But why on earth would Microsoft patent this? Sure they've patented plenty of things that have demonstratable prior art, but come on, this is just silly. 20 years of prior art! Whats next? A patent on $ or # as a prompt?
Actually, you probably need to read your companies TOS for using their systems. Most likely they will state that you have absolutely no expectation of privacy when using their systems. Even if your company doesn't have an offical TOS, when your using ANY computer service that you don't own you don't have an expectation of privacy, unless explicitly stated.
The 5th amendment simply states that YOU don't have to testify that you've done something thats illegal. For instance a DA could subpoena your tax records and your employers payroll to prove that you're commiting tax fraud. They could not however force you to SAY that you've commited tax fraud.
Also, anything that is written (electronically or other wise) is not specifically covered by the 5th, even if it is something private, like a journal or a diary.
The laws regarding expectation of privacy are quite interesting. I would reccomend that you read up on them, as quite a bit of the time you have absolutely no expectation of privacy.
Google "expectation of privacy" and you'll get lots of good info.
I'm pretty tired of arguing about all this. I'm quite willing to change my view point. As I have pointed out in other posts I'm not a fan of GWB.
I've done quite a bit of digging and reading and come to the conclusions I have on my own. I don't watch TV (indeed I don't even OWN a tv), all of my info comes from various and sundry news sites on the net(btw, none from fox, nor from silly talk-show hosts like Limbaugh). However, not being a democrat I don't have a knee-jerk reaction to everything Bush does, and have given him the benefit of the doubt on many things, him being the president, just like I gave Clinton the benefit of the doubt on many things. Turns out I was wrong about Clinton. Could be I'm wrong about GWB. Perhaps he is Satan incarnate as you portray him.
Bush hasn't proved his case, but neither has anyone else in my book. Bush has until November to prove his case with me. If he hasn't done so by then well, thats one less vote isn't it? I, however seem to be willing to admit that I am wrong. Can you make that same claim?
Lastly, sorry about the dead links, they worked when I posted them (very embarrasing). I'm not going to waste my time to dig a working link up for those though as I don't think anything that anyone could say or show you would make an ounce of difference to your opinion.
Also, your argument "Not that any weapons found now are relevant after the US has had its forces on the ground for so long" is the flip-side to the argument, if we hadn't delayed in going in Saddam wouldn't have time to hide the weapons. Like the fighter jet that was found buried in the desert.
And while your calling me on the carpet for sources, please provide sources where Americans have been accused of raping and torturing. By the way, Abu Ghraib is in no way considered torture, even by Geneva Convention standards. Torture is something like the rape rooms that operated under Saddam's rule or the accunts of people being gradually lowered into wood chippers by Saddam's sons for fun. Abu Gharib was unfortunate. It should not have happend, but it's not torture. Frat boys get hazed worse than that.
I won't respond to your claim about the 9/11 commission as another poster already has.
Ah, this was a pretty silly post and I was not going to reply, but I'm bored.
First, your anti-semitism has made you unseemly, and your zionist conspiracy theories make me wonder if you were wearing a tin-foil hat while typing your post. If you reply I'm sure you'll toss in a bit about the masons and the illumanati.
Second, the company that is distributing Moore's movie accepted help to promote the movie in the middle east from Hezbollah ( http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTI CLE_ID=39079 ). Hezbolla broadcasts Anti-American rhetoric on it's TV channel Al Manar, up to and including the killing of innocent American civillians. Perhaps Moore had nothing to say about this, but if it was my film I certainly wouldn't allow it to be promoted by a terrorist orginization. Moore IS as bad as I make him out to be.
Third, yes Bush is not the best thing for America. But can you please point me to factual information that supports your claim that he had ANYTHING to do with 9/11. Charges have not been brought against him, and no one of any crediability has had the audacity to claim that he has. Also, can you point me to some factual information that Bush supports murder? Killing yes, war yes. War is not murder however. War, as bad as it is, is sometimes nessary. WMDs have been found in Iraq (12 artillary shells with enough sarin gas to kill 100,000 people). I'm not particularly a fan of this war, but the world is undeniably a better place without Saddam Hussein. I think the liberation of the Iraqi people was a good thing to do.
The liberals in this country love to attack Bush. The fact remains if he REALLY did something wrong, and broke the law, he would be charged. People scream "War Criminal, Murder", the fact remains, if these things were true, at least the UN would level charges against him. This hasn't happend. Even former President Clinton, in his interview with Larry King this past week, praised Bush for his actions in Iraq.
Also, can you please point out what I am obsessed about? I obsess about nothing. I am concerned about the state of the union that I live in. America has gone from being one of the greatest loved countries in the world to being one of the most despised. I don't like this. Has Bush contributed to this? Certainly so. Should he be shown the door? Yup, probably. Unfortunatly the dems and republicans are equally bad for this country and our other choice for prez isn't any better than Bush. The lesser of two evils is still evil.
Lastly, can you please explain how my post was a "half-assed denial structure(s)" ?
Your arguments are pretty weak and stem mostly from lack of experiance/ignorance (no, I'm not insulting you, I'm just saying your not informed about somethings)
First off, yes hardware under Linux/BSD is not as easy as it is under windows. Mostly this is because of lack of vendor support. However, every distro has a hardware compatability list. If your not using hardware that is compatable, then it's your own fault.
Second, I don't know what 3D driver your talking about, but I've installed the nVidia 3D driver on redhat and freebsd 5. Neither were much work. 15 mins max. No need for re-compiling on the linux box and the modules I needed in the freebsd kernel were dynamically loaded.
Third, there is no reason for a 5 hour install of ANY mail server on ANY OS. This can only be attributed to, again, lack of experiace or ignorance.
Just as a footnote that probably no will see since there are 2000+ comments on this topic already:
WMDS HAVE been found in Iraq. 12 artillary shells containing sarin gas were found just last week. These shells have the capability to kill 100,000 people. If thats not a weapon of mass distruction, I don't know what is.
I don't support Bush. As far as foriegn relations goes he has done worse than any other president since the world was griping about manifest destiny. However, the world is a better place without Saddam. The Iraqi people are certainly better off without him. Saddam definatly supported terriorists, be they AL-Q. or others. If he had the chance he would have done every thing in his power to kill Americans. We're Bush's reasons for Iraq flakey and based on bad intelligence? Definatly. Am I glad we did it any way. Yes.
There is an easy way to tell when Moore is lying (or at least distorting the truth). It's whenever he's talking or behind a camera. Bowling for Columbine was a such a propaganda piece I bet it could have taught Pravda a lesson. Not only is much of Bowling for Columbine lies, Moore knows they are becuase he was told his info was inaccurate WHILE he was filming. Please check http://www.bowlingfortruth.com . Moore has ABSOLUTLY NO CREDIABILITY.
Now that you've (hopefully) read that site, lets apply what we know about Moore to his new movie. First, he's a rabid anti-republican. How many of you would pay any attention to a movie about democrats that was filmed by Rush Limbaugh? Hopefully none. It's stupid, it'd be like asking a satanist to tell you about christianity.
Finally, check http://politics.slate.msn.com/id/2102723/ . This page is written by a fairly left-wing guy, and he tears apart this piece of crap that Moore has shat out.
I don't like Bush. I'm a libertarian, and a limited-government guy. Bush certainly doesn't appeal to me, but Moore has taken a que from Big Brother about dis-information. To him IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH and lies are truth.
Horrible as it sounds working techsupport is a good way to get your foot in the door. Not only does it give you experiance, but if the company is any good you'll have the chance at promotion. Every company I've worked at that had tech support had an unspoken rule: Tier 3 support was a training ground for junior admin positions.
It's not the best way for a programmer to get noticed, but it's a damn good way to be able to put some experiance on your resume. If programming is your thing, why not write some code for the open source community or contribute code to an existing project. You might not have any professional experiance, but having your code credited on a reputable project would look pretty nice as well.
Exaclty what would you consider programming? I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you, but you've basically said nothing except for: "HTML isn't programing because it isn't". Please elucidate your point.
Again, all replies are missing my point. Weak arguments (or not) aside, my point remains that price point contributes to instances of piracy. If photoshop were $20.00 practically no one would pirate it. Why would you need to it's $20.00 ? It's a silly argument to compare stealing a car to stealing a piece of software:
1. Stealing a car takes a large amount of skill. Stealing software takes a google search.
2. Stealing a car requires a large number of other crimes to be sucessful (i.e. insurace fraud, alteration of DMV records, alteration of VIN numbers) Stealing software requires no other illegal acts.
Regardless of other arguments, wheather or not you belive that my arguments are valid, the point remains that a high price point contributes to a high instance of piracy.
Parent said that price had no correlation to piracy. So whats your point? Perhaps they have the money to pay for school, but don't have $700 to buy a PERSONAL copy of photoshop that they can use at home after paying for school. Or like the video student that I know that barely has enough money to pay for groceries. His school is paid for through scholarships. Unfortunatly for him the scholarships he has won't pay for a personal copy of After Effects when he can use the copy in the schools editing lab.
Past that, how many people do you know that are willing to pay nearly $700.00 for photoshop just to occasionally open it for some personal photo retouching? How about MS Office, another oft-pirated piece of software. How many people do you know that are willing to pay $400 to occasionally fire up Excel or Word?
My point is, these extreamly expensive pieces of software are pirated very often. Why? Because people that need them occasionaly aren't willing to pay for it when they can get it some other way. If it were more affordable, or even used something as off-the-wall as micropayments the piracy rates for titles like this would go down. Hence, my point of saying that high price and low incident of use induce some people to steal software.
Saying that their is NO correlation is pure stupidity. Want to know why? Simple. I know quite a few graphical art students that have pirated Photoshop simply because they couldn't afford it. Did they want to buy it? Yes, it's their tool of choice. Could they afford it? No, their art students. Same with a friend of mine that is a tv production major. He has a copy of After Effects that he uses all the time. Does he want a legit copy? Absolutly. Can he afford it. No way.
Grand-parent may or may not have had a good post, but yours was pretty inane.
Wait a sec... Google being forged into the next Microsoft? How does that work exactly? Google has gotten where it is because the system actually does work sometimes. They have the best product on the market. They get their marketshare from having the best product. Not buying or suing or bullying the competition like Microsoft.
Seeing as Google isn't really a big rampaging bear like Microsoft, exactly how is google being forged into the next Microsoft?
How the hell did this get modded interesting? Jebus! Did the moderators have their funny bone replaced with some sort of "if I'm not serious all the time I'll die" bone?
Thats just an inane argument. You sign a contract when you move into a neighborhood with a home owners association. If you don't sign the agreement you can't buy. Buy signing the CONTRACT you give up your rights and agree to the terms of the contract.
Property rights are indeed eroding in the US. But not because of things like this. If you want to paint your house pink with purple polka-dots, don't move into a neighborhood with a homeowners association.
AOL/Time Warner is a VERY large corp that uses mainly Solaris and Linux as their server platforms. I wonder if this would continue to be the case if MS took over?
People really need to get away from the notion that America is a democracy. We're not. We're a consitutional republic. The means that despite what the majority wants, the rule of LAW supercedes that want.
This is one of the major problems in the US today. People think we're a democracy. True, we do run the country, more or less, democratically. However, the Constitution, it's amendments, and other works of Law are what rule this country. The executive branch enforces the law, the legislative branch makes new laws, and the judicial system rules whether these laws abide by the Constitution.
Didn't you pay attention at ALL in school? Freedom of Speech isn't an "added bonus"! It's a right as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Pure and simple, no argument can be made against this. I mean come on it's right their in the name "Bill of Rights" not "Bill of Added Bonuses".
Regulating speech is not only silly, but very dangerous. Can't you understand that rolling over and just taking something like this sets up a precident for takeing away our other guaranteed rights? You think freespeech is an added bonus. What if the FCC decideds that things on Slashdot are offensive. I know I get offended by alot of things on here. In fact, your comment offends me a pretty good bit. By your reasoning, if a majority of people get offended by your comment, you shouldn't be able to post it. Can you see how this is dangerous?
I have 6 PCs and a laptop. I would not have a single x86 system if the price of Apple's hardware were competitive with x86 hardware or if I could at least build one myself without having to jump through 8000 hoops.
Granted, I understand Apple's desire to maintain strict control over the quality etc... of their products, but the simple fact is that "Mom and Dad" or "Dear Ole' Granny" aren't going to spend $1300.00 on a computer anymore (yes, I know e-macs are $799.00 but have you seen advertising for these? I haven't), much less $1800.00 for a G5.
All that said howerver, Apple seems content with it's market share. Apple likes to innovate and cater to THEIR market. Saying that Apple should become basically another pc clone is like saying Lotus, or McLaren, or Saleen or any of the other niche car makers should start makeing passenger cars. Theirs not really a point to it. They do what they do well, and they will ALWAYS have support, and always have a market.

Is that if the FBI, ATF, *BI, or whoever seizes your property in the investigation of a crime, they are in no way liable for any damage that occurs to your property, if you can even consider it your property anymore, because, even if your property was deemed to have NOTHING to do with the crime being investigated, said above entities are not required to return your property. You have to SUE to get it back. Now how's that for some bullshit.
Simple, because no one likes you and we all try to avoid talking to you whenever possible.
But why on earth would Microsoft patent this? Sure they've patented plenty of things that have demonstratable prior art, but come on, this is just silly. 20 years of prior art! Whats next? A patent on $ or # as a prompt?

Theirs not really a point to it. They do what they do well, and they will ALWAYS have support, and always have a market.
neeiner neeiner neeiner I got mine and you have to wait 3 weeks!
Hahahaha! Suckers!
Head.
