  1. ad blockers are no fun on Why Do You Block Ads? · · Score: 1

The other day I was writing some php that displayed random images from a local directory and linked them to different parts in my site. I thought my script was broken because I couldn't get the images to display. I checked the source of the html from the browser and the IMG tag wasn't even coming up. I was puzzled for a second and then double checked my code just to make sure everything was alright. A small voice suddenly whispered in my ear to disable norton internet security. Immediately after disabling Norton Internet Security my IMG tags came back. This really rubbed me the wrong way.

  2. Re:With free webmail being all the rage these days on 30Gigs Web Mail Launches Into Beta · · Score: 1

You should check out www.fastmail.fm. They have a wide variety of domains to choose from. Or if you would prefer to host your own domain you simply point your domain's MX records to their servers(I use three of their smtp servers for redudancy two are in the US and one is in europe). You then simply use their web interface to bind the domain to your account(so they know how to relay the mail to). I've been using it for several years and they have an incredible uptime record. If they ever do go down they send me an email a week in advance saying something along the lines of being down for several minutes to do maintenance. I pay $40 a year for email and get:
    -No Advertisements
    -2 gigs of space
    -imap and pop
-virus scanning and spam filtering(they might be using clamAv and SpamAssasin)
-very customizable rules interface(You can use their interface or write your own sieve scripts.)
    -Email forwarding(even via SMS)
-File Storage(Accessible via web interface or webdav)
-Subdomain(Great for wildcarding---fast and easy to create throw away email addresses)
-Customizable CSS stylesheets to customize the look and feel of your mailbox to your own needs. They have a whole bunch of prebuilt ones you can choose from as well. Personally I like Slipstream Pro
-Multiple Personalities(Useful for managing multiple email addresses with one mailbox. EXAMPLE: I receive all my ebay email at ebay@my.domain.com. This email is filtered into a folder called ebay. I assign an ebay personality to that folder. When I browse my ebay folder and reply the email goes out as from ebay@my.domain.com not from my default account.)
-You can download all your attachments in an email as a compressed file instead of individually downloading all of them.
-You can transfer attachments to your file storage for easy access
-You can download all your emails as a compressed file for personal archiving(I tested this and was able to download my entire inbox, 160mb worth of stuff, and import it into my mail client on my computer)
-Phishing Protection: Disable links in emails that point appear to point to sites inconsistent with the link text. This can be turned on or off.
-WebBug Protection: Disables display of images from the web in html emails, to prevent spammers tracking whether you open spam; also disables forms. This can be turned on or off.

The list goes on and on...People laugh at me for paying for email....I don't mind paying for a service that actually does what I want it to do. Check it out. They have a guest account which is free. It doesn't have much storage space and a few of the advanced features are disabled but it will still give you a taste of what it offers.

4 Years ago I bought a Sony Clie that still rivals the quality, resolution, of todays PDAs. The problem I had with it was the lack of hacks for it because of how locked down they made it. They didn't make it easy to be hacked and all the software for it was proprietary. They didn't release an SDK or anything. People want to hack their toys. The PSP is hackable and consumers find this kind of intriguing. Although Sony is fighting to lock the consumer out of doing this. I've observed that if people can do more with their toy than what is intended by the manufacturer this usually drives sales. Sony still hasn't figured this out and is setting themselves up to lose the media format war just as how they lost out keeping up in the PDA market(The completely stopped manufacturing their whole PDA line)

Free phone calls to friends and family anywhere in the United States can be made at Cingular stores during normal store hours. The calling stations are available to anyone who simply needs to use a phone.

The company has also set up a free mobile calling station at the Cajundome in Lafayette where thousands of evacuees are being housed.

I'm really interested to know what kind of hardware you play WoW with. I play WoW with a 5900XT video card, 1 gig of ram, and a 2.2 ghz processor. I have no problems with Ironforge at all. Most people blame the Ironforge bottleneck on blizzards servers when the problem usually exists on the players home computer. However ever since patch 1.6 something must have been added into the code that has caused intermittent cpu thrashing on my home computer. My friend runs WoW on a super beefed computer and has no problems at all.

As far as I can remember the term "lag" meant lengthy response times from the server. If I'm not mistaken this is usually not the case at all. The thing that is often causing lengthy reponse times from the server while in Ironforge would be the client side computer's lack of resources which causes an inability to process server responses fast enough.

Basically the RIAA is using circumstancial evidence to make their case. It's like the police rounding up people who wear a t-shirt that says "I am a murderer"

Even though it's pretty unlikely that a file is going to be named something other than what it is the RIAA is going to court with the assumption that the files are there copyrighted work. That's assuming a lot.

People are innocent until proven guilty and not the other way around. And under what authority can the RIAA claim that someone is distributed their copyrighted works? I mean how is this verified. How could this evidence even be admitted in court? Again it's unlikely that the RIAA is going to falsely incriminate by claiming they were able to download a file. Do the courts just blindly believe the RIAA just because they are of course the RIAA!!

I'm not the biggest fan of Microsoft but what everyone fails to acknowledge is one of the main reasons why Microsoft patents in the first place. This reason is that they want to protect themselves from getting charged huge liscensing fees for a product they've spent millions of dollars developing. They don't patent to make money. Microsoft isn't chasing everyone around with an iron fist looking for patent violations. They are actually very lenient unlike many other companies that look for profit from patent violations. In many cases it also beneficial to have Microsoft hold patents on ideas that would have probably simultaneously been developed by thousands of independent companies.
