  3. The Art of Food Preparation is Timing on Chefs As Chemists · · Score: 1

I don't know if Chemists in general are good with timing. When I was little my mother would start cooking for the day at 8am,making everything from scratch and magically at lunch and dinner all the correct dishes would be finished simultaneously. Now that is an art.

Nowadays scientists in universities don't have time for science. They must publish, get grants, do marketing, blah, blah. After a few decades of this they probably don't even know the value of pi. So how the hell do we expect them to get home in time to cook anything?

Bandwidth for police/fire? You've got to be kidding. They paid a zillion dollars of our tax money for that Motorola trunked radio system. They damn well have it working right.

And the last thing I want when I dial 911 is for that WiFi system to be in the loop. May as well drive to the ER. (or shoot the intruder, lol) I am unable to connect much of the time and I am right in the heart of the system. Plus it won't start up with Firefox. I can only get it to work with IE. I'm not certain what or if any Firefox setting can be tweeked for that.

I don't know about any other cities, but in Portland Oregon the municipal wifi was billed as ,wonderful system that would provide everyone with free broadband. Well if you can log in to the system, you find all sorts or limitations- and something else- that there is a parallel pay Wifi system run by the same company. Gee, wonder how that happened? I never heard any public discussion on the matter. And I wonder how much Portland paid for this sweet deal?

I have to admit that I have a grudge against them. When they took the last of the English programming off of shortwave, listening to them just wasn't fun any more. I thought, screw them, I'll listen to Radio Netherlands. Being a radio listener for so long, there was just something that seems wrong about listening to a shortwave station on the internet.

Oh, and good luck if you are in some God forsaken place without internet and only speak English.

In addition to the public safety issues, there are purely engineering ones. We are on a path to where the background noise level caused by multitudes of transmitters is going to render much of the radio spectrum useless. I know OpenBSD is renowned as a secure system, but it also is a good desktop OS. In fact, I bet it recognizes more devices than my Windoze Vista. I was pleasantly surprised the last time I tried out OpenBSD on my laptop. My only complaint is that the ports are not as comprehensive as FreeBSD. But then, maybe I should be a maintainer for one and stop complaining, lol.
