Don't worry, never said a successful landing was a failure. We're talking about the entire platform as a whole. It has failed it's design specs. It can't be launched anywhere near as often as it was intended to be. It costs insanely more than it was ever supposed to. It's more dangerous and less useful than it was supposed to be. I think what most people see as the biggest failure is that all of these are well known issues, and have been for a very very long time now, but nothing has been done to change the state of things. No solutions for these well known problems. No where to go from here at this point. That, at least in my mind, is NASA's biggest failing with the platform. Any car manufacturer would have cut their losses as R&D and lessons learned when the problems were first recognized, and moved forward applying those lessons to a new, better, more viable solution.
Unfortunately, NASA is funded by tax money...it's basically been a bottomless pit that simply could and would not be allowed to exist in such a fashion in any sort of commercial entity.
There have been alternative ways to move forward for decades now...but they haven't. That is a huge failure. We KNOW we can do better...look at how much we achieved leading up to the shuttle program. It's time to move in a new direction, and has been for a very long time.
Ford could have stuck to the pinto. Many trips in a pinto would have been successes. But it would be hard to say that Ford wouldn't have been a failure if they had done so. (Note: I say nothing about Ford's apparent state of success or failure at this point! Take the anecdote as is please and read nothing more in to it!)
Really? Cause I'm sure we all thought they were going to throw it out of the shuttle just for kicks.
Is it me or is just about everything flying over most peoples heads in this thread?
The point being that some people are unsure whether cultural items should be making trips to space even if the intent is for them to come back...considering the fact that NASA doesn't have a perfect track record in the 'and back' department.
Now, personally, I don't really care either way. I'm more concerned about the people we send up coming back myself. To that end, I find it a bit disconcerting that those involved in ensuring this are diverting even a minute amount of energy towards some prop from a movie making said trip...
Or you could just try yourself and see what comes up.
Here, I did it for you. Results for:
shuttle program failures : 1 - 10 of about 1,930,000 shuttle program successes : 1 - 10 of about 1,780,000
Yes, they are close, but 2 points: There are certainly more hits on failure, and if you read through the matches returned it becomes very apparent that the failure results in bulk reflect the failure of the entire program, whereas the success results are minor achievements...shuttle landed successfully, robot worked successfully...and worse, even on the first page of results for successes, there are articles about the shuttle program being doomed etc.
In other words, the preponderance of available evidence suggests that the shuttle program is not seen as a glowing success by any stretch of the imagination.
Now you're ready to go and find some of the facts involved. And the linked wiki article is a very good place to start.
Every plot of land in North America that can grow corn is growing corn. The reason it's not ALL corn is if you only grow corn year after year, after a few years your corn doesn't grow worth a crap. Thus crop rotation. Standard fare in corn country is corn, white beans and wheat, rotated yearly. Thus, only 1/3 of the land used for growing corn is ever actually growing corn at any given time.
I'm sorry, I'm sure I remembered there being 3 Playstation's...end:sarcasm
Oh, you're being pedantic, suggesting that the PS2 is _not_ in it's end of life cycle and hasn't born this out? When in fact it is, and has, just like the PS before it.
Best games for the PS1 came out after the PS2 was released...PS1's end of life cycle. Best games for the PS2 have or are coming out...after the PS3 was released...PS2's end of life cycle.
Never said any of that. Wouldn't suggest anyone should buy a PS3 yet actually. I'm just stating historical trends that show that by this time next year, the PS3 should be a decent price with a nice library of quality games available.
If history repeats itself, the PS3 will be a success, and I'll likely buy one then. If it doesn't...then it doesn't. But anyone that already bought a PS3 and is ticked or surprised that there aren't a ton of games yet really shouldn't be surprised.
Heck, what was there for killer games for the PS2 during the first year? GTA 3 sold that system basically, but it was quite a while after before there were many other must have games available. Now of course, there is a huge PS2 library.
So here's hoping history repeats itself, and if not...no biggie.
Yep, certainly do hope that this time next year there are lots of worthwhile games for the PS3. I do have hope as Sony has never failed on that in the past...alas, there is a first time for everything...
For the most part, the 360 just has a big list of shooters in the lineup. Without a doubt, if that's your bag, the 360 is your kit and will probably remain so.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying either is better. Actually personally, I have neither a 360 or a PS3...my PS2 is keeping me plenty occupied still. But I do expect that in a year or so there will be enough games that I want and assuming Blu-Ray is still looking to be dominant at that time, I'll likely get a PS3. But I have no interest in a 360 personally no matter what happens. My PC easily satisfies my gaming needs for shooters.
I find it funny the number of people that are happy with their 360, but keep complaining about the PS3...if the 360 does it for you, enjoy and don't worry about what the PS3 may or may not have.
Yes, but we're just coming into the first real release season for the PS3. Over the next year that will change. People conveniently forget just how long the 360 has already been out for, and that many xBox games were released on the 360 instead of the xbox. Sony has NEVER had a lot of games out in the first year for a new console. Those that know this know that waiting another 6 months to a year will result in likely a cheaper console purchase, and more game options...and in the meantime, thoroughly enjoying the last and best games to be released on the PS2. (End of console lifecycle games are traditionally the best on sony consoles)
Now, if there aren't lots of quality games to choose from by this time next year, there will be problems without a doubt.
I had a friend who could actually run Windows ME. It was the most amazing thing that I ever witnessed even though it didn't really behave all that different from 2 copies of Windows ME not running.
Do you really think Google missed that point when that is the entire point? I suspect you're possibly missing something, and if not, one would have to assume that Google isn't actually intending on placing a bid, but is keeping quiet to attempt to game the telcos into future agreements with Google beforehand...who knows really though? What I do know is that Google is not stupid, and they most certainly understand what is going on and most certainly have a plan here.
Censorship priorities are in this order (in North America anyways): 1) Nudity 2) Language 3) Violence
That's right, it's worse for a kid to see a breast, than it is to hear the word fuck, than it is to see a violent murder. Ratings systems allow children access to #3 much sooner than #2, and then finally #1 once you're an adult.
Scary system where we'd rather our children see murders than hear words or see other people as they are born.
But this is the choir here, I do realize that. It just never ceases to blow my mind.
Sounds more like you want to live off the rich yourself.
I'm sorry, but you must think you're living in some other country. This is the USA. It's called capitalism. Good luck with your socialist anti-entitlement slant mmkay?
How would it be remotely fair if the only time in someones life when they DIDN'T get screwed by the government yet again were to be WHEN THEY DIED.
God forbid a tax break upon death of someone.
Look, I understand 'The Way Things Are', but why oh WHY are you so obviously pissed off at the idea that this might not be right? That this might be mean and cruel. That this might be the ultimate kick in the nuts?
Did you know that family estates are STOLEN by the government this way? It's happened many times that a family estate that has been in the family for a couple hundred years is taken by the government upon the last owner's death, because the people it was willed to couldn't cough up ~35% of it's 'perceived market value at that time'?
Tell me with a straight face that that is not completely and utterly fucked up.
Who are you and what do you do that you have such a 'Please Mr. Government, take this, take this too, PLEASE take your share, then take it again and again and again'.
Taxes are a fact of life in our society, but should there not be limits?
HOw about this, maybe the government should take another 30% every time you take money out of the bank. You've done nothing with it since you put it in the bank. Obviously the government deserves that money, right?
Where's the line, and WHY is it drawn there?
Stop and think for half a second would you? No WONDER crap like this national ID card is going to fly, people don't THINK for themselves anymore.
No, you're right. Silly people choosing to not live in cities, what ever are they thinking.
But let me ask you this: Do you like to eat?
And that's just the first point that comes to mind.
Threat? Hardly, wasn't even remotely phrased as such. Now if you'd like to talk reality...

Note to whomever chose to mod that Troll: It's A Joke.
Um, I was watching Columbia when it burned up, as was just about everyone else in school at the time in North America. Just saying...
Or you could just try yourself and see what comes up.

(Missed that bit of sarcasm I see)

They are not synonyms.
Read that again, it does not state that proof == evidence, not even remotely.
Er, wouldn't really call him a leader. Loner, recluse, scientist with a vengeance, sure whatever. But leader? No, not really.
Go back 20 years. Ever seen a black strip overlayed across a pair of nipples when a movie was being played on tv? What was that called again?
Yes, you've got it. Those nipples were censored.
Censoring is simply filtering, it is not necessarily imposing ultimate control over all of some particular thing.
Or worse, what about hear words!!!
Censorship priorities are in this order (in North America anyways):

Just an excuse to post a link to Wired's massive advertising campaign for it. I'm sure there's a kickback in there somewhere...
Yep, but that's the rated theatrical version, not the true porn version. (Noticed that myself, and then took a closer look...very different releases)
He says on /. in reply to a thread about video games...
Sounds more like you want to live off the rich yourself.
I'm sorry, but you must think you're living in some other country. This is the USA. It's called capitalism. Good luck with your socialist anti-entitlement slant mmkay?
Ahh, so now it comes out. Nice of you to mention your bias a wee bit sooner.
How would it be remotely fair if the only time in someones life when they DIDN'T get screwed by the government yet again were to be WHEN THEY DIED.
