I applied for a government job a while back and was accepted. Part of it was a certain security clearance. By the time everything was complete and I could start working I was already at another job (for a year - took them a while didn't it). So I refused it once they got back and the clearance never got used.
It's a test of how trustworthy, law abiding and serious you are. Logic goes that people who don't take their debts/contracts seriously will be more likely to do similar with sensitive data from their employer. They want to see whether you're capable of keeping your end of the bargain with the banks/lending institutions. It actually makes sense. Foreign operatives? LOL. Oh, another thing they will check is your criminal background (or hopefully lack there of).
I am surprised you got modded funny. Scripters in my firm certainly think C++ is obscure, arcane and is the cause of all exploits, not bad programmers and bad programming techniques.
They gave them our money (in my case literally since I'm a RBC customer). SCO didn't scam anything our of IBM, big deal - the loss is the cost of doing business. Seriously, did you ever think about the type of jackass in the bank who approved investing in SCO? Talk about gross incompetence.
I agree but I still think it's time Liberals go. They have been in power for too long and it shows. It wouldn't hurt to see some of them in jail (Gagliano,...) to show the crime doesn't pay. Also, Bush being a Bible nut is a little over-played. Same for Conservatives here.
The Muslims in Srebrenica were supposed to be disarmed and under protection of the Dutch - so called "UN Safe Haven". Those Dutch were there doing nothing while the Muslims were running around the Serbian villages near Srebrenica burning, raping and decapitating (their captain Naser Oric is The Hague answering for those things right now). The complacent US and Europe didn't care because the victims were the bad Serbs. I am not trying to justify what ulimately happened to those Muslims, just explaining what complacency can lead to.
move to Canada part too. You wanna move here? Go right ahead. We have been having a "Liberal" (centre left, kind of like Canadian Democrats) government that is myred in scandal and mismanagement (another word for what they're doing is theft). Liberal with our cash they are. Yet they keep winning the federal elections. I am seriously sick of you "smart" people thinking that left leaning is automatically better. If I were in the States I'd vote Bush and my IQ is well above average. Look at Clinton. What fscking good did he do for anybody? The recession started during his term in office so he wasn't really a boon for the economy. He ignored Osama during his entire stay in office even after the first attempt at the WTC and the US embasies in Africa. That complacence culminated in 9/11. Oh, wait, he decoded the human genome, right? What makes you think that Kerry would be any different? He's as amituous as Clinton and surrounded with Clinton people. Also a political marriage like Clintons. If you were any smarter you'd realize that these guys have themselves on their minds and not you or anybody else. Clinton was hell bent on getting into history books and not really doing anything real. I am *sick* of those "liberals" and "democrats" (note that I am very much liberal leaning in my beliefs, just the *liberal* parties today aren't really my cup of tea).
I'm still trying to get my 8X to burn at 4X. I'm at my third stack of media (all from different manufacturers) and all I can do is 2.4X. Only coasters at 4X (except for Maxell media which I ran out of early on).
Why is this modded a troll? Micro-kernels sound like a neat idea. But then again, monolithic kernels should be good enough for everyone.
I can't find the 1100 Dell's web site but I found

Apple Announces New iBooks
·
· Score: 4, Informative
four versions of the 1150. The low end one kind of matches what the guy in the parent thread said (I don't know what kind of 1100 your girlfriend has): -No S Video -No Radeon 9200 (i.e. integrated shit video) -No combo drive for the $999 one -No firewire -No PCMCIA
FYI, wireless was debuted by Apple in an *iBook*. That's right, the first machine shipped by Apple to have AirPort was an iBook so no it's not a recent change. I am yet to see more than an hour and a half hours of life from any PC non-Centrino laptop (the bricks with two batteries not counted). Your girlfriend has one hell of a laptop there for $999.
Where are the mod points when you need them? That's a pretty brazen scam and I hope not too many people got hooked. Actually, this slashdotting may have helped.
I am a Linux supporter myself and also hold Linus in highest regard. But what about a fork at this point? All this politicizing is really annoying and it hinders adoption of Linux. Having a well defined ABI doesn't change anything except it stops twisting the arms of users and manufacturers. Let the users decide whether they'll buy a piece of hardware with an open source or a closed source driver.
down to Indian level. I am not greedy but my mortgage is more than an Indian IT professional will make in a lifetime. And I have a tiny townhouse. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Indian guy actually has a highter standard of living than me despite my higher sallary. The only ones who are going to benefit from this outsourcing BS are the few fatties at the tops of corporations.
Watch when random people start running and/or calling Bell asking why are they being wire-tapped. "It wasn't me, they made me do it I swear! Please don't tap my phone."
as good I'll buy that machine. Your view is too simplistic. It's not just the hardware, it's the software as well. And XP doesn't compare to OS X in any way.
I am pretty much as you - my PowerBook and other digital goodies always go with me and somehow I don't feel like a target. The other option is not to take a bath for a week before the trip or better yet, go to the gym for a week without taking a bath and the muggers will be afraid of you - trust me on this one.
They have the Windows and Office divisions that have 90% + profit margins and all the other divisions are losing cash hand over fist (well, except the server division, they break even). They can probably afford to give those players for free if they so wanted. I don't think immediate profit is the first thing on their minds when they go copying competitors. They try to undercut them (while losing oodles of cash) and when the competition are dead, then they jack up the prices. Nothing like a multi blllion dollar monopoly.
I am typing this on a 867 MHz G4 PowerBook and it seems plenty fast - no urge to upgrade at all (unless Steve unleashes the G5 PB but that's another story). 6W for a CPU is awesome though. This G4 is ~20 W and the laptop lives anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hr.
And he's got their briefcase? Probably recounting the cash before he gives them the papers. He smartened up, that Al Gore.

I can only write DVD-R up to 4X, DVD+R are 8X. Still I am having trouble with every type of media.

images so it's kind of worthless since the whole point of the article are the images.

Remeber that. Kerry supported the war in Iraq. I don't see much difference between the GOP and those "liberals".
