He may not have played Daikatana, but I have. I found it to be a complete waste of time and money. Maybe, if he had spent a few more years on it, he could have made a game that could actually compete.
Despite this, I would still like to take a class with John Romero. He played a big part in a lot of my favorite games. I still see him as an alright coder, though some of his designs could have been better. Not only that, but how many opportunities do you get to take classes on game programming by people who have done things more complex than simple Mario clones? It is a rare thing, indeed.
Oh. FYI, I didn't pick to rant about the NSA, as the great grandparent post suggested, because I might want to work there one day. I'm studying Comp. Sci. and Math, and have always been fascinated by cryptography and foreign languages.
I'm not sure how much responsibility we have for global warming. Even the scientists out there don't know for sure. I do know, however, that our summers have been getting longer the last few years. Whether it's just a natural trend or a human-caused phenomena is yet to be seen. I hope it stops, though.
Let's go to Mars, just in case. I'd hate to be stuck drinking powdered milk for the rest of my life.:)
I chose to pick on welfare because of the parent post. There are plenty of jobs for everyone in the United States. Some of them suck, yes. Some of them pay minimum wage. If you're starving, maybe you should swallow your pride and get a job at Mickey D's - I've never seen a McDonald's that wasn't hiring, and they are an equal opportunity employer, so if they discriminate against you, sue *them* - before you reach into the pockets of other people.
I'm not an advocate of letting people starve. There's just no such thing as a free lunch. If you're capable of going out to rob someone, as in your example, you should be capable of working at McDonald's as well.
No, I'm not a fan of Rush Limbaugh, and I'm not rich, as some might assume from my viewpoints. I make less than 20,000 USD a year, and pay all my own tuition, but I work my ass off at a minimum wage job to do it. Can you really blame me if I have reservations against people taking my hard-earned money to support someone who refuses to do the same?
What you are forgetting is that America is not a democracy. It is a republic. Our founding fathers realized that the average Joe isn't thinking about what is best for the country in the long run, but rather what's best for Joe at the moment he votes.
Unfortunately, their solution to the problem, electoral colleges, turns out to be a handy target for large corporations. There are less votes to be paid for.
Taking trips to Mars is a very worthwhile cause. There may come a time when Earth becomes uninhabitable. We currently have all of our eggs in one basket. In the event of an asteroid/comet striking Earth, the colonization of Mars could prevent complete destruction of humanity. If the Sun were to die out, or worse, blow up, even Mars wouldn't be safe, but we will, without a doubt, learn many things about space travel by travelling there.
I'm sure most of you agree that the fate of humanity as a whole is more important than the fate of the few "starving Americans". Welfare is a silly concept, anyway. The people who receive it are either incapable or unwilling to contribute anything to society, so why should society reward them? The rest of us have to work for our living. Why shouldn't they? I know I would much rather have my tax dollars go to something like the Mars trip than into the mouth of someone I don't even know.
I'm sorry if you disagree. I don't mean to troll or start a flamewar. If I do, I'm sorry, but that's just the way I see it.
Someone should duel Judge Judy. She definately deserves it. Just smack her with a glove and scream, "I demand satisfaction! I challenge you........ TO A DUEL!"
- Dave, you know I can't allow you to eat that. - Oh yeah, fridge? Well... up yours! - That was not very nice, Dave. You make me feel unwanted. Self-destruct sequence activating...
They finally did get rid of COBOL as a mandatory course, and they're finally offering C++ now. The mainframe stuff is mostly for graduates now. I'm not extremely impressed with the Computer Science department here, but hey, at least you can supplement it with other things. (Unlike, say, DeVry, where I was unfortunate enough to attend for a sem^H^H^H^H trimester)
I'm currently triple-majoring in Computer Science, Physics, and Math. NIU isn't really that bad if you're a masochist like me.
Northern Illinois University was considering implementing Linux in its computer labs. It even got to the point that they hired a specialist to start working on implementing it. Unfortunately, there were some problems with the highers-up, and the project got axed.
Now they're moving to XP, but sticking with Novell for logins and application distribution. Considering the fiasco they had involving Novell's ZenWorks during the Spring semester, I'm not quite sure which part of that combination is the weakest link.
Cats can survive falls from very high places better than they can from places that aren't as high. The reason they can survive the high falls is because, instinctively, they spread out their bodies when they fall. This increases their surface area, and hence, decreases their terminal velocity. It's like a parachute, but obviously on a much smaller scale. Unfortunately for the cat, for smaller heights, they don't have enough time to "open their parachutes", and they hit the ground with a splat.
You're right. Nintendo did earn my respect and loyalty back in the NES days -- then they threw it all out the window when they put out that junk heap called the Nintendo 64.
There were only 4 games that I could remember that were worth playing on it, and the rest were stupid things like Banjo Kazooey, and the hundreds of Mario clones. I liked Mario back in the day, but there is only so much that a guy can take...
Take a look at the Gameboy. At first, the games were interesting.. Then came the cheap Game Boy Pocket, and with it, Pokemon. It's amazing what a silly fad like that can do to profits. It's just too bad for Nintendo that it didn't die out. Most games for Gameboy nowadays are Pokemon or clones of it, and/or remakes of games most people already own.
Remaking old games is all well and good, but something should be added to them besides just putting a done-to-death character in a 3D world and making him collect a new type of item...
If you like Nintendo -- Good for you. But don't pretend that they didn't earn their place in people's hearts as Kidtendo. Maybe they'll be smart and focus more on their Metroid line. (I think it's their last hope:))
Yeah... sure... So that's why my TV Tuner card didn't work for in XP for months until the vendor came out with a special driver for it. (I had tried the one that they had for 2k, it didn't work). In theory, the drivers may be compatible, but in practice, they don't seem to be at all.
So you'd rather have to rely on a crack to be able to play every game that already uses that? SafeDisc is used on a lot of the Windows games that are out there, and I know that I would prefer to be able to play them right out of the box.
Maybe you should re-read this thread. US Slashdot readers, always so quick to denounce their evil government taking away their rights to a Linux DVD player via the DMCA are almost united in their rage that anyone should criticise their saintly government over it's perfect foreign policy.
I think we're mostly angered by people stereotyping us. The average American has no control over what the government does. We don't have a direct democracy like in Switzerland, so the American People don't get the chance to stop things that we don't want to happen. Hell, some would say we don't even have a democracy at all. The concept of "electoral colleges" has screwed even that up. Just look at our last election.
Even if we get who we want into office as our president (who will go on to have, though not by design, way more power than anyone should in a true system of checks and balances, IMO), we are stuck with him for four years, unless he gets impeached -- which is rare, and shouldn't need to be counted on. A lot can happen in four years, and the people who run this country don't need to worry about public opinion except on election years.
If you lived here, you'd probably already have noticed that the American Government does not really care anymore what its people think. The DMCA, which you mentioned in your post, is a glaring example of that.
Perfect foreign policy? I don't know anyone who would say that. We don't even have perfect domestic policy. Our government has made its share of mistakes. But they're not quite the butchers that the original post made them out to be, either.
I did not send the troops to kill people in Somalia. My government did, and I wasn't even old enough to vote when they did it. Not that it would have mattered, because there was no vote involved anyway.
So, in short, we Americans are not against criticism of our government, but we are against the idea that the American Government and the American People are the same thing that we take offense. After all, saying that *all* Americans are willing to exploit whole countries just to save a buck is no better than saying that *all* Muslims are crazy fanatics that want to crash airplanes into buildings.
Sorry for the rant.. I'm just sick and tired of being villified for things I had nothing to do with.
I have a better question for you. Why not? It's not like Microsoft has ever hesitated to add useless features to their products. The flight simulator hidden in an old version of Excel is a perfect example of this.
Then they should take ESPN out of the Basic Cable package. I don't want it, never have. If I want to see sports, I'll go out and play them. Let the people who want it pay for it!
I think it's ridiculous to pay $230 for cable. I don't care how many extras they add. I probably won't ever use anything more than a few channels of it (mostly the Sci-Fi channel, some others). Even the $50 a month I pay now is too much. (But I suck it up and pay their price because I want those channels and it's not *blatantly* overpriced, like they're planning.)
If they seriously do this, I'll go with the competition, and then buy 4 new video games or a high end hard drive each month with the money I save. Plain and simple.

You break it on the corner of a table. I don't see how that works with something harder than titanium, though. :)
Nice troll, yourself.

Hey, I see users not knowing how to download as a good thing. It means more bandwidth for people with IQ's higher than Forrest Gump's. :)

DUH! Duck and cover. Didn't you pay attention in school back in the Cold War days?

Yeah, you're right. It's not bad... for elevator music...
Maybe he works for the government, like I do. They seem to frown on efficiency. :)

He wins the right to keep his page up at that domain, and, within minutes, we bring it back down. Now that's irony.

I shouldn't have to wait in line. The whole concept of FilePlanet ("Let's get rid of all mirrors in favor of 3 slow central servers!") is ridiculous.
But those blue cubicle walls just make it seem so much smaller.
