    Anti-competitive? Perhaps you should look at cars from Eastern Europe before you start suggesting the design of the modern car is somehow inherently 'anti-competitive'. It is precisely because of such fierce competition between manufacturers that you are not stuck with an old piece of shit that won't start on a cold morning and can go 10000+ miles between servicing.

    Shoddy mod's to vehicles can be downright dangerous, and I sure as hell don't want some dumb fucker heading towards me at 100mph 'cos he didn't quite get the throttle response right in his bodged add-on and now it won't stop...

    Bugger off and play with your Meccano.

    Despite the duck hunters above, this really is a shame for the GNU/Linux community. Progeny was one of the better Debian distro 'packagers' and will be sorely missed by many I'm sure.

    Unfortunately, very few can 'buck the market' especially when dealing in a marketplace where the buyers really do want 'something for nothing' (and I'm not excluding myself).

    Hopefully this isn't just yet another nail in the coffin for Debian...

    Whenever I read that government X wants to ban Y from the internet or fine provider Z for a users web page/chat room comments I nearly fall off my sofa laughing. Maybe they don't see how ludicrous their statements would seem if the subtituted 'malicious or offensive voice content' carried over the 'public telephony system' for any of the statements they make about the internet.

    Or perhaps they do/ think it would be sensible to prosecute Cable and Wireless or British Telecom for every crank call made from a payphone or mobile but just haven't got round to drafting the legislation yet.

    Or, more credibly, they have no real understanding of the communications industry whatsoever.

    Hey - maybe someone in the US should prosecute the mail service for delivering Anthrax. It would make just as much sense.

    I would wholeheartedly agree, but I would add that I don't think that anyone's personality is ever 'fixed'. Cos if it is, maybe we should throw away the key when we lock anyone up.

    Kids are, however, very susceptible to peer pressure and (just about any) external influences, especially those we wish they'd ignore....The permanence of the effects of these influences is another debate.Mind you, Kipling once wrote 'Give me a boy until he is 7 and I shall give you the man.'

    Perhaps he was onto something.

    Somehow I still can't quite bring myself to actually walk into a bookstore and buy one of these book. I always thought buying Discworld novels got me enough sideways glances (and hey, that's a lot of glances over the years), but I think I'd be looking sideways at myself if a passed a mirror after buying an HP book

    Perhaps it's just that quiet British reserve that prevents me, or maybe I just can't be bothered to find out for myself (sad, pathetic, oh-so-timid victim of self-image).

    And I won't watch the film either. Really. No, honestly.

    Certainly opens a few possible 'revenue opportunities' for those in the advertising sector. Whether it will catch on is another matter. From a commercial standpoint it's great to advertise to those most likely to buy from you (and if they are nearby, so much the better).

    However it's going to be difficult to sell advertising space to reach, lets say, the one unfortunate bastard in the whole state who has bought Onstar and happens to pass by everyday as he leaves his house...

    And anyway, as a private individual, I abhor the idea of yet more corporate 'throat-stuffing' as I go about my daily business.

    True, but when was the last time anyone here actually backed up ALL the useless crap on their HDD.

    CDR is OK(ish), but 120GB is approx 170 CDRs and that's going to take a little while to burn...unless you buy an LTO drive autoloader of course and pay 10 times as much as for the cheap hard drive ...

    Or is everyone going own the RAID route with the new cheap IDE RAID mobo's available? Answers on a postcard please.
