  1. It's not devs, it's FUD mongers on Devs Flay Microsoft For Withholding Windows 8.1 RTM · · Score: -1

The people complaining are not Microsoft fans. Let's be honest, they had no intention of writing apps for Windows 8.1. They just wanted to get their hands on the final bits early so they could raise fear, uncertainty and doubt before the general public saw the final product in hopes of thwarting MS again. I think MS is doing the right thing by releasing to everyone at the same time.

Fresh fruits & veggies, whole grains, no smoking or chewing tobacco, eating meat sparingly, one by one all of the health guidelines outlined by the LDS Church in the 1800's have been adopted by modern health advocates. Finally the ban on coffee joins the list.

  4. It needs a low-price mini variant on 3 Reasons Why Microsoft Needs 3 Surface Tablets · · Score: 0

To compete with cheap Android tablets they need to release a $199 mini tablet. Some Xbox branding would help with this product. To compete with the iPad they need a new RT variant with upgraded V2 specs. To compete with full tablets, netbooks and laptops they need an updated Pro model with V2 specs.

  8. They have been on Nokia: Microsoft Must Evolve To Make Windows Phone a Success · · Score: 0

I think Microsoft has been evolving for a few years now. It started with Silverlight and spread to Asp.Net and even to Windows Phone. They now embrace open source software and even make some of their own projects open. They are in the process of accelerating their release cycles (something that the Silverlight team did from day one). They are adapting to changing conditions and that includes WindowsPhone.

  9. Re:Who has the biggest kitchen sink? on Love and Hate For Java 8 · · Score: 1

It should advance legitimately instead of just copying other people's stuff. Java 8 is simply playing catch-up to C# at this point. They need to come up with their own ideas and contribute something new.

  10. Re:Seems familar... on Love and Hate For Java 8 · · Score: 2

C# was a fusion of Java, C++ and Delphi. Java 8 is just playing catch-up, sucking in all the innovation that the Microsoft guys have been doing over the past decade. I think you're right that Microsoft is innovating and blazing new trails at a much faster rate than Oracle can copy.

After years of saying java didn't need C# features they go and steal tons of them from C#! Whether it's properties, lambdas, function pointers or async/await, the Java community has always insisted that those features weren't necessary and that Java was no worse for omitting them. Now they go and steal them and put them into their products and everyone will declare them innovative new Java features. Last month it was Apple stealing the "Metro" UI from Windows Phone. Now this. Is Microsoft the ONLY company doing anything innovative anymore?

  12. Where is the mention of the iPad? on Apple Profit Falls 22% But iPhone Sales Are Up · · Score: 1

The real story here isn't about the lower revenue or the increase in iPhone sales. The real story here is the drop in iPad sales. in a time where tablets are supposed to be eating the PC's lunch, the iPad is dropping in sales faster than the PC. Why wasn't that the headline?

  13. DVDs only live for 7 years on Ask Slashdot: Keeping Digital Media After Imaging? · · Score: 1, Insightful

For born-analog content, always keep the original physical copy. You never know when you will need to rescan at a higher quality or when you will discover errors in your digital copy. DVDs are not born analog. In fact the only have a shelf life of around 7 years. You need to get everything off DVDs and make several digital copies of it. You should keep the DVDs as long as possible but eventually you will not be able to read them anymore. Make sure your digital copies of the DVDs are error-free because there will come a time when you cannot go back to the DVDs.

  15. Buy! Buy! on Microsoft Stock Drops 11% In a Day · · Score: 0

  16. Re:ONLY 10,000 apps on Microsoft's Surface RT Was Doomed From Day One · · Score: 0

I totally agree. In fact having too many bad apps in the app store can really worsen the customer experience. You can't find the good apps because 99 out of 100 are somebody's high school project they never completed. I wish someone would make a third-party site that curated apps. I bet there would be less than 2000 or 3000 truly unique, high-quality apps out there.

  17. I love my Surface RT but... on Microsoft's Surface RT Was Doomed From Day One · · Score: 0

I have to agree that going up against the iPad Microsoft should have hit harder with a lower price. Surveys showed that the Surface was more popular with teenagers that the iPad. Yet it was priced way above what a teenager could buy (or what a parent would spend). It really should have been given an introductory price of $299 (or less) then, raised to $350 six months later. Had they done that I think things would have come out much differently.

The built-in memory, performance, concurrency and other profilers don't even exist in Eclipse. The project template system (not to mentionT4 text templates) is also far superior.
