    I did read the article.

It's clear that if ACDSee can't show 11MP JPEGs fast enough for the editor on modern hardware then it's the wrong tool for the job. Sports Illustrated wrote a custom app to transfer images from the cameras (I've written one myself and it looks and functions in a very similar manner) then they need to write one that will pre-cache more than one image ahead. It could also do tricks like show the next three images as small thumbnails on the bottom of the screen, letting the editor quickly skip the shots of the photographers foot. No matter, a 3GHz machine is way more than enough hardware to show large JPEGs at 3 frames a second.

  3. Re:Still using PCs on 1,028,000 Digital Photographs · · Score: 1

Why would it matter? The bottleneck isn't the time it take the computer to display the image, it's the time it takes the human brain to register and think about what they're seeing.

Regardless, if for some reason the split second delay is a problem the next image can be pre-loaded while the human is looking at the current image. Faster and more specialized hardware is not the answer.

  4. Re:I gave up and ripped my CDs on Obtaining Legal MP3s Outside of the U.S.? · · Score: 4, Interesting
If you live in Canada this is a non-issue for you as you can download freely from almost any source. This is due to the levy paid on blank media and the sanity of the Canadian Copyright Board.

    From http://neil.eton.ca/copylevy.shtml:
However, unless the legislation is changed or the courts interpret matters differently, it appears that making a private copy for your own use of a musical work downloaded in any manner from the internet is not an infringement of copyright. In their decision, the Copyright Board states:

The regime does not address the source of the material copied. There is no requirement in Part VIII that the source copy be a non-infringing copy. Hence, it is not relevant whether the source of the track is a pre-owned recording, a borrowed CD, or a track downloaded from the Internet.
The more complex answer to the question posed above is you cannot post a song on the internet in any manner, but you can make a private copy of any songs you find on the net.

Once a customer gets that letter they're going to be tension between them and the ISP.

This assumes consumers are sufficiently educated about what they are buying. I am sure you understand they do not know anything about how much it costs the ISP to offer a dedicated 56K connection. Even if a consumer were to think about the economics of your business it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that if you can offer a 386kb connection for $35 a month then you can offer a seventh of that service for $15 a month.

It doesn't matter the ISP tries to change the definition of the word "unlimited". It is clear there is a large discrepency between what the ISP is attempting to sell and what is being delivered to the consumer. That is at best criminally false advertising and at worst outright fraud. This whole problem can be avoided by simply clarifying what is "unlimited" or avoiding the term in the first place.

And thing of this: If you don't meat the customers expectations it's going to come back and bite you in the ass every time.
