The Nanosecond Buyout was a legendary computerized exchange of stock in 2033 that propelled Damien Knight to the head of Ares Macrotechnology. In the span of 63 seconds using a set of mainframes in Stockholm, Sweden, Knight executed a series of transactions that caused the dissolution of three corporations, two multi-millionaires to lose their fortunes, three other people to become multi-millionaires, and Knight to gain the ownership of 22 percent of Ares. Since then, computerized controls are in place to prevent such blindingly fast stock transactions, preventing an individual from performing the same trick twice.
Lucien Cross gained much from the Nanosecond Buyout, and probably helped orchestrate it (facilitating the server time from Stockholm). It is rumored that Damien Knight had the aid of Dunkelzahn, due to an unusual bequest in Dunkelzahn's Will:
"To Damien Knight, I leave my antique chess set, except for the black king piece. I hope you find another worthy opponent. It was only 60 seconds, old friend, but what a ride!"
Well, 100 or 200 years ago, i'm sure that being a woman in any field meant that they needed to work twice as hard as any other male colleage, since it was not a "womans place" to be doing science, medicine, etc, especially in europe. Today, that's not so much the case, the playing field is more or less equal for all sexes, races, etc, but back in that time, just daring to go against the norm and becoming a woman scientist would be an achievement itself.
All of these platforms suffer from a common drawback: the lack of right click capabilities. I'd really like to find one that lets me use it to build a rich user interface.
(sorry, i'm going to get my asbestos suit right now!)
RoR for PHP Projects

Has anyone tried the CakePHP package? It's supposed to be similar to RoR, but i'm unable to deploy a Ruby based solution at work due to stupid policys (like: everybody knows php, nobody knows ruby... pfff). If not, are there any rails-like project for PHP anyone care to recommend?
I'm a programmer by education and trade, and i've been heavily involved in roleplaying since i was 17 until i was 22 (i'm 24 now). This year i have started studying acting as a hobby and boy, was i surprised. It challenges a totally different part of yourself and i think it makes you understand a lot of things about yourself. I started doing an introductory course on february (and having trouble speaking the first day from the nervousness) to doing a clown course now, which is totally about ridiculling yourself. It's really a leap from what i do daily, which is basically program in various languages, and i totally love it. It's a break from all of the math and logic that ends up taking too much space in my mind. And if you played tabletop RPGs, it won't be that big of a leap (at first). It will help you for all of your life.
Funny... try juggling 9 hours workday plus university (3 hours per day) plus theater classes plus rehearsals plus social life... im lucky if i get 6 hours of sleep during the week. The good part of this, i actually like the pace this sets to my life, i feel that i accomplish a lot more this way than i could ever do if i took it easy. Now, if i could just find some space to go to the gym, i would be a happy man. And, before you ask, no, i don't have a girlfriend.
Here in Argentina there's widespread use of CNG cars, but in the vast majority of the cases, they're regular gas engines that are modded to also take in CNG. We basically have the gas tank (expensive) and the CNG tank (cheap). In the metro areas, CNG is really widespread, here in the capital, all of the taxis use it.
Huh? I don't know what pipe they where smoking, but internet access might be 3u$s/h if it includes a blowjob. On a normal cybercafe it is.3, or.6 u$s/hour, no more.
No no no This is slashdot, so you must phrase that as a cliche.
Here, ill do it for you: Step 1: Take one great show Step 2: Run it a few years Step 3: At the height of it's popularity, cancel it Step 4: ???? Step 5: More profit for Fox Network
After you setup all of the NEEDED apps, you should always do a snapshot of your system and save it elsewhere (think norton ghost), that way, if you have problem with your box, reinstalling it can be a breeze.
Im trying to come up with a cost effective way to unite two PBX using VOIP. My idea is that since most companys here (hint: third world) are not ready cough up the money to go to full-fledged VOIP, they might be willing to pay for a hybrid-solution: a kind of "point-to-point" line using VOIP, which let's them dial an extension on the other PBX.
Am i just talking funny ? or is this idea doable ? i dont know a lot about PBX, but im learning (working tech support for a call center actually), i would like to know how this if this is doable / get some pointer for it...
My basic idea is to get 2 asteriks boxes talking to each other through VOIP. A user on site A dials the VOIP workgroup, it picks up and asks for a remote extension, and then asterisk routes the call.
The idea seems doable, and i think there is a market here for it. But im a little hazy on the hardware requirements for interfacing asterisk with analog lines. This is actually the point where im lost the most.
I read that novel a few years ago, but if im not mistaking, it ended with quite a cliffhanger. In that moment i was eager to read another book so i quickly forgot about it, but do you remember what is the name of the next book in the series?
I remember playing with a friend some 10 years ago the stunt drivers game (or something like that) and building really fast courses for us to get a lot of speed and crash spectacularly... man, there were some funny crashes that way.
I speak bad english, and have only a basic knowledge of physics. That said, here is my thoughts:
We all know that when you go up you store energy. It's basic physics. So, what if you can get a baloon big enough to lift some kind of craft. Let it go really up (Almost no air there, so wind resistance is a much smaller issue), then drop it. After falling for a while it should have tremendous speed (or kinetic energy), level it up and use rockets to get it to go even higher than the balloon. Since the escape velocity is the biggest issue to getting into orbit, this should be a way to shorten that gap significantly.
Would someone with some knowledge of aerodynamic tell me why this isnt possible? Im quite certain there is a big reason why this isnt being done today
This is totally offtopic, but somehow related. I live in Argentina, those MMRPGS really intrigue me, if were to buy a copy and a subscription, would those games work ok for me? is the BW consumption really high? i have cablemodem at my house, but the international bw is not that good.
For the shadowrun fans out there:

Its humorrrrrr

Do you any open source/freeware solution to do just that?

Thanks a lot slashdot.
You got your words confused, it's "Piss" Taster at Budweiser
What's the advantage of a robot like that (which could have a quite hefty price tag) to a cheap mule/horse/real dog/etc to carry equipment?
Google is your friend

Knowing the demographics of slashdot i can say without a shadow of a doubt that that was wishful thinking
What company do we hate the most?:
- Microsoft
- SCO
- Adobe
- Disney
- AOL
- Cowboy Neal only hates the french
(only 6 so far, help!)
But we still hate 'em right?
Check it out, it converts between timezones automagically, respects daylight savings, and all of the fun stuff.
It's really a lifesaver, here is a link DateTime.pm

Is there some similar game now?
