Do you have to work 4 days in a row? I think it would be somewhat easier to receuperate if you worked (for example) 2 days, 1 off, then 2 more. Also, I find that having a consistent sleep schedule helps my body and mind function better than sleeping way in on days off. (I'm still really bad about this one, though)
Maybe they'll print out punch cards and hang them on posts when they pass by like what was done on old trains. It would probably get better throughput than RFC 1149
"Proprietary format" just means "the real world doesn't know how to decode it yet".
Then I (unclearly) was trying to point out that patented and trade-secreted stuff does get sued over when someone reverse-engineers things (example: the DVD encryption scheme)
Actually, SMB was originally a standard, but MS decided to "embrace" it, and we all know how that goes.
Also, I don't really understand what you mean by saying that once something is decodeable it is an open standard. If this were the case, no one would've been sued over the DeCSS stuff.
I still wonder why companies don't use BSD for things like this. Sure, they could use Linux, but it then there's all the compliance with the GPL and such. With OpenBSD touting security so much and NetBSD able to run on my dead-squirrel-in-a-cardboard-box machine, they would seem like an ideal choice.
So, no, not really well summed up as "the inspiration [...] to create Magic".
Yeah, the inspiration for something new has to make it 100% the same as the old thing. Obviously. OK, so maybe the parent could've said "an inspiration for M:TG".
A problem I see with this is this: most "classic" games and ones that defined their era will require the library to have a copy of the parent system on hand. Sure, there's emulation, but that would be a legal nightmare to figure out. I would love to be able to let my kids play the "classic" games that I played when I was little, but I think it will be very hard with the copyright insanity we have going on recently.
Some people have severe, as in potentialy lethal, reactions to nuts
Actually, both my brother and father have very severe peanut allergies. They basically read most prepackaged foods' ingredient list to verify that there's not something in there. I just think it's silly when the first ingredient is listed as "PEANUTS" that they feel the need to put a warning that says "may contain..." on it.
... I never have to do the "self-frisk" whenever a phone rings.
A friend of mine told me about the training day for the campus student computing helpdesk: "picture 20 geeks in a room. Then a cellphone goes off. Every one of them checks to see if it's theirs. It was beautiful."
Whenever I hear the quote by the Diebold guy promising to deliver Ohio to Bush, I have serious doubts as to whether they've ever been "just a contractor".
China still has a repressive few who are determined to remain in power
I really hate this. China and the USSR doesn't/didn't define what Communism is (I'm not talking about Marxism). Ask most (American) people what they think communism is, and if they have any idea at all, it'll be something like totalitarianism. I think that if the economic ideals of communism (everyone contributes, everyone receives) were put into place in a political system, you'd have something like ancient Greece. (yes, I know Greece restricted voting to non-slave males and other stuff etc etc)
I have to say, even though I haven't played many of the FF games, I really admire Uematsu as a composer and musician. His music is so incredibly good, and I love listening to it. It makes great study music when I'm reading or writing something.

I guess I was kind of confused about you saying

It's "Night of the Living Directive!" Starring a bunch of old European guys! And Steve Ballmer!
Can you imagine Microsoft, or Adobe, or EA Games, making most or all of their software open-source ... (?)
id software? IBM? (Okay, so IBM doesn't have "most" of its software opensource but it is releasing things)
And ten years ago, they probably wouldn't have thought of making a portable music player...so I'll just wait and see what happens.

Um,RTFA? It's in there in the "installation and configuration" section. Some guy like two comments up mentioned this too.

Yeah, Bach is teh suck. I can't see how that guy ever helped music in any way.
So all I have to do to receive honorary knighthood is set an industry back about 20 years? I'll get right on that...

Am I alone in not giving a rat's ass about Jobs' AAC files? I'll worry about them when I see a single file in that format.
Even better, I've seen some (clear) jars of peanuts state "THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS NUTS AND/OR PEANUTS"
Does the iPod play WMA files? Do either of them play Vorbis? No? Oh. So multiply the hard drive capacity by ...

So now MS is paying us for its "features". Sweet.

Actually, although they (of course) weren't videogame-only, the Pixies did a cover of the theme from "NARC".
The press will eat that up as "Public Decries MPAA Tactics, Boycotts DVDs!"
There's a problem here. Nearly all media companies in the USA are owned by the MPAA/RIAA member companies.
Technocrat?
