Hopefully there will be some fixes in the linux version. For some reason, when I click on.rpm files, the download dialog OK button is grayed out... (no, I don't think it's an omen)
I've always found Tingle to be amusing. This is probably because he's the most "uber-japanese non-researched-for-localization-to-USA character" ever. At least in such a popular game series as Zelda.
All the problems you describe can (arguably) be solved if we could get out from under the insanity that is corporate media in the US. I find it so frustrating that these dinosaur companies are buying protection for their failing business model that needs to evolve into this millenium.
With things like video-on-demand and internet distribution, small teams of not-well-funded people can make amazing art. Consider Homestar Runner and Red vs Blue. HR has allowed the two brothers who make it to make a living off of selling T-Shirts. This shows that an independent body can create something wildly popular. The Rise Of Blogging (tm) also shows that new content can become an instant phenomenon.
I think that the solution to this is to boycott our cable/satellite companies, MPAA movie theaters and RIAA record labels and be vocal about it. Write to our elected officials and tell them that local and independent media is important, and remind them that free expression on a local level is what will make or break them, as well as being the lifeblood of democracy.
Turn-based strategy and wargames sound like a good match. Also, MUDs may be playable if you can type at a speed where it doesn't make the game unplayable.
I was going to comment on some other stuff in this thread, but this comment definitely deserves a second.
Paying 5-10 bucks to go see a band perform LIVE is so much better than paying $6-8 for a crappy movie. You also get to hang out with people during a show, talk between songs, maybe chat up some chick for a while. People need to get away from the crappy consumption-based media (OMG I LOVE TAHT MOVIE!11) and get out and experience something real. Theater is good too.
Exactly, it's stupid. The Windows 64-bit binaries take up more RAM, and the 32-bit apps they use don't take advantage of any of the new instructions, so it's basically a waste of time.
Wasn't intended as flamebait. The reason I even considered saying that is because the most problematic patents (LZW and MP3, again) didn't come into wide use right away (okay maybe.zip was used a lot, but not for GIFs back in '83). I don't think 5 years is a "very very long" time. If LZW was restricted to 5 years, it would've been in the public domain by the time the WWW was invented.
And here Up Nort in the upper midwest (Minnesota), most people think of any state south of Iowa as redneck-land. Never mind that they're themselves rednecks...
Not really. Computers can't think up new ways to factor things. A savant could think up a new way to crack encryption and do it immediately with no writing and testing code. Computers also have a hard time "ruling out" options that they aren't sure will work. Think about how powerful a computer has to be to beat someone in chess (i.e. Deep Blue)
Where are the ideas about possibly allowing software patents in a limited form? I think it would be reasonable if things like compression algorithms (LZW, MP3) were allowed for like 5-8 years. This way, companies can still research new ways of doing things while not getting undercut 3 months after they release new software. The smaller time would be more appropriate, since computing seems to evolve a lot faster than other industries.
I don't see how it would be so hard for Blizzard to allow people to set up an account without a CD-Key and then allow someone else to sell/transfer the CD-Key to that account.
Belive it or not, the BSD license is much more open.
This depends on how you define "open". What's certainly true is that it's differently open/free.
If you dont like to extend the much greater freedom, then dont use it.. But dont bash it or those that choose to use it.
I don't understand why people have to bash the GPL/BSD because it's "not correct/free enough". I also like how you bash the GPL, but then claim no one should bash BSD. For some things, one of them works, for others, the other. If it's your code, you get to choose. If it's not, shut up and GET OVER IT.
Three Licenses for the GNU-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Corporate-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Hacker Men doomed to die,
One for Bruce Perens and Eric Raymond on their dark throne.
In the Land of CVS where the Versions lie.
One License to rule them all, One License to find them,
One License to bring them all and in the darkness bind() them.

You had a virus! Ahh!
it's not a virus, so you'd have to *go* there to be in danger,
I don't think that word means what you think it means. A worm is self-replicating without needing any other assistance.
But for how long?

I had a (not-paid-for) subscription to PC World a while back. I seem to recall them printing PpP for both photos and text.
The original Halo was a seminal moment in console gaming. The intuitive controls ...
Bullshit. Obviously someone never played Turok. In 1997.
As for music, go check out your local scene.

NSA would be foolish to employ savants

I'd say it's more "+1 Insightful" and "+1 Scary" than "+1 Funny"
Interestingly, the semi-failed "web appliance" known as iOpener had a 'pizza' button that would take you to papajohns.com
You know, they're going to need a lot of years to give out these Lifetime Achievement awards... (Miyamoto, Molyneaux, Kojima, Meier...)
It's like serving "French" fries (i.e. McDonalds) at an exotic food expo in France.

My first time...
Did you use a firewall?
This just strengthens the view that computer science is a pseudo science like social sciences in the scientific community.
Yeah, there's no reason we should study algorithms. Nobody uses them in day to day life. Oh wait...
I don't see how it would be so hard for Blizzard to allow people to set up an account without a CD-Key and then allow someone else to sell/transfer the CD-Key to that account.
Well, at leats its not viral as the GPL is.

Sorry, had to be done.
To mix this with the strategy of using one strong enemy against another is brilliance!
Ever heard of phages?
