So if there are 15 different ways to do it the on click patent covers them all?

    By your logic:

"A device to turn the contained combustion of a volatile fuel to rotary motion " describes the internal combustion engine.

Saying a method of clicking a button to add an item to a shoppiung cart and check out would not.

    That's pretty ordinary skillish.

If thats pretty ordinary skillish then it is obvious and not patentable.

  2. Re:Why? on Microsoft Wants More Credit for Inventions · · Score: 1

I thought Pateents told you how to do something and had to be explicit enough that you could build it. Most of the software patents that I've seen describe an idea but in no way describe how to implement it.

So saying using a do while loop to increment a counter to count records (ok major prior art I know) would be a valid patent. Saying a method of clicking a button to add an item to a shoppiung cart and check out would not.

Shouldn't you have to describe in depth the method.

Thats the problem with software patents, they are too much like trade secrets. I think if you want to patent software you should have to submit the actual source code as that is the method. If you would rather hide the source then you cannot patent it. and who cares if people see it you have a patent on it.

The problem is they are not charging you for a cd with the source code, they are charging you for a subscription to their service (ie updates). and to gewt the source code for a binary you have already bought you must subscribe to their forum and updates to recieve a download of the code. I think that requiring the purchase of a subscription is a "further restriction".

But I guess thats for the courts to decide.

In the Navy they use a system called a Red Tag systems. When you are working on equipment and you must kill the power to it you put a Red Tag on it and anyone who violates a red tag suffers severe consequences (up to court martial) So if your dad did not tag the fuse box and decided to work on the radar system (live radar will kill you if you stand in front of the dish) he was not following navy procedure.

I've seen the outcome when the Red Tag procedure is not followed, it cost a friend of mine his hand.

I would say you won't get anything stolen from you returned but if the evidence is there the state will use it to put someone in jail.

I can see no beneficial reason for this as most consumer routers have a hardware reset that reloads the factory defaults.

What I also remember is a $1000 (US) bet between the author of the book and a professor who's name escapes me at the moment. The bet was that the cost of a cross section of commodities, picked by the author, adjusted for inflation, would be LOWER in 20 years than they were at the start of the bet. The book's author lost. Every time, he lost.

The bet was not really a cross section of commodities it was 5 metals (copper, chrome, nickel, tin, and tungsten). Things that weren't taken into account were increased efficiency in mining processes , new recycling processes , and a variety of other influences. I would not take the Simon-Ehrlich bet to seriously as very few other factors were taken into account when deciding the outcome.
