But there is NEVER a reason to shut down a Windows XP computer (if you're not installing anything or changing settings). My computer has been on for 92 days and is still as stable and fast as it was on day 1 (super fast and 100% stable).
You know, when you're not using your computer for long periods of time (say, 92 days) you should shut it off. Needless to say, my experiences with XP's stability have been a bit less sterling than yours. (Generally after a few days it's good and ready for a reboot. If I'm developing, once a day minimum).
I can't imagine that little bit of lost heat was the difference between life and death for anyone. But, the fact that we have evolved the feature suggests it was.
Yup. It's about 15 below here right, now. Definitely makes a difference.
Speak for yourself. I work with systems with many dozens of colocated machines. Switching ISPs would require physically moving or replacing them, transitioning services, and so on. Hours or days of downtime, tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, weeks of work for several admins.
So smarthost your mail with an ISP that doesn't suck.
I hope you have a huge advisory to your customers that states very clearly that you use a blacklist which has a very high number of false positives, due to their neanderthal mentality of 'extreme collateral damage.'
It's not a neanderthal mentality - it's a boycott. If you can think of a better way to get ISP's to boot their spammers, we'd all like to hear it.
Actually, they pretty much always start with one. If complaints get dealt with, it goes away and nobody hears about it. It's when complaints are ignored and the netblock expands that people start bitching, which is exactly how it's supposed to work.
Even with a very cunning driver (whether computer or human) you need some margin in front of and behind the car. But if you could just rotate all four wheels to point in the same direction you could easily get in and out of spaces no bigger than the car. This kind of four-wheel steering might be useful for overtaking and swerving as well.
Of course, this is only a good idea if everyone has four wheel steering - Otherwise, the poor sucker without it who comes back to find cars an inch off the front and rear of his bumper is going to be kinda pissed.
And it's not really that hard, if you read the Apt-Howto to maintain a mixed distribution - only upgrading those packages you need, while using stable for the rest.
at $0.99 a track, after the credit card companies and the record industry receive their cut, let's be honest, the iTMS isn't exactly yielding huge dividends on its own merits
Actually, I believe it's been previously reported here that _all_ of the money is handed over to ther record companies. It's just a gimmick to sell iPods...
Look, you have to realize someone has to pay the bills (and profits) for these services. You are not going to get unbiased, non-commercial results for free. Forget it. Fortunately most sites clearly tell you what results are paid.
I don't think he's talking about the paid results - Googles are pretty unobtrusive. The really annoying stuff is the stuff in the _unpaid_ search results. Go search for DVD players or something. You'll see what he means.
That is where I get genocidal. He was DIRECTLY responsible for the deaths of MILLIONS for nothing other than his own sense identity.
One entry found for genocide. Main Entry: genocide Pronunciation: 'je-n&-"sId Function: noun Date: 1944 : the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group
Then I would suggest you get yourself a dictionary. Nothing Napoleon did was for the systematic annihilation of anybody.
Nice point. That's why conservatives HATE college profs. They teach people to think independently.
Of course, liberals also have their share of "group thinkers" (political correctness) and that's wrong to.
Given how much of the "Pollitical Correctness" movement came off of American Campuses, what I think you mean to say is "Thats why conservatives HATE college profs. They're a bastion of liberal groupthink, teaching students to think just like they do, or fail"
Of course, the same argument can be made for many things. I have the same feeling about American cars... you're likely to have a Ford or GM last 5 years.
If your cars only last for five years and you consider anything else an "exception" you should maybe try changing the oil every so often. Brake pads too, when they start making the squealing sound. Heck, go all out and do the tires to every 50,000 miles or so. Frankly, unless you're putting on over 40,000 a year or can't be bothered with proper maintenance, pretty much any American can be expected to last quite a bit longer than that. Many of them have partial warantees to 5 years/100000 miles these days...
And I'm sure you're of the opinion that the improving economy following Bush's tax cut is just a coincidence, right?
I don't know about him, but I certainly am - I feel the tax cut will in the long run hurt the economy as increased demand for money causes interest rates the rise. The economy would have come back without the tax cut - it's cyclical, and always has been. Bush didn't have jack to do with it. Not to mention the total screwing we're all going to get when the baby-boomers retire and the government has to start paying for their retirements...
Why the hell did a sarcastic snipe from a PC-drone that believes we all have the exact same level of ability in everything get modded to 5:Insightful???
People differ in ability by a HUGE margin. Pretending otherwise wastes time.
Because it's a common sentiment, and largely a correct one? Yes, people differ hugely in ability, but that doesn't excuse them from the rules. The problem is that those who are least competent are also the least capable of judging their competency. So you get what I used to deal with every day on the way to work - people who think they're just great drivers, so they have no problem talking on their cell phone while piloting their SUV in bumper-to-bumper traffic at 70 mph. Or what I see every night here at college - people who think _they_ can drive safely when they're drunk, cause they're big tough men and they can handle their liquor. You don't get to arbitrarily exempt yourself from the rules because _you_ think you can handle it.
While I do believe I overlooked the water loss, I don't believe it could be all water.
Why not? A siginificant portion of garbage is food waste and the like. This material tends to be > 50% water, so I see no reason the garbage as a whole couldn't be easily 50% water. Also, theres likely some rounding involved in going from 2 tons to 1. Like maybe two to 1.2, but1 sounded better.
While the United States Constitution allows Congress to enact copyright laws, it doesn't require Congress to do so. Copyright could be repealed, and file sharing made legal tomorrow if you could just get the votes in Congress to do so.
In theory perhaps, but there are some difficult international treaty obligations there...
Actually, you can put just about any chip into an FPGA. I know that nVidia prototypes their newest graphics chips using FPGA's. You only need custom fab if you're on the cutting edge, or if you are doing a large run (cheaper)
While this is true, large FPGA's get very expensive, very, very fast.

Nope, clean cut all the way. Several times during the summer, so not even wearing my trenchcoat.
at least that's how it seems.
I'm white as the snow surrounding this building and I've been searched in at least one airport every time I've flown for the last two years.
And it's not really that hard, if you read the Apt-Howto to maintain a mixed distribution - only upgrading those packages you need, while using stable for the rest.
Unless you want to factor in things like power consumption....
A dodge employed by the mafia in the past was to have the wives call each other and talk for a bit first...
I'm not sure why. Everyone here has guns, and we've got no shortage of meth-heads.
Actually, I believe it's been previously reported here that _all_ of the money is handed over to ther record companies. It's just a gimmick to sell iPods...

Egotistical I'll buy, but can we get a cite on genocidal?

Not really true, just a different set involving the frieght hauling railroads that own the tracks.
You do realize the Japanese Economy has been in the crapper for about the last 10 years or so, right?
