four obscure flash-in-the-pan programs which do nothing to advance the cause of Free Software are getting a brief bit of exposure.
OpenOffice.org has enabled the Free Software movement to further penetrate the corporate desktop market, and for that reason I say it does not get enough kudos.
Also, one of these is a dvd library, which is technically not even legal to use (IANAL, of course). At least I don't have to worry about the RIAA busting down my door for saving word documents under OO.org!
That's four discriptive names of windows programs. The grandparent poster was NOT saying that there were no windows programs with silly names (eg: quake); but that there are no OSS programs with sensible names.
The problem with the name Xouvert is that it's french, and not english. America has a strong dislike for anything french, if you haven't noticed.
So, we're awarding wasted duplication of effort?

Now we're stuck with two debuggers (Valgrind and gdb) each having stunted functionality. Why didn't the people in charge of Valgrind put their effort into improving gdb (and taking advantage of the already present infrastructure at no added cost)?
As far as watching dvds on linux goes; speaking as an american, I will not buy dvds until it is legally feasible for me to watch them on my linux computer.
More importantly, what is it going to take for the consumer to both stand up aggressively (none of this "oh, I hate the riaa --ooo! eminem has a new cd out -fap fap fap" crap) and be heard?
Given that the market is no longer consumer oriented, is it too late for any meaninful (note that clause) change to occur?
That's why I'm using windows 98

It's free as in freely included with the used computer I own. free from annoying OS/License zealots.
It is very rare to find violations of the BSD license. In fact, I cannot think of a single one.
Why is this, when examples of flagrant GNU abuse abound? I think it's a simple matter:
respect.
individuals, particularly corporations, don't have much respect for hippies and hackers; whereas they do respect academic institutions and the authority thereof.
So, I imagine the thinking process goes like this:
BSD Product: "hmm, I better leave that alone, wouldn't want the university of california after me"
GNU Product: "ok, we'll snag this, this and this. What? License? fuck 'em. what are they gonna do - make me sit in an unventilated room with dick stalman?"
a good kernel, and a good filesystem. both of which imply BSD.
On Linux, you can either browse the web, do signifigant ( >5meg) file copying OR listen to audio files. One at a time, and certainly not all three at the same time. To try to mix two of those tasks will bring the system to a slow crawl.
This is NOT true for BSD or even windows XP (for fuck's sake!); which is probably why apple chose BSD as the core kernel of their OS despite linux being available for their platform.
I have a four-yeard-old gateway which is even less powerful (400mhz) than that, but I can still play most of the games I own (I have to hit the $5 bin for new games, unless I play free ones such as freeciv and dopewars) and knoppix/XP/98 run just fine on it (except for open office, which lurches to start up).
I want to upgrade so I can play with things such as bochs and graphics comfortably, and being poor it's going to be months before I can do that. But I have enough that I can still do that I feel I can afford to wait.
Basically, the casino has the advantages in ways that you probably can never imagine, and will never hear about; so why not just take your money and throw it off a bridge? Hey! You can 'gamble' that maybe the wind will blow it back to you with interest!
Also, I didn't say that they *stopped* using rent-a-thugs, either. I only cited that specific time-frame because that was when I saw it for myself. It may be different now, it may not be.
Another interesting factoid is that at one point (mid-1990's) it was technically illegal to be sitting on the side in seattle. This was used, predictably enough, to harass homeless people and "beautify" the city (without addressing the underlying problems of astronomically high rents, etc).
t may save tax dollars - but it is a step toward private business enforcing it's own laws. Has anyone read Snowcrash (by Neal Steavenson) where the different parts of the city all have their own rent-a-cops that enforce different laws?
I haven't read that particular novel; but I lived in down-town seattle in the late 80's and early 1990s when the merchants' association rented their own police force who rode around in black uniforms and mostly harrassed homeless people and various "undesireables".
So, private businesses hiring their own thugs^W police is not a new concept to me, personally.
"God, can you image the anger if DVD players started coming with cameras installed in them that spied on you to 'study family watching' habits or something retarded like that."
No, I can't. given how easy people are to condition ("it's for quality feedback purposes!", "it's to enhance the capabilities of your movie experience!") I can _easily_ see that, or see ads, happening.
That's part of why I don't watch tv. Fuck them, fuck their ads and fuck their shitty content! (The two exceptions on tv are not worth justifying paying to watch 'survivor' and it's a-kins.)
If you keep reading, god gave moses a whole book of do's and don'ts which boil down to "if soome-one does this, stone them. if someone does that, stone them". The adultery and homosexuality laws spring immediately to mind, but that is only the _tip_ of the iceberg.
Oh, by the way, that's not even taking into consideration the "cleansing" of Palestine^W Canaan.
I didn't lose my mod privs then, I don't expect to now.

two years already? My how time flies; at least we have had (and still have) kuro5hin as a viable alternative.

um, when did Ford use stormtroopers, anyways?
I don't know about linux or the unixes, though.
IT's not a matter of ability, but of adoption (no-one's using it, though most os's support it)

just curious where to look for truly independent/alternative[-to-the-riaa] music :)

in 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2, I am unable to use my usb keyboard after boot up, as the operating system seems to not recognize it.
This is not a problem in the 4.x series.
Do you lot intend on fixing and/or restoring that?
