THX-1138 Finally Coming to DVD

OMM0000 writes "George Lucas' first film, THX 1138 is finally coming to DVD. They've also launched a new site, as USA Today reports. As webmaster of a certain THX-1138 fan site (which will remain nameless to avoid slashdotting), this is excellent news. For all of you lamenting the Star Wars prequels, be sure to see where Lucas' roots in filmmaking are."

The reviews of this movie are all over the place; some see it as an undestated masterpiece, others view it as boring pretentious crap. IMO, it was ok, but not great. THX has both form and contents, its design was creative and the movie director had something to say. So people can relate to its themes and see parallels or metaphors (not so subtle, a trade mark of Lucas). THX is the anti-thesis of the western or post-armageddon movies. Ultimately THX is not about technology but rather about living in society and the degrees of alienation that comes with. In many westerns and futuristic post-catastrophes movies the hero is "alone" on the move riding his horse, driving his car or his boat [:-)], master of his destiny and in control (I can't recall a female hero in that SciFi category, I'm sure Hollywood will fix that). The social pressure is absent (hence the seductive power of these movies), and usually the story is the mess that happens when the hero has to interact with others, willingly or not (typical case: Pale Rider). THX reversed the settings, the "hero" could not be more embedded in his society (conceived as claustrophobic as it could be) and spends 86 mins of footage to get "free". Now, unless you adopted the unabomber life style in the middle of nowhere you do live in society, hence the interest of watching THX. But it's not an easy viewing.

In contrast, with the eye pleasing Star Wars, beside the early teenage boy attractive "The Force Be With You" there is little you can salvage, or maybe the "I'm your father"?

Why aren't they doing movie like THX anymore? Well, they do. Gattaca stands proud in the middle of the Hollywood SciFi cacophony, meaning Independence Day, Star Wars prequels, Godzilla, Armageddon, it's endless... There is also the first Matrix: remember the traumatic awakening of the hero? Too bad the 2nd and 3rd iterations moved toward intellectual paucity.
