So there are two observations: people have an increasing number of on-line buddies and a decreasing number of off-line real friends. But who can be sure that the former is causing the latter? Statistics is full of this mistake.
OK, lets throw in a third phenomenon, people are more mobile over larger distances. Who is still living in the same city, country or even continent he grew up? Living far away from your old friends and relatives definitely stimulates the use of on-line communication. And each time building a new circle of off-line friends is a tough thing to do.
I'm not saying that people becoming more global is what causes the shift from off-line to on-line friends, but it's just an example to show that assuming a direct cause between two observations is often way too simple.
the point of illegal immigrants is that you don't know they're here
That can be easily solved!! Just put an RFID tag in all(!!) legal US citizens and then you know that anybody that doesn't do BLEEP must be an illegal.:-) Also much better for Verisign shareholder value than just tagging those few immigrants....
It's definitely not a stretch, because it was exactly the first association I had when I read the headings of this/. post. What's the difference between RFID chips and numbered tatoos on a wrist.
Unfortunately on Linux, the Editor should be vi...
If you go the non-IDE route, I still think vi is not the way to go. I (have to) use it all the time when sys-admin-ing systems, but for developers there is no reason not to use something like gedit, nedit, etc. Giving them vi is a guarantee for your students to hate sw development.
And personally I would spend one lesson on CLI based compiling and linking of 'hello world', to show what happens under the water of an IDE and then I would quickly move on to something like Netbeans.
The problem with these potential yak-fests by seatmates and by nearby or loud passengers is being unable to escape from them.
Time to reintroduce the old smoking section in the back of the plane. This time not for smokers, but for yakkers. However, I do remember how I always would get a seat in the last row before the smoking section.
Now back to reality, no way would Apple and Sun ever be able to co-own something.
But think of it this way: Schwartz started as a NextStep software shop. And who was the founder of NeXT..... there you are. OK, all pure speculation of course.
I must admit I'm biased, I still own my NextStation Color and an app bought from Lighthouse Design.
If analists know so well how to run a company, how come they are still analists and not CEO of either a startup or a mature company? So, better take their words with a a grain of salt.
I fully agree with the point you make, but there are exceptions. Like my current notebook (Fujitsu P7010D) which has only a 10.5 inch (wide)screen, but still with 1280x768 pixels. I can tell you, those pixels ar pretty small!! A nice side effect of higher pixel resolutions is also that when you have a dead pixel, it becomes much less visible. In my case I've one blue pixel constantly on. My dealer was willing to replace the screen, but I left it as it is. You simply don't see it.
OK, we can now have all these "my support sucked" stories, but let's be fair, life is simple. You either go for the lowest price and then expect the vendor to solve all your problems, including those caused by PEBKEC. But if you don't want that, there are two solutions: 1) you pay a little more and buy from a vendor who's not shaving every penny off, or 2) know what you're doing, in which case you will probably buy white box and select your own major brand (OEM:-) parts.
If you're in the latter category, you will spend the same (probably a little more) than buying a Dell and you have ZERO support, but you're the type who is happy with that. If you're not the type that can solve his/her own problems, then go for a brand that has enough margin (and is more expensive) that it can give you real support. Nothing new with buying computers: You get what you pay for and YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM BOTH....
The screen on the left has my list of e-mails. On the center screen is usually the specific e-mail I'm reading and responding to. And my browser is on the right-hand screen.
I guess the laptop/tablet on the photo at the bottom is the domain of Clippy.....
There is this cartoon about an endless row of cars in a traffic jam, where one guy sticks his head out of the window and shouts "I count to three and then we will all go driving 80 miles".
You start to wonder if it would be possible to get all people that are offered a "settlement" by RIAA to do similar and say all at the same time "fuck you, no settlement, we will take it to court". That would problaby make the impact needed (press, politicians, etc) to stop this lunacy. So, wouldn't it be nice if 'boarder8925' is the girl that "sticks her head out of the window".
Was this an issue of 'politically correctness' or were the people who initiated this new TLD too prudish that they didn't want to call the beast by it's name: "dot-sex". "Dot-Ex-Ex-Ex" seems to express too much "Dot-No-No-No", which is of course not the thing that will encourage porn-producers to move over to a new TLD.
Those little blue "flip-overs" Walmart makes its staff to wear, can hardly be called a uniform. It's IMHO a disgrace to force your employees to wear something so ugly and cheap. But those are the two Walmart keywords, so it is probably fitting (the words, not the uniforms:).
My GoDaddy experience is similar. I didn't select it myself, but someone I helped with his web-site had chosen them. IMO it sucked, but he liked it because it was cheap.
It is clear why GoDaddy went MS, the same slogans apply: "friends don't let friends use Windows servers" is easily transformed into "friends don't let friends host their site at GoDaddy".
The similarity doesn't stop there, if it is friends/family using Windows PCs or others hosting at GoDaddy, they just don't want to know that anything else exists. And even while they complain for hours about the lousy support they get, they don't make the switch.
Now we all know Google has many datacenters, and you start to wonder if they run different versions of their software. Because I fully believe you, when you say 9440 without quotes, but I do get 819 without quotes and 735 with. And then this other guy gets 819 _with_ quotes. It seems that different Google servers have different idea's about boolean logic.

It seems I'm getting to the Canadian google server, even when the URL is google.com. But google.ca has the same 72.14.207.99 IP address.
I emigrated from Holland to Canada and my surname is in Holland not rare but also not that common, people in Canada even can't pronounce it. I'm here "the guy with only a first name".:-) So, I get medical benefits from my new employer and put in my first claim for dental care. So far, so good. The cheque I get from the insurance company however, has the wrong company name on it. I give them a call and it seems some administrative hickup. Long story short, they had already another customer with the same first and last name, then the same birthdate (rare, but can happen) and then weirdest of all the same year of birth. Oh, and his wife had the same initials as my wife.....
I, on the other hand, have a comparitively significant web presence and a unique name. I get over 9,000 hits on Google [google.com]
Talking about hyping resumes:-). Don't know which google you are using, but when I simply click your link, it's only 819 hits. And when adding quotes around your name --there's plenty of Joe's out there-- it goes back to 735.
And, sometimes very important, the variant: "If you can't fix it, don't break it!" :)
Plenty of colors available!! But I missed yellow. And if it's granite, how do you drill those "swiss" holes? Like this. :-)

I'm also in Canada and I got a 404. So probably you go through some (corporate ??) proxy in the US.
Not so true, whenever I buy^h^h^hbuild a new PC, my harddisk is normally empty.... :)

Swimming can be even cheaper as long as you're not using a wetsuit, ...
:-)
Swimming can be really inexpensive, especially if you forget about the swimsuit !!

Hey buddy, it's Saturday. There is no boss today, or did your mum look over your shoulder and was she shocked. :)

There is an official term for that: "prior art"... :-)
