"Levels of corruption could not simply be ascribed to the low moral standards of the corrupt officials (involved), but also loopholes in administrative mechanism," said Li Peilin, deputy director of the Institute of Sociology under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

  8. As an avid user on Initial Review of Microsoft's Acrylic BETA · · Score: 5, Informative

As an avid user of photoshop, and someone who is generally unfriendly to MS even I must say that this review is total crap. After reading this review I have no idea what features Acrylic has really, the only things compared are the brushes, image navigation, and plugins.

What about things like how it performs in a digital camera workflow, prepress workflow, web design workflow, etc. I have no idea from this how this program handles color spaces, vectors, or myriad other features. Hell, this review doesn't even mention how well it supports type.

The lack of discussion regarding acrylic's vector capabilities is the most damning thing since acrylic uses a ton of code from an acclaimed vector program (Creature House Expression) Microsoft bought from another company.

I've been waiting for a decent review of Acrylic, but this is not it. It should also be mentioned that Adobe Photoshop has a truly massive featureset which almost no one uses in full. It's a bigass swiss army knife with different facets used by different industries. Duplicating the functionality of such a program should take a VERY long time, give MS a little break here.

Psychiatrists and psychologists are often to blame, another problem is general practitioners who hand out prozac like candy. Administering these drugs takes a lot of knowledge and experience, I know far too many people who get their anti-depressants straight from their GP. These drugs really should only be prescribed by psychiatrists. Hell, finding a decent psychiatrist (I was misdiagnosed by 3 very highly paid ones) is hard enough, having a completely unequiped GP administer these is one of the worst aspects of the current US medical system.

Bipolar disorder, which you mention, is often not diagnosed, especially not in the milder cases (which I have). It's quite amazing how wildly the quality of psychiatrists varies.

  11. A truly visual filmmaker? on Review: Star Wars Episode III · · Score: 1

To say that Lucas is an excellent visual film maker is to be too broad. He cannot compete with Coppola, Kubrick, or Fellini. Lucas is an excellent art director, but mediocre to terrible in every other department. His blueprint for the Star Wars universe, their ships, uniforms, etc. are extremely well done and have been amazingly influential and rightly so.

However, the cinematography on A New Hope is mediocre and rather straightforward. Compared to The Empire Strikes Back the cinematography is trash. Lucas has taken a turn from mediocre to terrible however with the release of the newest 3 star wars. The editing transitions (wipes, constantly) are amateurish looking even, and the universe looks cartoonish. I havn't seen Sith yet, but the two that preceeded it lacked any of the gravitas of the originals. They look like crappy fakery.
