I'm not so sure they did. I think OLPC did a fine job of killing themselves.. I _TRIED_ to get one when I first heard about it. I thought it would be neet to have one and figured they would be readily available to anyone that wanted one, after all, mass production was the key..

This was before they had even produced one. So I waited.. Then they came up with the G1G1 idea. I didn't mind having to pay for 2. At $100 a pop, its not such a bad thing.

Then the price was revised. Not $100 each, $300 for the pair.. So that was AU$600+ for me.. Getting a little high for a novelty.. But I thought at least i'll be giving one to some needy kids.. Then I was told I could get one because i was outside the US.. WTF?!

Then they stuck XP on it and I gave up.. By then the eeepc had come out locally and the 10" one was only a few months off.. So now I have a much better machine for around AU$100 less than OLPC wanted to charge me.. Sure, some snotty nosed little brat in some far off land cant sell the one he missed out on for smack.. And I didn't have to jump through any stupid hoops.

Not joining a player corp in eve is like buying a car without any wheels. I'm sure it'll look nice and not get the paint scratched, but its pretty useless. Player corps in eve are about the only way to get anything even remotely meaningful done and not get blown up a bajillion times while doing it.

Although I pretty much agree with everything else. 5 years ago I used to see hundres of web pages that worked in IE but not the more standards complient Firefox, now I'm seeing it swing the other way.

    2) (The first one). Being in the position where im about to do a server rollout using hyper-v, ive done quite a bit of research on it. It doesnt look to bad, except it needs some better tools badly, and needs a light footprint like VMware (ie, doesnt require you to install windows first). A nice lean OS to run it it would also be good..

    2) (The second one). While I agree that xbox live will become MS's new cash cow, I also believe that downloaded and/or streaming movies is still a long way off. There is still to large a market that doesnt have or cant get a fast enough net connection to make it worth it. This will change, but not for a long time. (read 20+ years)

    3) There are other good IDEs out there, but yes, Visual Studio will stay around for a long time yet.

    4) Microsoft R&D will continue to do what Microsoft R&D does, buy other companies that have developed something really cool and combine that technology with other things they have bought that were really cool. This will do what it always has, ie, produse some really bad ideas and some really good ones. Hopefully for MS the really good ones turn out to be money makers.

  15. A quick family survey on Mobile Phone Users Struggle With Hardware Adoption · · Score: 1

I've been reading most of the comments and a lot of people are blaming the carriers for locking the phones down. I'm not an American and Australian carriers are forced to not lock the phones down quite so much, so I get to see what features people use when they actually CAN use them. Lets take my family as an example.

Me - I use almost of all of the features of my phone except the camera and MP3 player. I have a nice little 7MP happy snap digital camera that is actually smaller than my phone permanently in my backpack. I do however use the browser from time to time. I use the wifi and bluetooth (mostly to get my laptop online). I use its email sync.. Lets just say I use a lot of features and im happy with it.

Brother - My brother uses the phone to make calls and SMS only. Hes not to technical, but can work his way around the interface. I actual got an MMS message from him once to show off his new bike, so he can USE the features, he just doesn't.

Wife - She uses the phone to make calls and SMS as well. Pretty much the same usage pattern as my brother.

Father - My dad had to get the best phone he could. This is the 2nd phone in a row where I have gotten a call from him after 2 weeks complaining that the screen is too small and he cant read it and can I make the text bigger (which I cant). As a result he doesn't use ANY of the features and even has trouble making calls on the phone.

Mother - My mums phone is pretty basic because shes the least technical person I know. She cant even figure out the address book in the phone, but she gets by.

So there we go.. I would say my phone usage is abnormal based on that quick survey, and even I don't use the camera.

Internet access providers do not pay per gigabyte transferred. Neither do hosting providers, not in Europe, not elsewhere. Actually, thats not strictly true.. I have worked for a few ISP's in Australia, and for ADSL there are 2 costs involved.

Peering/interstate/international bandwidth is charged to an ISP in Mbps, so in this case your right, they don't pay for an actual meg of data but they do pay for how much they want transported at one time. ADSL tail (though Telstra, the only people that can wholesale ADSL in the country) IS charged per MB of data, but at a very small amount.

ISPs in Australia charge per MB because they cant possibly hope to cover all their user bandwidth and NOT charge the end customer thousands of dollars a month. Limiting a customer to say 20-40GB a month means they wont suddenly decide to download the interwebs and hog a piece of the ISPs total bandwidth.
