According to their features section for 10.0 most SATA controllers are supported providing you're not going to try to RAID them.

OK, no, not bothering with RAIDing anything here. :-)

Of course if your luck is anything like mine, your chipset will be the only one not supported. It's a free download so it won't cost you to find out, and who knows, you just might really like it. I gave up on SUSE after they let their implementation of Gnome go to hell (version 7) and been with Mandrake ever since. Hella nice distribution. Just the thing for getting back into it. Cheers!

Yes, I'm fearing I'll have that kind of luck. But you're right in that it's free to try! I think I'll give it (and Partition Magic, heh) a shot and see how it's like. I liked what I saw in Knoppix before it crashed on me. :-P Things have really moved forward since Red Hat 5.x or so. :-D

  6. How is the Serial ATA support? on Mandrakelinux 10.0 Community Ready For Download · · Score: 2, Interesting

How well does Linux 2.6.3, which distro builds on, support Serial ATA drives?

I'm using a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus @ 160 GB. The mainboard is a Abit IS7 and I *think* the SATA controller is from SiliconImage.

When I recently tried out Knoppix, the entire OS (or at least the GUI) froze whenever I tried to access the auto-detected hard drive. However, it's based on 2.4.x and I have a feeling it was due to my SATA drive and lack of controller support.

I'm relatively new to Linux after a longish break, but was thinking about picking up on it again. But I don't really want to start by messing around with SATA drivers, as it seems to be both a rather complex task for a newbie and a risky task too, as I'm dealing with low-level stuff that I fear could corrupt data if done wrong.

  7. We also have this levy in Sweden on Apple Sued in France for iPod Music Royalties · · Score: 4, Informative
Some information (in english) about it:

    - Activities of COPYSWEDE
(scroll down the page for information about the blank tape levies)

    - Blank Tape Levy (PDF document with more detail)

    Here's a quote summarizing it:

"Each year private individuals record a great amount of music, films and TV programmes on blank videocassettes, audiocassettes and CDs. Such widespread copying is a way of benefiting from the work of others without directly paying for it. This results in considerable losses for those who earn their living by creating music, films, and TV/radio programmes.

This is the reason for the regulations governing a blank tape levy in 26 k of the Swedish Copyright Act. The levy is designed to compensate, to some extent, the authors, performers or producers for the increasing amount of private copying of copyright protected material such as music, films and TV/radio programmes.

Importers and manufacturers are obliged to pay a blank tape levy of SEK 0.02 per recordable minute up to a maximum of SEK 6 per unit of blank audio or video media. The size of the levy is determined by law. According to 26 k the collection of the blank tape levy shall be done collectively by the representative organisations"

I personally find these levies very unfair as they're added to all recordable media and you're paying for the music and movie industry even when purchasing CD-R's to archive school work.

I also wonder how they decided what the fees should be. Wouldn't surprise me if they're much much higher (adds about 30% to the CD-R costs right now) than they should be, as people would probably not purchase two identical CD's very often if they were impossible to copy. Hence, in all these cases, they aren't losing money if these customers are copying today for convenience of playing a CD in the car stereo, etc. Usually, media companies and organizations like these totally ignore this important fact.

They should also force them to make their software *uninstallable* like... well, their competing applications.

I'm fine with that. MS should be happy since they can include all their shit. They'll even get a separate CD and space to include More Junk Than Ever Before. Mozilla users will be happy because they can avoid IE, etc. Only problem here might be the feeling that you're paying for more than you'll use, but that's not a new problem at least. Not really. Windows XP was over 2000 though. There are some huge underlying changes -- not a 100% rewrite -- but some major rewrites anyway. For example is the Windows programming API switched from Win32 to WinFX, and a whole lot retrofitted for the .NET framework for managed code.

    - the character acting/development: maybe not bad, but the actors weren't given much to work with at times
    - the script to the last movie: too scattered, trying to cram everything in without ever really coming together neatly in a form palatable for a movie
    - the pacing: considering what was cut, there were some ridiculously ponderous bits and other parts where whole swathes of the book were glossed over in a couple of seconds
    - the feeling that, by the end, Jackson is just telling someone elses story rather than presenting us with a piece of work in its own right. This combined with decisions to reduce Saruman's role and symbolism hurt the broader themes of the trilogy for me.

I'll wait for the Extended Edition and its 40 extra minutes before saying anything about ROTK. The EE's for the former parts were excellent IMHO and often added "calmer" scenes when there was much action in the movies, to balance things.

I think the Theatre Editions are mostly just unfortunate side effects of giving the audience (and the movie company) something easier to swallow and not how PJ truly intended the movies to be watched...
