What's the point in changing standards when the current one is ok? I mean current DVD technology is good enough for most video uses. This "improvement" can merely scare people from buying that DVD players to replace their VHS systems. It's too early to change standards! I mean VHS lasted for more than ten years and so should the current DVD technology.

The point is that while DVD looks great on most standard TV's, HDTV's are another matter. Suddenly you can see lots of compression artifacts. This isn't much of an issue now, but it will be soon enough.

I doubt DVD2, or whatever it will be called, will arrive in the next 5 years and if it does it will be in parallell with the current technology and cater mostly to videophiles and gadget freaks. There's a lot of money to be made from early adopters.

I for one think it's a great idea to decide on a standard before companies start producing their own technologies. That has caused problems again and again. Nice to see people are learning from past mistakes.

They were detecting these planets by watching for "transits", in other words eclipses. If you look at a star&planet from a random direction there is a VERY small chance that it will happen to line up exactly right to see an eclipse. I would estimate the chances as several thousand to one. On the other hand, it is impossible to tell these partial eclipses apart from reasonably stable sun spots, especially if the star is monitored for this brief period of time. Both decrease the star's apparent luminosity, and both would appear to circle the star.

Worst-case scenario, there isn't a single real planet among the aberrations found using this method. Unlikely, but possible.

But once you get into compulsory licensing, this sort of discretion goes completely out the Window, and creative types can no longer choose for themselves who they will associate with."

Not necessarily. They way I read (skimmed through) it, this would work similarly to the rules for recording covers of old songs. The original artist can't stop you from doing so but you are required to pay them.

With cover songs there most likely are rules for the sort of things you mentioned about your essay. For example; if the Hitlerjugend Choir wanted to rerecord some Public Enemy song, the lyrics would probably be seen in a very different context and the release would very likely be stopped.

In your particular porn-monger case, your essay was essentially used as advertising and there are much stricter rules for that. That's why you don't hear some Britney Spears sound-alike singing her latest hit in a tampax commercial. If companies could do that, they would.
