    BBC writers need to learn the meaning of "literal" - they say "Scheissbude" is literally "Crap Booth," but folks, "Scheiss" isn't crap. It's shit. I can understand them not wanting to use the literal translation, but why say it's literal? Why not just it's translated?

    As I'm sure many are aware, Microsoft firmly believes in the "you get what you pay for" theory. Hotmail sucks, and I'm sure the people who handle termination of accounts accused of sending spam are not very well-paid or well-qualified to understand most concepts of email (as is the case with most tech support, especially free tech support).

    I have a hotmail account, but it only exists for those times when I have to give an email address to a company I don't trust. If that account gets shut down, I don't really care. I have plenty of other accounts where I can get spam from.

    Well, I only use Linux because everything about it is better than that BSOD OS, and they better make a free open-source version for Linux or else I'm going to continue to not buy any more CD's!

    And I'm not surprised that Howard Carmack is in Buffalo. There isn't much to do there unless you like cold weather and hanging out at Wal-Mart. At least he had a hobby!

    You can only send 60 MB in an hour with a T1? That's the slowest T1 I've ever seen. It looks to me like you coud transfer a terabyte in about 63 days with a 1.544Mb connection. That would be roughly 694.8 MB in an hour. Mods, if the math is blatantly wrong, it may not be worthy of being a plus-5.

    mathmatician, fantasticly, ferther, mathmaticians, refrence, becouse (seven times), insperation, challange, sighting (new use for existing word), impossable, sitation (two times), sitations (two times), coinned (two times), recomended, presumming, sereously, doupt, slanguage, clame
    Now I know Slashdot isn't exactly a haven for proper spelling, but COME ON! You're not even trying. I would be suspicicous that you're actively trying to misspell as many words as possible (unless this isn't your primary language).

    I had (and still have, actually) an accidental top result for "Peter Griffin" in the image search. I never linked to or used the image outside a photoshop contest, and it wasn't even that good - it was the cartoon character Peter Griffin (from Family Guy) with Merv Griffin's face.

    After I found out about my top placement, I started watching my log files and I was surprised to see how many messageboards have linked the image. Most of the image linking was pointless - just somebody found the image and linked directly to it, with no explanation of why it was applicable. Weird.

    Personally I think this and many other problems would go away if the voting system was ported to slashcode. And every voter was given five moderator points to spend on the candidates.

    The one with the highest score wins. And we'd be able to use our mod points to explain why we're voting for or against somebody. This candidate's funny. This one's informative. That one's insightful. This one loser is a troll, and that guy's whole campaign is just flamebait.

    Wouldn't that be more fun?

    Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to convert minutes to hours:minutes format with it...
    Quick and dirty, but it will get the job done (assume m=number of minutes):

    if (n < 10) { print "0" }
    print n
    I haven't used a TI programmable calculator in 8 years or so, but if you can convert my pseudo-syntax to the correct syntax, that will display it for you. Considering the processing limitations of these calculators, I'd recommend leaving the value in minutes and calling this proc when you need to display it...

    I've found that the way I improvise has a lot to do with what I listen to on the way to a gig. This was most wonderfully illustrated one day when I was listening to some really abstract jazz (Coltrane, Sun Ra, Sam Rivers) before playing a gig that was predominantly rock and blues. I had a lot of fun playing my solos that night, but the audience didn't want to hear whole-tone scales and half-step transpositions during a Rolling Stones song.

    The moral of the story - get your head into the style you'll be playing.

    Two thumbs way down to Sony for implementing it tied to DRM and content expiration. Thanks for nothing, Sony.
    It's stupid moves like this that put the ??? in step two. I'll be waiting for the next generation, the one that not only allows us to keep the documents we purchase, but also includes some sort of nice simple way to put our own documents on these things - something like a printer driver, ala Adobe Distiller.

    This version seems to be geared towards giving us the ability to read what the big media people have to say. Great, it's about time we heard their story.

    And what a shame, because the technology really does look cool.

    You give your password to your wireless provider over the phone? What happened to not giving your passwords to anyone?
    That's why I wince when they ask for it. Unfortunately, some systems are not built well, and you don't always have a choice. As much as I hate it, I have had to do it in the past (with Sprint) in order to take care of some things that couldn't be handled via the web and I didn't want to go with the postal service for it.

    I don't understand why people have a problem with passwords. Are geeks brains really wired so differently to "non-geeks"?
    You bet they are. The non-geek brain usually assumes they will tell somebody their password at some point (for convenience most likely) so they tend to choose something that is representative of their lives - like the name of a son or daughter, pet, or an anniversary date. Some people use the password as an ego boost, like the name of an author or classical composer. When they type in that password, they feel good about themselves for being "associated" with such greatness, even though that connection wouldn't even exist if they hadn't chosen to create it.

    It sounds funny to the geek, who prides himself on the security of his passwords and winces every time his wireless provider asks him to say his password over the phone. h-d-asterisk--

    "Asterisk?"

    Yeah, hit shift-8. h-d-asterisk-captial-l-capital-v-lowercase-b-close -parenthesis. You see, we geeks are nightmares for those telemarketers.
