Why not expand that to other areas... like music, sports and movies? Countless people want to be make it and become a professional musician, athlete, actor, etc.

I don't think anyone would dispute the fact that few ever make it to such a level in such fields, but should that prevent a person from trying? Absolutely not? If people don't at least try to make good on their dreams they've got zero chance of making it... they just have to be realistic and recognize that they may not make it and have a backup plan... like an English or Communications major so that they can play football in college.

One of my major beefs with unions (and one of the biggest reasons that I would never join one) is that they provide the ability for... dead weight. People who either are unable or unwilling to contribute to the bottom line are able to be carried along on the shoulders of those who are capable and do do the work.

One of the reasons that many conservative groups opposed the TLD was the thought that giving the adult industry a place to do their... sinful business also gave them some measure of... legitimacy. Instead of being able to be firm in saying "we disapprove of what you are doing so please stop" they are forced into an alternative position of position of "we disapprove of what you are doing and if you won't stop... at least do it over there."

Then again this is in many ways similar to the hold up in the release of the HPV vaccine which could save millions of lives... only some are concerned that because it will effectively remove warts from the list of possible STD's that it would encourage young people to have more unprotected sex.

There is some logic to the argument... however in both cases the fear of what would happen with the change is minor compared to the benefits... assuming in the case of the .xxx TLD that it could be enforced.

Sure by saying this I will be labeled as a Microsoft lover and what not... but honestly... I fail to see the problem here.

It would be irresponsible for Microsoft NOT to investigate allegations of piracy at this level as was likely the initial cause of the emails in question. Sure they could turn it over to the BSA, however for all we know this could have been a report to a person who was ill-informed of the proper procedure for relaying reports of piracy and took it upon themselves to investigate.

After such an investigation both parties tend to want the violator to be legit so having access to a sales department (or being within one) does help that make that easier afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, I am a major fan of free markets and capitalism... something we really don't have in this area in large part because of government regulations and municipal/regional monopolies that do much to lock out competition.

Until the cost of retraining and transition can be brought well below the cost of an MS Office license... Microsoft will win this battle as people are very familiar with their products and anything else is strange and unusable until they can be brought to a similar level of familiarity which is never free either in lost productivity or outright training.
