Even more to the point, if the interest Apple was paying on the debt was lower than the return they could make investing the $300M, then (everything else being equal), this wasn't the best use of their cash.

A good point, except for the fact that the debt was in the form of bonds that came due this month. They didn't have any choice but to pay them off.

The 9000 represent only a fraction of e-mail sent to Hotmail addresses as part of the campaign, but since the spam trap addresses could never have legitimately opted in, they are the smoking gun in the lawsuit against 'Snotty'.

Well, scanning the list of members yields:

    A&M / Geffen / Interscope / Universal / Island / Def Jam / MCA / Mercury / Polydor / Polygram

All owned by Vivendi (V) on NYSE. This is a French company, and probably held largely by Europeans (it is listed on many exchanges).

    Arista / BMG / RCA

Owned by Bertelsmann AG. This German company is not traded on any American markets, so is probably not widely held by Americans.

Atlantic / Elektra / Warner Bros.

Part of the AOL/TW mega-conglomerate (AOL). Many U.S. investors, and unhappy ones at that.

    Bad Boy

    Puffy's label. Not publicly traded.

    EMI / Capitol / Chrysalis / Virgin

I believe EMI is a British company. I could not find a listing on any North American Exchanges.

    Columbia / Epic / Legacy / Sony

Ah, Sony (SNE). Fingers in so many pies. Most notably, Mariah Carey. Double-entendre intended.

Death Row. 2Pac (R.I.P.?) and a few others. Not public.

DreamWorks. Not public. But you could say that at least three Americans hold stock in this company (Spielberg, Katzenberg, Geffen).

You would have to do your own research to come up with some hard figures, but in the list of Big Names, it seems that the RIAA is protecting mostly the interests of some privately held companies and foreign shareholders. Fairly scary stuff.

In the original GTA for PC, the three cities were Liberty City, San Andreas (probably 'frisco, because of all the hills), and Vice City in that order. Not sure why they are skipping straight to Vice City - probably because of plot issues.

IMO, the original GTA had much more creative missions than GTA3, though the graphics and play control were a lot worse. I just stumbled on the missions with the Bitch 'n Dog food owner (GTA3) last night and they are AWFUL! Go pick up someone in a car, bring them back in the car, destroy the car. 4 separate missions, all the same!

I love the GTA3 engine - if they can bring back the writers from the first GTA series, they will have themselves a kickass game on their hands.

I think it's much more plausible that humans have adjusted their opinion of what an 'urgent' meow and a 'contented' meow are, rather than the cats adjusting to our 'language'. We observe a contented cat and the associated meow and we learn to recognize the difference. Which do you think is more likely? Cats have evolved a language to speak to humans, or humans have learned to recognize cats' language?

Comparisons to feral cats in zoos, let alone the wild makes no sense. It might make more sense to raise a feral cat in one's house from kittenhood and see if it made the same language adjustments. I very much doubt that the language is herditary.

I think this attitude is very common among employers these days, but they are soon due for a wakeup call.

Much of the problem over the last 8 months was a kneejerk lockup on IT spending due to Sept. 11th and the associated hit on the economy. So there is a TON of money just waiting to be spent on IT again. A certain degree of "you're lucky you have a job" was to be expected in an economic slump, but now employers are starting to push things a little too far.

I see the IT economy really starting to pick up and soon employers will find that bullying their employees will result in their not having any good people left. I suggest you take a look at what's out there now. Don't just take your boss's word for it.
