A few months back I was talking with a woman who was smoking the most interesting cigarette i've ever seen. Evidently she was taking part in a study promoted by non-other then Phillip Morris. What she was smoking looked like a normal cigarette being smoked inside of a small device with a mouthpiece. The device lights the special cigarettes NOT from the top but from the sides and somehow releases the nicotene without the smoke. It was true, there was absolutly no smoke coming from it whatsoever. I asked her if they still hit you like normal cigarettes and she claimed they did. The device also contained a small chip that calculated the amount of nicotene the person released and at what intervals in order to monitor their smoking habits.
The market niche for these devices is to promote "healthy smokers". She claimed after using it she smoked less and less until she hardly had the need for a cigarette at all. It makes me question why Phillip Morris would be involved however.
I wonder when/if they'll start selling these on the market? I think it's a better idea then nicotene free cigarettes. Smoke is what causes the cancer, the bad breath, and the stinky hair and clothes, not nicotene.
Is this an argument or just an excuse to flaunt your amazing will-power to withstand against peer-pressure?
For your information there are plenty of "nice jobs" that do NOT drugtest. In fact, more employers are relizing that drug testing potential employees is a waste of company resources.
1) The ``drug epidemic'' does not pose the huge threat to public health and safety that some many claim.
2) Currently legal drugs cause more problems than illicit drugs.
3) Even if it were desirable to address casual drug use as a problem, urinalysis is not the way to do it.

Yes, I see it has an option to email you when it's finished...but how does that prevent someone from stealing your laundry when you walk out? If you don't want your shirts stolen, your better off waiting with them.
There is no scientific evidence that ultrasonic can/will repel pests. We MIGHT be able to say in the least that some pests are temporarly annoyed, however they easily adjust.
To say wearable computers will never take off because "a typical user is happy with 56k, etc" is ridiculous. This thing is ugly and obtrusive, and most likely the latter will still be true after it's new design. A completly undetectable device embedded in something such as sunglasses would be preferable.
Anyone remember when Maxtor decided to switch from FreeBSD to WinNT? Do the reasons Maxtor switched have any basis towards the creation of a new NAS system? My thought on it was microsoft made a deal with Maxtor.
I was watching a behind the scenes look at shrek ( I believe it was on techtv). It was a really in depth look at the design and creation of the movie, in a technical aspect. According to one of the developers the princess originally looked "too real" and they actually made her look at little more cartoony. So it wasn't because the technology isn't there, it just wasn't appropriate to have absolute realistic persons in a cartoon.

Shared Source?

According to the microsoft webpage there number 1 element for the Shared Source model is:
1.Community: A strong support community of developers.
Sorry, but what a crock of shit. It sounds like they want to take some of the ideals of the OSS and FSF to increase their image to developers. A good example is that this page is not on their developer page, but on there business page. It's good that they are showing some source finally (they probably did a grep -r/mscode/* GNU) however, I think there just trying to reap the benifits of OSS.
The only statement that cannot be questioned, is that every statement can be questioned.
When a new technology emerges there are a few given circumstances, especially with such a large userbase.
First of all there a lot of companies who want to be leaders of emerging technologies. So given that theres going to be to be a race to create the standard. However, keep in mind its not always the best product that survives.
This reminds me of BetaMAX and VHS, personally I think Beta's are the shit! However, they seemed to fade away pretty quick. Why did VHS survive over beta? Maybe that should be kept in mind.

He probably could never imagine his article would be available on a worldwide network of computers, and i'm damn sure he couldn't predict the server it's posted on would be slashdotted.

I love the idea of any extensions or utilities
to improve security or speed, however I dont think there can ever be a one step solution to either of these issues.
I'm currently working on a project that runs on an embedded linux system and after trying to boost security/speed i've come to the conclusion that the only way to be completly anal retentive about it is to know exactly how everything on the system runs, and then removing/modifying whatever is not needed.
Sorry if this is a bit offtopic but i'm just trying to stress that it's impossible to take a task such security and place it into the hands of an idiot with a powerful program. Linux users shouldn't think advancements like this will ever eliminate a saavy administrator. Props to NAI for developing a nice set of extensions as well.

Although I dont object fining spammers or even hurling them to a fiery death, I think theres a better solution. Why not concentrate on stopping spam at service provider level. What I mean is that more service providers should focus their energy on upgrading their SMTP servers. There has been some great software written. Check out http://www.mail-abuse.org. I think this would be a safer first step.

Work is primarily being done by the development community and the major Linux distributions including Caldera/SCO, Debian, Mandrake, Red Hat,SuSE, and Trubolinux. Further contributions have come from IBM, Intel,Linuxcare, Metro Link, VA and others.
Hmm, well it seems as though a few companies have done some development, however who do you think will be the first to adopt it into their base distrobution? What also comes to mind is package support. Right now it is said that it hasn't selected a package format but eludes to RPM. Does this mean that when others adopt the standard they will have/like to switch to RPM?
The only statement that cannot be questioned, is that every statement can be questioned.
It's not about who has a better project. It's about having an idea and bringing it to life yourself, instead of paying someone else to do it. It's like saying "Kernighan and Ritchie created C...big freaking whoop, Neal Armstrong walked on the moon!"
Why does a dog lick his balls?
Stop being such a fucking nice guy to these girls. They all WANT nice guys, but they have sex with assholes. Learn this and have fun in High School!
Imagine how much of a jack-ass you'd like riding one these things.
If they could make a hover wheelchair like Dr. Xavier from the X-men, then THAT my friends, would be marketable.
Slightly off-topic...

I've often heard the argument that Beta lost the race because they refused to allow pornography distributed on their tapes.
Is there any truth in this?
What about a spell checker?

I was curious about the same thing.
A trojan could do this, but that would first require him to send the trojan and the user to run it. Thats way too much work.
He could be exploiting some type of remote execution bug, but that would be extremely platform dependant.
Another point is that this requires an IP address as opposed to an e-mail address. How is he going to harvest these addresses? Scanning?
The more I think about it, I can't see any legal way of doing it. He's going to get his ass busted thinking these laws are as lax as spam.
