    And they have deep pockets...

Why? Valve isn't making the boxes. They are refining a Linux distribution specifically for running Steam. They've been refining Steam to work on a big screen for over a year already. The really hard part is getting Windows only titles to work on a Linux based system. They are partnering with PC manufacturers to bundle the SteamOS and controller with. If they don't sell they can throw Windows on there and sell them as a regular PC.

  3. Define your parameters on Ask Slashdot: Can Valve's Steam Machines Compete Against the Xbox One and PS4? · · Score: 2

Of course they can compete. Can they earn a significant share of the market? Probably not at first but then it took Sony years to catch up to Nintendo and then Microsoft years to catch up with Sony. Since SteamOS is free it can proliferate rapidly if it can actually deliver what it is promising. For the uninitiated who just want to hook a console up and have it work the SteamBox while pricey is a good option and not much more than the original PS3 but without all the pesky restrictions. Valve has been moving in this direction slow and deliberately for the last year. They aren't rushing into anything.

I'm not saying they WILL capitalize but until Apple launched the iPod every industry expert was singing their death knell.

To be fair, the Novell comparison doesn't exactly match up... Novell at least (to their credit) diversified a little, and went all-in to Linux (albeit too late).

Blackberry has done none of this, and (to extend the poker analogy) merely doubled-down on their own increasingly lousy hand.

    Same misinformed song different singer.

BlackBerry bought The Astonishing Tribe (They designed the UI for the G1) to redesign the BlackBerry UI.
They also bought QNX to be the base for the new BB OS 10.
In fact they were quite aggressive in acquiring properties to bolster their brand.

On top of that they have diversified the BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Services) to secure iOS and Android devices.

The problem BlackBerry has is mind share and they haven't got it anymore. The new ecosystem is actually quite impressive but without a large enough audience it is all moot. To get that mind share they will need a killer feature not available on the other systems and it's not that easy to do.

But until BlackBerry actually announces the layoffs I am putting this one squarely in the rumor to get stock lowered for a buyout box.

The email on the iPhone and Android are cumbersome to me compared to BB and having to remember to change the password for email on my phone when I change it on my PC so I don't get locked out is a PITA. My BB is always connected to the company network but if I want to connect on the iPhone I have to launch VPN and if the screen times out while I am making a decision I have to start the whole process over. I am waiting for the company to roll out a BES 10 and maybe then the iPhone won't be such a burden to use. Ironic a BlackBerry product might make the iPhone more palatable.
