I think he might have made his point better if he compared another game system instead of just one game. Guitar Hero uses a guitar controller. Almost all Wii games use the Wii controller. However, neither are paticuarly gimmicky.. no more than any other controller, in my opinion. Also, DDR uses it's own controller and people have not tired of that "gimmick" either.

Actually, it looks like Blizzard is taking steps to avoid this. Gear drops from the current high-end 25 man raids aren't really that much more impressive than crafted epics or PvP gear. In some cases, the crafted epics/PvP gear are better than the raid drops!
I understand that there is arena specific PvP gear and I'm not sure how that stacks up against raid/quest gear. They have different itemization. PvP gear has alot of stam and resilience, so you last longer. Raid gear is more focused on DPS or healing. If you try to PvP in raid gear, you're likely to not last very long against players who can kill you before your teammates can get a heal off.
The problem is there just aren't as many hardcore gamers as casual. It's a market, sure, but it's notoriously hard to target (hardcore gamers tend to be extremely picky), and the profit just isn't there most of the time.
As people who could be identified as true "hard-core" gamers (the real ones, not the ones Microsoft tries to claim play Xbox all day) grow older, they eventually find they don't have as much time to play games. So they naturally play less, become less skilled, and lose interest. To really play at a hard-core level, you have to put in alot of time and practice into the games/genres you like. Without time/practice, it's really impossible to keep up that level of skill. I've went back and played games I used to rock at, and of course they kicked my ass, because I had not kept up practice and lost my edge.
Of course, new gamers may come forward to take their place. They are unfortunately not an easy market to target, and in addition, more and more casuals are entering the market. They are where the money is, so it's likely truly hard-core games will become a thing of the past, or only be made by fans who want to challenge themselves and eachother.
You're right.. most ads are aimed squarely at the LCD (Lowest common denominator). It's easier, cheaper and more effective to create bland, annoying ads and shovel them out onto the air, than make something that doesn't insult the viewer's intelligence.
"I've enjoyed this LOLer coaster of a ride: Hirai's and Kutaragi's comments, shortages, BD v. Hd disc battles, lack of rumble. *sniff* I'm so sad to see it go."
It's not over yet.. I have a feeling we'll get more dumb Sony comments and the same shortages around December. Not to mention the fallout..
People still make single player levels for Doom/Doom II. That's how good the gameplay is. To this day, I still haven't played a FPS with the game balance of Doom II. It's just perfect.
I got a pair of SR-40's, and they were very uncomfortable. Felt like they were squishing my ears. Couldn't wear em for an hour, even. Eventually the left speaker got loose, I sent it for repairs, and when I got it back, gave it away to my younger brother.
I bought Sennheiser HD 570's and have never looked back. They feel great, I can wear them for hours with no problems, and they sound good too. I've listened in on the more expensive Sennheisers and of course they blow the HD 570 away.. but I don't want to spend a small fortune.
You're right, but it's much easier to do the XP grind thing. So guess what they'll go for?
Even in a game I made myself, I added awards and a point total that you have to get up high enough to reach some extra levels. I feel it adds replay value to the game. Some other games really do try to stretch their limited content with repetitive crap (Every MMORPG ever comes to mind)

Leave it to Microsoft to leave a vunerability in something to do with color management. Jesus.

The big problem is.. Lumines could easily have be done on the GBA, nevermind the DS. So I'm not paticuarly impressed. I wouldn't be surprised to see a GBA port at some point.

It's not about spending money at all. The sure-fire way you know you've got a wannabe is someone who brags about his PC more than his accomplishments.

Yes, people will really tolerate random popups and keyloggers that steal passwords/credit card information. What?
I remember ClarisWorks that came with my old Performa 550. I was doing that kind of fun stuff in '93. Go Macs.
New ad campaign ..
Nintendo Wii : So fun, you might just break something.

You might not recover an intact ear every time, if you happened to kill said goblin with a giant sword/huge fireball/crippling curse of doom/etc.
Commercials that don't insult the intelligence of the viewer, and are actually worth watching?
..
Nahh
By substantial changes, you mean a lower resolution and lower poly count? Who cares, as long as it's playable.
Haven't you heard? Ridiculous system names are the new In. Except Sony to rename their new console to the Playstation Wii ..

Older PCs will be in demand if this actually passes. Imagine a P3-800 selling for $1000. :P
