    It's far prettier on the PC. Until it crashes, anyway. Why does it crash? Dunno - it only ever crashes with that game, otherwise the machine goes for weeks between (planned) reboots.

    So what you're saying is that your pc is perfectly adequate for gaming except when you try to get the steaming turd that is Fallout 3 to run?

    (For the record: with the latest patches I haven't seen any issues with F3 on my machine anymore)

    But quite often the CSM as a group has a far better view of the consequences of certain changes.

    A large majority of the players focus on a single aspect of gameplay and what that part improved in some way, without realizing what the consequences are to the rest. Especially in a game like EVE where pretty much the entire economy is ran by players, a small change here could have massive impact over there.

    Personally I can't wait to see what happens when meta 0 stuff stops dropping, should make things interesting ;-)

    Nonsense. One of the unwritten rules of Slashdot is that in any discussion about religion we hate on those who are religious. And since Slashdot is US centric and the US is overwhelmingly Christian...well there you go.

    They are also an effective deterrent against biological attack, or rather they were until the moron at 1600 Penn Ave announced that we wouldn't use them in response to one.

    Honestly? Now that the nuclear threat is off the table suddenly a biological attack on the US would be a viable military strategy?

    I mean, basically there's 2 scenario's:

    1. An established nation uses biological warfare. In response the US sends the carriers, the marines, the tanks and kicks 7 kinds of living crap out of them. No nation on this planet can go up against the current US armed forces 1v1.

    2. A total fucking nutcase in a cave somewhere uses biological warfare. What good is a nuke going to do?

    If you stand on a street corner and yell back and forth at your neighbor across the street, is somebody standing 100 feet away from you with a tape recorder capturing your conversation violating your privacy?

    If it can be reasonably assumed that he is there to record the 2 of us...then yes he is. Of course the whole yelling across the street thing is a bit of a strawman, but if I am walking on the sidewalk with somebody else discussing at a normal tone of voice and some jackass follows us with a cam...then that is illegal.

    Honestly, the only ways I can think of would clash so badly with the US constitution and the mindset of the american people that it's pretty hopeless. A big part would be to somehow eliminate the corps from interfering with the election process, like we do over here. No donations, no ads, no interference, absolutely nothing. Allot fixed amounts of airtime and money for each candidate over a set period of time. No way in hell that would fly though...so as things stand, you're going to have the best politians money can buy.

    Honestly, considering the amount of spending power the big corps have these days I give it another 20-30 years before the US is a fullblown corporate run nation.

    I think the biggest problem of instant retrieval of everything is just the opposite - never being allowed to change without being called a flip-flopper.

    Have you ever noticed how the folks accused of flip-flopping never quite seem to remember the past? It's not like they come out and say "yes, I have changed my position on this issue and here is why". They conveniently forget their past position or even claim outright they never held that position and that's when Stewart nails them.

    Is it reasonable for a judge being confirmed in 2050 to have this denied via public opinion because he/she had a Facebook video of themselves with a group of friends doing something stupid when they were 15? Or 12?

    Considering that at that point there will be entire generations that have an internet legacy...because you guys will have become a little less uptight about it?

    Then again, by that time the US might be a full-blown theocorporacracy and it doesn't matter what the candidate did in the past so long as he believes in Jesus(tm), as brought to you by GM.

    You may not realize it, but you act very differently depending on whether you're with family, friends, another category of friends or complete strangers. You adopt different personalities for different situations without even consciously realizing it. You might think you have one life, but in truth there isn't anything linking them except for the fact that they share a single memory.

    You know, I did exactly that for a long time, and then one day decided to say fuck it.

    These days I am *me*, the early 30's slightly weird, relatively nice guy who likes to play computer games. At work, with the family, and elsewhere. I like *me*. Some other people do as well. Some others don't. Big deal.

    What is your alternative proposal? Centralized planning of the economy? Government ownership of the means of production? Price controls? Tariffs? Rationing? I can't help but think that all the folks on slashdot decrying a free market economy weren't alive to watch that thinking fail spectacularly in the USSR. And aren't paying attention to the countries still doing that stuff and their epic levels of fail now (USA included). Like freedom itself, there must be safeguards, but to throw the baby out with the bathwater is just stupid.

    Honestly? There's no area inbetween what the US does(the corps own the politicians, and you the people are their collective bitches but you're too fucking stupid to figure it out) and the former USSR(the politicians own the corps and the people were their bitches and they bloody well knew it)? Black and white much?

    Hmmm... As I reply to this it's marked as "Score 5, Insightful". However, there is nothing Insightful about it. I suppose it's insightful if you're only looking at the world through the lens of a "extreme left wing" set of glasses. Concepts like "left wing" and "right wing" are by definition relative. You can't say something like "meaningful metric" without qualifying it in someway. By your sig I'm guessing "meaningful metric" is defined as European Socialism == Moderate.

    You honestly don't have a clue, do you? Yes, the western-european countries are social-democrat, and when we look at the US we can't help but burst into laughter when we see the way you run things. Yet at the same time, I can pick from about a dozen companies to get my electricity from. I have access to more ISP's than I can shake a stick at.

    We promote the free market. We *like* the free market. The free market, when properly overseen by a semi-competent government, is absolutely awesome. What you guys do is *say* you want a free market, and then you turn around and set up a system that does nothing but screw the little man in favor of the big corps.

    If that is the case, then clearly teaching people that Free Enterprise is good and is the basis for the economic prosperity that people in this country have experienced would be a terrible thing. We must obviously teach children that only the State knows what's best for them and that they really should only work for the common good.

    Uhuh...we're not the ones that make little children swear a pledge of allegiance to the flag...we teach them about history, when we used to make a fortune shipping slaves to you guys, and how we pretty much invented all the stuff you're so proud of, like the stock market and corporations. We also teach them about the mistakes we made doing so and what we learned along the way.

    We're not socialists over here. We're in the middle, inbetween conservative and what you guys call liberal.

    Unless we are going to cling to the (intuitively satisfying; but rather silly) theory that humans have some sort of extra-material "free will" floating around in the aether, we pretty much have to concede that behavior has a biological basis. And, if something has a biological basis, the odds of it having a genetic and/or epigenetic component are pretty decent.

    When push comes to shove, we have a consciousness that allows us to take a step back, look at what we're doing and make rational decisions based on a number of factors. As much as the behavior that nature and/or nature may be ingrained in us, we have the capacity to override it.

    I'd humbly suggest that all those who feel they do not have this ability take up their rightful places in the animal kingdom and revoke their human rights immediately.

    I keep hearing that the GOP = Big Business, when big business have given more to the Democratic Party over time than to the GOP. While there is certainly support in business for the Republicans, there is certainly no shortage of support for Democrats in the halls of commerce, either. Goldman Sachs is practically the in-house fundraiser for the DNC. Each of the largest megabanks... Citi, Bank of America, etc.. has very close ties to major Democratic politicians like Chuck Schumer, Chris Dodd, and ... I think you get the picture.

    In other news, US government is corrupt to the bone.
