I doubt anyone will dispute that it is right now, but who's to say they're not cutting themselves short in the long run? For all you know 10 years from now Mexico decides they really want that Canadian lumber and big boats, just outside US territorial waters to avoid random searches, will sail north and south all the time while waving to the people peering through the tiny holes in the big concrete wall on the shore. The world economy is constantly shifting and at some point the US will have to make some changes.

Not unless you add the babyboom generation as a top priority to the target list. Pretty soon they're all gonna be retired and someone's gotta pay for that. Killing off the generation that'll still be productive for the next 40 years won't make things any better....hmmm, reinstate military service, only this time call on folks that are 65+? Congress also spends billions of dollars on the Interstate Highways, yet they don't monopolize over-the-road trucking; truckers use the infrastructure and theoretically pay taxes to do so (levied on diesel fuel). We all know that they don't come close to paying for the damage they do to the infrastructure...but that's a different discussion.

One could argue that the highways repay themselves in far more ways than just that of the levy on fuels used to cross them. Transport = business = tax.

If you have a proportional representation system, it's much easier for extreme groups to develop and thrive -- remember, the National Front got nearly 20% of the vote in France and their leader made it into the second round of the election. And they're like freaken Nazis.

The voting for the NF was a clear sign by the french public that they had had it with the state of affairs. That is how voters represent themselves, remember? By voting. The fact that 20% of a country got up and basically gave the government the finger by saying "look mate, even this total freak is more competent than you are" is admirable in itself. Ofcourse Chirac easily won the second round and nothing effectively changed.

Now try to imagine 20% of the american public getting up, giving the government the finger and voting "fringe party x". Unlikely that would ever happen though, americans being as indoctrinated as they are.
