  1. Re:Have you ever looked at these guys? on What Do Geek Squad Technicians Actually Do? · · Score: 1

Actually, this can make for good, live entertainment. When a Best Buy employee (Geek Squad included) ask me if they can help me I pose a technical question to which I know they won't have the answer. (ex. "Do you know how to resync a HACMP cluster when the LAN is down?") The expressions that go across their faces are priceless!

  6. Government in-action on U.S. Service Personnel Data Stolen · · Score: 1

I've worked on military and government contracts. We had the same problems as every company does: employees/contractors/government personel taking home their work and working on it on their personal PCs. Regardless of the number of NDAs they sign, the computer security briefings they get, and the number of times they are told by management they do it anyway. Are they wrong for doing this? Of course! Will they lose their security clearance over this? Probably, depending on what their rank/GS level is.

Training, a no-exception penalty policy for "losing" sensitive data, and encryption are what is needed to prevent this in the future. Unfortunately, the government seems to be a little short on $$$.

  7. DVD burning on DVD Burner Comparison · · Score: 1

I've been using HP DVD burners (both single and dual layer) for quite some time. I've found that they perform very well on Windows, OS X, and Linux. I've had some trouble with the Lite-On drives but the HP units have never failed to perform. I know that Plextor is supposed to be the best CD/DVD drive maker, but I'm really not interested in paying their asking price.

DIY has been part of the space program since Chuck Yeager used a broom handle to close the door on the X-1 after breaking his arm in a horse riding accident. I think the best example is when the Apollo 13 astronauts rigged an air scrubber and used their lunar module as a propulsion system to get home after the service module blew up.

Nice to see the tradition being carried on.

I've got to agree with you; I visited Australia and New Zealand a few years ago. It has to be the most relaxing trip overseas I've ever taken! The people are friendly, polite, and helpful. Everyone was relaxed and laid back and really embodied the "No Worries" state of mind.

I've been considering moving to Australia to get away from what America has become. Sad to see the country I was born in becoming what our founders hated most.

I think the taxpayer money that was spent on research and development of what became the Internet gives us, the American people, a right to say how that infrastructure should work.

As for why the government doesn't go after the oil companies, it's because their lobbyists pay the government more money than the telcos can.

  16. I told you so! on SGI Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy · · Score: 1

I used to do work for a program that bought tons of SGI hardware to replace an older system. I told them, at the time, that SGI was losing marketshare in its primary marketplace (computer animation, rendering, etc). I didn't see SGI being around much longer and urged them to reconsider and purchase from a company that would still be around in a few years. Well, you can guess the rest.

Nice to see them spending our tax dollars on hardware that is already obsolete.

This is not a troll, just a catharsistic reaction to stupid management on a government program.
