  1. There is some evidence on Tufts Expelled a Student For Grade Hacking. She Claims Innocence (techcrunch.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

The fact her grades were changed (along with others) is evidence. Her laptop *was* used for some of this hacking, even she is not denying this.

I honestly don't know to believe her or not; lots of the alibi material also could be rigged.

At the very least there should be an investigation that would let her return if they find someone else did it. But to say there is no evidence, is really going too far the other way.

  2. Do you hear yourself??? on Amazon's Charity 'AmazonSmile' Funds Anti-Vaccine Groups (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1, Insightful

Bullshit, they could remove it from the options of their system on a whim.

Holy shit are you even listening to your own words.

Yes they could remove anything "on a whim". So maybe someone who works there decides to remove pro-gay charities "on a whim". Or a charity giving aid to refugees...

Once you start doing things "on a whim" it ends badly for everyone.

What is you damage that you even care if these groups get money? Don't like it, contribute or form a pro-vaccination group and get out the word! Don't start blocking out everything you personally find wrong or crazy for anyone else to view.

  3. How does Apple ignore e-waste? on Apple Is Now Forcing Its Suppliers to Go 'Green' (afr.com) · · Score: 5, Informative

E-waste is a real thing, but they completely ignore this

How on earth can you claim this?

Not only does Apple accept every product for free for recycling or resale (they will give you some credit if they can sell it again), Apple also carefully recycles each item themselves to extract as much material as possible.

In fact Apple has gone so far (in a keynote last year) as to say a stated goal is to eliminate the need for raw materials, and get all of the material they need for new devices from recycled ones!

Apple is the model for how all companies should behave with regards to e-waste.

  4. Why would they care? on Will A No-Deal Brexit Void 340,000 British-Owned .EU Domains? (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Who honestly would care if a .EU domain was lost?

In fact you could then derive some benefit by being able to write off the expense of the domain as a loss.

That's performing a lot better than the value of having a domain that ends with .eu, which not one person in the history of the internet has typed on purpose.

Find a single company who has a .EU domain not backed by other more common domains like .com. Just one.

  5. Better on Will A No-Deal Brexit Void 340,000 British-Owned .EU Domains? (theguardian.com) · · Score: 2, Insightful

None of that will happen, what will happen is that the UK being free of stupid EU rules and regulations will become a vast economic powerhouse where people go for things the EU will not allow... a giant grey market wonderland of prosperity.

Stick that in your pipe of gloom and smoke it.

Nice find... back in 2010, when most people were still using spinning discs with platters.

Not much recording going on with an SSD stick.

Another great reason to switch to SSD if you've not already though!

A dedicated spy group could probably do really well by selling cheap external enclosures that modified common drives inserted with this hack, then had a cellular data feed built in to transmit real-time audio to whoever on demand.

  7. The thing about the robot bar was, you could save a custom drink mix and come back to it later. It was also pretty fast at mixing the drinks, and since you could adjust the amount of different parts of your drink you could get it just the strength you liked after a try or two.

So it wasn't just about the show, the actual quality of the resulting mix was nice, especially in that once you hit on a mix you liked you got the same thing every time, and the robot didn't look at you funny for wanting a lot of lime slices added.

  8. Robots can be fun on MGM Considers Replacing Workers With Robots In Its Las Vegas Strip Properties (vegasslotsonline.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

I was on a cruise recently that had a robot bar - it was pretty well designed, as you used a tablet o order whatever kind of drink you wanted out of the different bottles of spirits and non-alcoholic drinks it had... it was pretty well designed, and built to be "showy" if you will as it prepared drinks. It was one of the more interesting things on the ship...

  9. Manning will always be 10+ times the man Kendall ever was, or ever will be

Indeed, Manning is 10+ times the man of all the Slashdot posters combined... that's is why I give deference to her pronoun; she has earned respect.

She saw a moral choice that would impact her greatly, and she chose to risk those consequences. I think she really botched how she did it (revealing some things she should not have), but by and large it was better for people to know what she, and Wikileaks, have revealed... always err on the side of transparency.

Little known fact, that Tesla that got sent to Mars with the empty suit in the drivers seat... that wasn't empty, it was someone who got in to test to see if a suited astronaut would fit and fell asleep.

  11. It is contrary to public policy to sell children in return for free services

I think it's very telling that both under a strident Democratic administration, and now a Republican one, that the investigation and hatred for Wikileaks is exactly the same. This is why I often maintain there is really very little difference between the two parties...

I do feel sorry for Manning though, sending her to jail and not even letting her be confined to home is bullshit. As Wikileaks has said on Twitter, this is simply an effort to coerce Manning to testify. I think it's sad they can get away with this.

Would just be nice for any serious Disney fan to really see EVERYTHING they produced at the highest level of quality.

It will be really interesting to see what traction Disney gets with this channel. I think it may do OK just from the base of all the families that love Disney channel and kids movies. But it also seems wrong to stick Deadpool and other more adult Marvel stuff behind this paywall that few fans are going to find worth paying for.

  17. If it ain't broke don't break it on Elizabeth Warren Calls To Break Up Facebook, Google, and Amazon · · Score: 1

No complaints about Apple and their walled-garden?

No, because there are easy alternatives - you can always get an Android phone, perhaps you've heard of them?

In no way in any space is Apple a monopoly, there are always other options - and the world would be poorer within a choice as distinct as Apple from other offerings.

The ones under discussion - Google, Facebook, Amazon, each have rather more a lock on what they do - although I don't see really how you can "break them up". What would that really mean for each of them? Google already self-broke into search and Alphabet. Facebook is just a big ball of yarn you can't really unravel. Amazon, what would you break off that could really survive by itself? Grocery stores?? H AH AH AHAH AHA HA. No.

  18. The Rich once again benefit from the Poor... on Philadelphia Bans Cashless Stores (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

I'm all for this move, but a funny side effect this has is supporting the ability of rich people to remain anonymous by using cash for transactions they do not want others to know about.

If all stores were allowed to go cashless, it would be harder and harder to hide any transaction from everyone - stores on the lower end the spectrum are just the edge of that slippery slope.

So I applaud citied working at keeping the economy free from meddling for those that care to expend effort.

  19. I agree it falls short on desktop, but the original statement was that it does not work which is flat-out wrong.

It's kind of humorous that Javascript seems to be making more headway with desktop apps via Electron than Java did... despite similar ways of falling short.

It almost makes you wonder if maybe Java desktop apps should be revived.

  20. I know of no new development done on java applications

Come on, Java server development is still going strong

I mean, some companies are still using Cobol, and you think Java is going anywhere?

Not to mention not all Android developers have moved to Kotlin, that is a many year process - in the meantime there is a ton of Android Java code, and even new apps being developed in Java until widespread Kotlin expertise ramps up.

"write once, run everywhere". fucking pack of lies that is.

Why? That actually worked well. In the past I worked on desktop Java apps that I could run across various systems (and still work today).

When I moved to server development, we would sometimes shift between systems like Solaris and Linux or some BSD variants, but while we may have had to tune the VM we did not change the code...

  21. Apple manufactured hundreds of millions of smartphones without headphone jacks, knowing that consumers would in the end be OK with the choice.
