    Every once in a while I see shows about the work being done on cars that drive themselves. They're always just 10 years or so off in the future.

    If we ever do get to that point though, this networking would be very useful. Picture cars driving down the highway like a school of swimming fish. Something jumps into the road? The entire group of cars all move to the right all together.

    I'd hate to be the guy in the "manual" style cars at the time though.

    Then there are those who shutdown via the power button. Then they get those nice filesystem consistency checks at boot time.

    What's wrong with shutting down that way? When I hit the power button, the machine shuts down gracefully. Of course that only works with acpid.

    Encrypted data doesn't compress because it is ALREADY compressed during the encryption process.

    Just compress your random data, and boom, there you go. And you don't have the issue of encrypted garbage being illegal as well like someone else mentioned.

    Version 3 is the current version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). RHEL is different than Red Hat Linux (RHL) which was end of lifed after version 9 to be replaced by Fedora Core.

    Pirated copy? I don't see how their copy could be anything other than licensed.

    If you accept their arguments (who would?), they own the rights to linux and they can use it in any way they'd like.

    If you don't accept their argument, then they still have the right to use linux. My understanding is that their complete lack of acceptance of the GPL only invalidates their right to DISTRIBUTE linux, not use it internally.

    Not necessarily.

    My understanding is that Oracle only supports installations on certified platforms. If someone pays a lot of money for an Oracle license with support, why would they then install it on a platform that Oracle will not support?

    Yeah, I think he gets that.

    I believe his point is that Novell is listed as a backer of this, but their product (SuSE) is not listed among the linux companies that made the announcement.

    On the other hand Redhat is also listed in the same manner, so I don't think it means anything.

    Not if it is dictated by the function of the object, it can't. And I'd say that almost all aspects of the rubik's cube's appearance are functional.

    Not necessarily. The point of a rubix cube is to allign the matching sides. Ob the rubix cube the sides match based on particular colors. A competing toy could match on pictures or color patterns.

    Here's a photo of the magic cube. Is it just me, or is the color scheme even the same? I've done a bit of quick searching for rubix cube photos, and the colors seem pretty damn close.

    I washed my cellphone... twice.

    The first time it eventually started working fine (after drying).

    The second time it worked except the screen was dimmer, and the phone would not ring out loud. Only the vibrate function worked.

    and if you have gigabit, the link can outpace the remote disk anyway

    Gigabit ethernet might give you enough bandwith for swapping, but the latency will kill you.

    - 2.6.0, 2.6.1 and 2.6.2 were unstable for me, with doozies such as oopses while rmmoding and random crashes using ide-scsi (yes I know it's deprecated, but some of us need it).

    Out if curiosity, why do you need ide-scsi? Most people in the past used it for CD burning under linux, but ide-scsi is no longer a requirement for using ATAPI cd burners.

    There are other uses as well (tape drives for example), but they're generally a lot less common.

    If you max out your outbound bandwith, your inbound suffers greatly. By default, bittorrent tries to send out way too much for asymmetric links.

    If you limit your outbound to about half of your outbound capacity, things work much better.

    There is one scene with a computer generated Jabba the Hutt that is just awful.

    This isn't meant as a troll but don't the Gnome folks lambast KDE for being less "free" than it?

    Not anymore.

    Initially KDE was a fully GPLed desktop enviroment that used a proprietary toolkit (QT). Since then, QT has been released under a dual license (QPL/GPL), and is considered to be Free Software, so that particular issue is resolved.

    I'm personally glad there were licensing issues intially. It's the entire reason Gnome was even created, and competition is always good.

    My understanding from reading the website was that they were looking to add redudancy to prevent a single machine was taking everything down again.

    My guess would be a couple smaller machines rather than a single $20,000 system here.

    I disagree.

    The DMCA also makes it illegal to "pick the lock" as well, not just the creation of the tool to pick the lock. And it doesn't distinguish between locks you own and locks you don't own.

    LGPL is only good if you like using nonfree proprietary software.



    Or you're planning on WRITING non-free proprietary software. This distribution is for businesses after all. If they're a software company putting out non-free desktop software, then linking against an LGPL'ed library would be preferred.

    Fedora is basically Redhat's testbed for new technology, so it makes perfect sense for them to push out 2.6 this quickly.

    I think the main problem here is the slashdot headline, not the product itself.

    At $1,395 this is hardly a "mini-server for the masses". To me that implies personal use. This is the mini-server for small businesses.
