The software operates finally after 5 years of modifications to both the software and the workflows (to match the flaws in the software).
7. As soon as it's all running properly and everyone is trained, a new project is launched to redo it, "the right way".
8. Goto 1
You just accurately described a 6 year project within our organization....and it made me cry
Does this model have a name? an urban dictionary name?
if not it needs one.
I had to read the summary twice to figure out if the definition of a hacker here meant causing 'destructive cyber attacks' or ' technology tinkerers'

I don't want to seem mean but I suddenly lost my job to India outsourcing in *exactly* the same way. ...exactly.
This union only cared about their interests, namely collecting their union dues and raiding other unions for more members (dues)
Employees in the same job category got the same pay so it was a race to see who could do the least amount of work
Do drugs on the job? steal money from the company? no problem the union will protect you.
Unions have some benefits and can do some good but they were not for me.
So you can't take a laptop into the passenger cabin because of "bomb risk", but it's ok to put that same laptop in the cargo hold where an explosion could still take down the aircraft? Or is there some other risk here, like the NSA/CIA needs time alone with your laptop unobserved?
I seem to remember that luggage/cargo within the plane is placed inside specially designed containers that absorb the forces of bombs?
If so, it would be safer but by how much I do not know. Which airlines use these, not sure.

True, this isn't a new concept. but when Amazon starts to take business away from many on brick and mortar stores including the giant that is Walmart....this new Amazon grocery service is important news for all other grocery stores. Especially when Amazon may have more resources behind them or just simply....do it better.
Cable One is a small cable company that has a blatant monopoly and is raising prices too high. As such, all the other larger cable companies are worries the government is going to step in to regulate Cable one. If that happens, ALL cable companies in the country will be regulated.

3 or 4 years ago I gave up all those social network messaging systems and gravitated back to email. Its working out great.
When Facebook forced users to install their messaging app that was a serious nail in the coffin
Most of my daily work in coordination through email.
I don't see that changing for years.
...Myself, I wish that I could also get LED bulbs that changed colour temperature gradually depending on the time of day, and that they wouldn't be expensive and hackable (Like Phillips... ). I live in the North where some winter days are darker than summer nights, and thus artificial light is important all day.
I wanted to try Phillips wake-up light but thought they were too expensive for something that might not work
I had an old digital picture frame that wasn't being used by a family member.
I quickly created and saved about 50 pictures that gradually moved from black to orange to yellow.
photoshop -> adjust brightness -> save
I set the digital picture frame to auto turn on at 6am. It worked!
embarrassing hack? maybe.
You beat me to it!

Thank you Kiuas , that was one of the most eye-opening reads I have had in a long long time.
This type of insight into behavior is can be very useful in every day life.
I worked for a large international company in one of the many IT departments. After 1 year of work the department was outsourced to India and everyone laid off. (that's another story)
Since I was one of the top 10 performing employees in the old department we got an opportunity to join another smaller IT department.
The lay off was a surprise I was young, I needed a pay cheque so I took it.
I later found out my new managers husband was a company director (red flag?)
After a few months I was unhappy with the new type of work, it just wasn't similar to the job I first signed up for.
On top of this the manager gossiped, literally whispered behind peoples backs, not just about me but others. She also made some vindictive decisions that impacted employees like new 5am start times.
I found another job and politely gave 2 weeks notice in writing.
On returning to my desk I was asked to leave immediately with security escort.
This was very unusual and I know now my manager was try to make some kind of show. I shrugged it off.
Since I had made friends I kept in touch with old coworkers.
A few months after I left I got a phone call from an old coworker asking if I had been coming back to the old place of work.
I said no and asked why.
He said my old manager had been talking to each employee telling them to look out because I was "...seen in the parking lot with a pipe".
!
I'm not making this up or exaggerating. So she was trying to smear me as some kind of violent ex-employee.
To this day I have no idea what she had against me but since she treated other employee the same I suspect it wasn't me but her that had issues.
It took me many months to get over this. I don't think she knows how much it hurt.
A year or two later I heard she was removed from her position for skewing statistics in her favour. She moved to another department.
I'm not sure anyone take their baby home 10 minutes after birth! I think what he means is that the baby stopped breathing in the hospital, 10 min after birth.
I'm not sure how often it happens but it happened to us. There was still fluid in the lungs that had to come out.
Ditto, our son stopped breathing for a short period after birth, it made us neurotic We have an Owlet and quite honestly, after the first 2 weeks or so of use I realized the Owlet is not so much for the baby, its so that WE can sleep better at night not worrying as much, by getting up every 10 minutes to check if he is in trouble.
S.I.D.S. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Cause mostly unknown. All babies are at risk during months 2-4 whether they are healthy or not.
The Owlet works and has been worth every cent of the $250 we spent. I would recommend the Owlet (I do not work for nor sell Owlets)

Be sure to run adblockers, stripping out adverts makes a big difference.
But even slashdot is a big fat bloated pig. no reason at all to load everything and a giant pile of JS.
I highly recommend https://alterslash.org it removes all the bloat from slashdot.org Thanks to Jonathan Hedley!
this slashdot post just feels more like a statement than an actual article.
