It's easy to write a really slow program that uses practically no RAM. It's all about balance. I don't see how you are proving your point on speed with a memory footprint. (That only works sometimes.)
They are effectively being detained by customs. Because of this, they are unable to make it to their trial in order to defend themselves. They may not be in police custody, but they are being effectively barred from the court by another branch of the government that is trying them. That is where I see the rite of Habeas Corpus coming in.
What ever happened to the rite of Habeas Corpus? Since this has to do with the DMCA, it would have to be a criminal trial, and thus the trial cannot go on without him. If the DMCA allows prosecutors to violate due process, then it shouldn't be very long before it is deemed unconstitutional.
It might have been alright if they had waived their rights voluntarily, but they are being held against their will. If the trial is allowed to go on, the results should be very easily appealed. That is, if it is not deemed a mistrial.
While I am not a lawyer, a little bit of common sense goes (or used to, anyway) a long way.
Yeah. Maybe if we get even smaller they'll be able to make them for trolls. Although that would involve going to a scale even smaller than the one used by quantum physics...
Or maybe.. just maybe.. you learned by watching your parents drive while you were a kid, and only thought that it took less than 5 minutes to learn later.
The cans must not be pure aluminum. They are most likely an alloy containing small amounts of magnetic metals (my guess would be iron). All you need is a little, with enough current.
In fact, I know it won't be any good. That's why I never buy tickets for any football games. (American or otherwise) The best part about that, though, is that I don't *HAVE* to buy a ticket for them to get my money. They just take it in the form of taxes when the government subsidizes their team and/or stadium. There is way too much tax money going into government subsidies for professional sports teams, and way too much tuition money going into college sports.
Sorry I went a little off topic, but he started it, I swear!;)
I'm against Microsoft on PC because they're a bunch of monopolist pigs. But in the console market, they're the underdog. Three cheers for XBox. Go, XBox, go!;)
At least the USA allows its people to search for the truth. They may try to obscure it by posting what they want you to think is the truth over and over again, but they let you look for it. China won't even let its people use Google.
The US has some bad policies, I admit, (/s/some/lots of) but the people here are still allowed more freedoms than the people in China are. That is, of course, until Bush and Co. discover that they can make a bigger profit by taking them away.,,
Now they can run their firewall cheaper and more efficiently, without worrying about getting help from outside sources. They should have a really easy time oppressing their people from here on out.
But you can run all of your legacy apps, and non-crippled, open source versions of all the others. Palladium would be a non-issue. Developers in *truly* free countries could violate the DMCA and its European partner with impunity and share the source with us slaves.
Why can't they just program it to use open standards? They don't support other video cards than nVidia GeForce and Ati Radeon.
They can't program it to use open standards because, in order to run any faster than a legless sloth, it needs to use things for which there are no open standards. OpenGL 1.x is a getting long in the tooth, and the extensions used are used because they are needed. I'm tired of people not seeing that.
With a few exceptions, UT 2003 is basically a graphical upgrade to the original UT, which will run on almost any card. If you want a game that will run on any old hardware, play the original UT and get a mod to tweak the weapons to match UT 2003. UT 2003 is a next generation game, which requires next generation hardware. Unfortunately, no matter how good your hardware is, it still needs drivers to run. NVIDIA and ATI are the only companies that have released drivers for their next-gen products so far. Matrox is coming, but they haven't come yet. There aren't that many other companies making graphics hardware that will run UT 2003 anyway.
If other hardware manufacturers don't want to release Linux drivers, then they shouldn't be surprised when people stop buying their hardware to use in Linux boxes...
Language is meant to communicate. If someone can't spell things well enough for the point to get across to the teacher, (which was the point of this article) they deserve to be penalized.
Languages evolve, but that is not their purpose. To some extent, standardization of a language is necessary. Without language standardization, languages split off completely. This isn't necessarily bad if the majority of the population agrees on the changes, but mostly only kids, and a small percentage of them, are using "L33T-sp34k".
Societies don't let children dictate changes to policies. They shouldn't, or we'd be going to war over silly things like candy bars or pathetic insults like "doody-head". We'd have "goo goo, ga ga" become an integral part of our speech. We already have enough trouble with our foolish governments, we don't need more from foolish children.
I hate skinnable interfaces. They never have a standard, non-bloated version of the interface available. Let's talk, for example, about your favorite, Trillian. I only connect to ICQ and AIM with it, but for some reason, it takes up 15 MB of RAM anyway. The skinnable interface only allows you to replace bitmaps with other bitmaps, which are put into place according to XML.
All I really need in an IM client is a listbox, incoming and outgoing textboxes, and a send button. Even taking into account the memory required for the implementation of the messaging protocol, the memory needed shouldn't even come close to 15 MB. I'm not impressed by the "niftiness" of the skins for Trillian. They're mostly junk. Oh, and IIRC, the skins most downloaded from Trillian's skins site are the ones that match the basic OS's scheme. Go figure.
Sorry for the rant, but, IMO, skinnable apps should have a non-skinned mode too, that doesn't store hundreds of pointless pixmaps or parse long XML files every time a window opens or resizes... I used Trillian for a while because there was nothing much better, but now GAIM is going to work as nicely on my Windows desktop as on my Linux one.

Most of the boats actually sunk because of the methane in the water, not because of explosions caused by the methane in the air. Boats float because their specific gravity, which is proportional to density, is less than that of water. The methane in the water causes bubbles to form, which significantly lowers the density of the water and causes the boat to sink.
It's not just the function of the software that matters. A lot of schools would use Open Source software, if it weren't for a little thing called mind share. Most of the companies out there are going to use Windows/Office, and the role of the educational system is just that: to educate.
If Little Jimmy learns how to use Star Office or AbiWord in school, how is that going to help him when he goes to work for a company that requires him to use MS Office? They serve the same purpose, but the differences are very important conceptually.
If all you need to do is print off an essay, then pay for Office. If you intend to learn or teach skills for the future workplace, you should not be held back by licensing issues.

It's good to hear that other people have had success with the Atkins diet. I, myself, weighed 290 lbs. at the beginning of my senior year in high school. I had high blood pressure, and after going to an endocrinologist, I was found to have an excess of insulin in my blood stream.
I did some research, and found a pseudo Atkins diet. It involves eating exactly 3 meals a day, 2 of which were very low on carbohydrates. The third meal of the day could last up to an hour, and allowed me to stuff my face with impunity.
So, after about 5 months of stuffing my face more than usual, and indulging my beef jerky addiction (yum), I had lost 75 pounds. Two years later, the weight is still off.
Of course, your mileage may vary, but it definitely worked for me.
