  1. Vestigial Finder Remnants on A Better Finder? · · Score: 1

Honestly, I'm amazed by how little I even use the Finder in OS X. I use LaunchBar to launch all my applications (and about a million other things). I use the terminal or Project Builder to edit single text files. iPhoto to organize my pictures. iTunes to search through MP3s. locate to, well, find things. When I'm tabbing around between apps, Finder is usually one of the last things on the list. The main time I seem to use the Finder is to manage my downloaded files, or drag some new app from a disk image into the Applications folder.

It seems like a lot of the functionality that the Finder used to handle is now taken care of by indiviual, specialized apps, that know more about the files in question than the Finder does (i.e. MP3 tags, photo import batch, etc) and can manipulate the files better using that information.

In OS 9, the Finder was indispensible. In OS X, it has really become just another app. An interface for examining file system contents, dragging files around, and opening files and applications. But unlike OS 9 days, it's hard to think of much that the Finder does that can't be done using some other method. More options is a good thing.

Not to say that the Finder couldn't be improved. Maybe its pokiness and poor design is what has prompted so many to use alternative methods. But, I'm happy when the Finder just stays out of my way, which it does quite well now.

  2. FreeIsWhereUDontHave2DoNothingOrPay4Nothing on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 1

Exactly, but your logic is lost on much of the /. crowd, for whom "free" is like a panacea, and they're willing to put up with ungodly amounts of hassle, because it's "free". The times I've tried downloading MP3s from Limewire, Kazaa, et. al. always turns into a time-consuming and frustrating experience. As someone once astutely pointed out, "Linux is only free if your time is worthless".

I think $.99 is a very fair price. I'm certain integration with iTunes will be seamless. You will probably even be able to use iTunes to browse the online catalog before you download the song, using the search capabilities of iTunes to browse by artist, album, genre, etc. Then you find the tracks you want, and maybe a dialog prompts you to O.K. the charge, and it starts playing. Sign me up, I say.

  3. Re:Is it cosher? Is it lenten? on Lab-Grown Steak · · Score: 2, Informative

Since this is still going to be derived from animal meat, I'd say this would fall into the 'meat' category as far as the laws of kashrut apply. However, there could be a little grey area there, if the animal were not actually seriously harmed to produce the food, then it would seem to fall more into the 'milk' category.

The origin of the kosher guidelines stem from the old testament phrase (roughly): do not boil the calf in its mother's milk. Which is more about respect for the humane treatment of animals than for any bizarre reaction between meat and milk.

If you could grow animal protein from an animal biopsy, I don't see the problem with grilling up a cheeseburger out of it. But religious laws are usually not that flexible or sensible.

Great, but it will never happen. Especially if they keep throwing around the phrase Gore would have won if....

I find it astounding how many people successfully make themselves oblivious to the HUGE flaws in the 2000 US presidential election.

Go read the comments for Stupid White Men. Actually, I just noticed that Amazon removed all the customer comments for this book. How interesting! OK, go read the book instead. You will either become very very regretful and angry, or you will douse the book in lighter fluid, light a match, and wipe any information therein from your memory.

The thing that really struck me about the book was how many people high up in our government were willing to pervert the rules to get the election results they wanted. This seems like basic human nature, which handily explains why Bush supporters feel no qualms about any of the goings-on in FL. Their man is the one in office.

This is turning into more of a rant than I wanted it to... but my point is, whether the voting system is mathematically "fair" or not, there were much more fundamental problems with the election than the single-vote system. Namely, with our biased, conflict-of-interest supreme court and crooked Florida voting officials, there was no impartial higher power to enforce the basic proceedings of the election process itself! I suppose that's what U.N. peacekeepers are for. We sure could have used some of those around here.

  6. Spinning Glass Spheres on Franklin's Glass Armonica · · Score: 5, Interesting

Funny to see this on slashdot, I'm about 1/3 the way through Carl Van Doren's biography on Franklin. Right away I see the correlations between the armonica and his experiments with electricity, namely rubbing spinning glass (Leyden) jars with cloth. This is really a fabulous book, btw. It's amazing how active his mind was, and how un-pretentious he was, even after achieving fame. The fact that he didn't patent his inventions is, really stunning, especially given his thrift. This was not a man who cared nothing for wealth. He was just incredible well-scrupled, and early on devised a very involved person code which he lived by very well (although as I said I'm only 1/3 through the book). If you want to read about a truly great thinker, check out more on Benny.

  7. SF Metreon does this already on IMAX Develops Movie Transfer Technology · · Score: 1

I saw LOTR on their IMAX screen last year. I think they show several regular movies in there, but don't publicize the fact very much. It wasn't listed as an IMAX, except on the sfgate.com site. When I got to the theater, there was no mention of any IMAX hubbub, and I figured it had been a typo on sfgate. But there she was! A screen like a snowhill, huge as all get out.

I'm assuming they just used a different lense, and had it on 35mm. It was a tad grainy, but the immersion factor more than made up for it.

  9. No-Brainer on Seeking Power Mac Recommendations? · · Score: 1

If you're doing development and any sort of compiling is involved, MHz matters. I was shocked at the difference in compile times between my Single Processor G4/433 and the dual 800 I used briefly at WWDC for java/WebObjects development. Granted, that's almost a four-fold increase in MHz, but I figured the bus or hard drive might be the bottleneck. Not so.

Definitely get the dual 1 GHz, which comes with 512 MB RAM (plenty, most likely). Plus, looks like you can get a $500 credit towards an Apple display (which are gorgeous things) with that machine right now. Really nice feature of the displays is that they only have one cable to the computer, supplies signal, power, and USB. Less clutter! I must say, all this talk is making me a tad jealous. Good luck to you.

I'll be thrilled if they release Jaguar (although I think it will be 10.5, not 10.2), mostly because of the improvements to Mail. Those #*&!%# spammers finally got ahold of my email address, and the new Mail app has excellent spam filtering. That, and the ability to specify a port# for your SMTP server, so I don't need to keep switching from mail.earthlink.net to mail.pacbell.net when I take my laptop from home to work, since both ISPs block traffic on those ports to any other server. Lots of other goodies in there, too.

  12. Naw... on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

It's just not a very good album! He sings way too much on it, and uses some pretty crappy synth-cello and synth-violin sounds on it, and the overall effect is very amateurish.

I think the other album I purchased with the Moby CD debunks his claim, anyway. Wilco's newest album was released in its entirety on their website, for download. I bought the album, partly because I think the band has some very good ideas about how to write a song, but also as a vote in the petition that says downloading music does not hurt record sales. Which, according to the sales on this album, appear to be true.

I think Moby is just looking for an scapegoat to blame for disappointing sales of an album that, even if it were well produced, would be very redundant with the work he's already produced.

  14. Sticking with the pod on Toshiba's iPod Competitor · · Score: 2, Interesting

Main plus on the Toshiba seems to be swap capability on the drive. For upgradability reasons, mostly (which Apple never seems too concerned about). Sure, I can fit my entire MP3 collection on less than half my iPod's 5G drive, but then I filled the rest up with backups, documentation, etc.

The things the Toshiba seems to be lacking are:
a scroll wheel (which really seems like the ideal interface for navigation LONG lists)
    recharging from USB cable(?)

The main reason I bought an iPod is it seemed like the first device I could actually use that would really take advantage of the Firewire ports on my computer, which I never ever used. The same seems true for this Toshiba and windows users. w/USB 2.0
