Yesterday I spent $20 on a domain name (ten years!) that I don't even know if I'll ever use. If I do use it (I have plans), I doubt I'll ever put any ads on it. Websites I run don't have ads. I do it all for free.

Anyway, bitcoins is the perfect solution to this whole micropayment thing. It is decentralized, no costs to pay to a middle-man, you pay as little as you want (down to tiny fractions of a cent if you want). You don't need to sign up for some sketchy website, handover your details or anything. (Well, unless you buy some bitcoins, but if you get them from other sources, like donations, it's fine.)

I was going to start a micropayment company, and then I realized that actually bitcoins is perfectly sufficient. It does everything I could possibly want.

He is a hero because he leaked information that has lead to the downfall over governments that were fundamentally undemocratic. He is a hero because in his position he saw a way to try and right a wrong, and he took that way.

You are worried about how Manning managed to leak all this embarrassing material, you should be more worried about why those in the chain of command who committed crimes (that have been exposed thanks to Manning) are not being prosecuted. Are you one of the ones who say the government can do no wrong? Or if they did, they must have a good reason? Defense of wrong doing is itself a problem that needs to be fixed.

Unfortunately there's no, "you're an idiot" mod, so I'll leave you unmoderated and tell you directly. If Manning really did leak this information then yes, he's a hero. But he's not a traitor, and he deserves no punishment. He deserves what any hero does, but unfortunately he's getting what heroes too often get. Instead of praise and thanks for highlighting evil, and exposing dark secrets, he's getting punished for it. But that's to be expected, what evil organization actually likes being exposed as evil when they try and pretend otherwise?

People like to say, "oh, you broke the law, accept the consequences", but fuck that shit. If the law is wrong (and any law that forbids a person to revel wrong doing on the scale reveled by Manning, is wrong), then it is your duty to break it. And then to evade injustice. E.g. the mafia come and say, "we'll protect your shop from someone firebombing it", but if you reject their offer, you still have the right to defend your shop yourself from firebombing (which will come from the mafia). The mafia are the government, demanding you accept their laws or face the consequences they decided on.

  5. Impossible to enforce on EU To Vote On Proposal That Could Ban All Online Pornography · · Score: 5, Informative

Two words only are needed to show why any attempt to ban anything on the Internet is doomed to fail. Both words are proper nouns. The first is "Tor", an onion routing system that means it can be virtually impossible to connect an end user with a particular server. Moreover, there are "hidden" services that do not even show on the main web. The second is "Freenet", the distributed peer-to-peer encrypted network (with built in darknet for those who want or need it). A third word, "Bitcoin", allows a thriving marketplace, and when proper laundries are in place, an effectively anonymous marketplace.

The mere fact of countries like the USA, where pornography cannot be banned, means that any attempt to ban it in another freeish place will be quite difficult.

    But that's technical stuff.

While I can understand the desire to eliminate gender stereotypes, and it is something I fully support, I don't see how banning pornography in the media can help. I also think that it's a wrong-headed move from a free speech point of view.

Pornography is not just men fucking women for the pleasure of other men. Human sexuality is so broad and varied, and porn is, as a consequence, broad and varied. Personally, I see porn as a positive thing in society, allowing people to experience their sexuality in the privacy of their own bedroom. A young teenage boy wondering whether it is really wrong, as his class mates, teachers, parents, and community say, for boys to like other boys, can find solace in the Internet. And jack-off to gay porn. And that's a good thing. Maybe a young teenage girl is wondering if her feelings towards some of her friends are normal. She can find lesbian, bisexual, and varied other porn on the Internet to help her confront her feelings. And that's a good thing. And the stories can be much broader than those as well.

I do object to a lot of porn out there. The degrading humiliating porn. The stuff where it looks like the female actor is actually not enjoying herself at all. But that does not mean the answer is to ban all porn.

So, you know all about tab-stops? There's something that I had to be taught. It's not exactly obvious what they are or how to use them. Especially if the ruler is hidden. Kids don't, they'll do what all the adults they know do, and format with spaces (trying, and failing, to get things to line up correctly).

What about styles? OK, admittedly the latest versions of MS Word have pushed styles to a more prominent position. But you know, I bet that most people who weren't taught to use styles (or picked it up from another place, like HTML and CSS) don't use them when doing word processing. And that includes kids. It's just so much easier to increase the font size or hit that bold button. OK, and what about the format paintbrush? People aren't using styles, so now all their headings are inconsistent. How to fix it? Manually check and change every property...

Or in a spreadsheet program, what about pinning rows or columns (I think it's called freezing in MS Excel). I had to be shown that was possible, and that was after I'd been using a spreadsheet program for years. It's just not obvious. I'll be showing someone that tomorrow, someone who currently copies the headings into another document so she doesn't have to scroll up and down this long spreadsheet when working with another system.

I was taught with two different systems, MS Office and ClarisWorks. For assignments, we could use either (and I used ClarisWorks generally). I was not taught to use either system though, I was taught to use a generic word processor, a generic spreadsheet program, etc. I am also a person who is willing to play around with stuff to see what's available. I'm a bit exceptional, I suspect most people just want to get their work done. They'll do as best they can, and use the one method they've found (even if it's not the best) from then on.

I watched someone use alt-tab to change windows, but then use the mouse and context menu to copy and paste.

Anyway, just like teaching typing is still important (because kids will pick something up, but proper tutoring will improve their method), so is teaching generic office suites.

I also provide various fake email addresses (mailinator ftw) and record them.

Basically, I could prove that I (Dr. Janet J. One of the big things about Khan and other massive online course systems is videos. Yes, videos. E.g. I once saw this 5 minute video explaining why dividing anything by zero was not defined. Rather than, plus infinity. I summarized it as:

Dividing by zero is undefined. Why? Well, let's divide by 1 by really small positive numbers.
    1/0.1 = 10
    1/0.01 = 100
    1/0.000001 = 1000000
So, it looks like, 1/0 could be infinity. But positive infinity.
Because, look at what happens when we divided by really small negative numbers
    1/-0.1 = -10
    1/-0.01 = -100
    1/-0.000001 = -1000000
So, maybe 1/0 should be negative infinity. But that doesn't match what we saw above. It can't be both, and it makes no sense to give it an arbitry value as that wouldn't work with the rest of mathematics.
    Therefore, undefined.

OK, so the question is: why videos? You are cutting off most of the world's population who do not have access to decent Internet and thus can't download and watch all these videos. If you provided text (even if just a transcript along with some screenshots where necessary) you would be able to reach a much bigger audience, including those who could benefit most.

Straight caffeine pills just knock me out and a few hours later make me angry. So needless to say I limit myself to occasional green teas. (Matcha!)

Red Bull has other stuff (like taurine) besides caffeine that might be the cause. The green tea making (do you have rituals?) might be part of what helps you keep going as well.

If my wife has a coffee after 6pm she will have trouble sleeping that night.

Do a controlled test. Give her a decafe, but don't tell her it's decafe. As normal, see if it affects her. Proper double blind tests have shown that students (it's always students because they are cheap) act as if decafe has caffeine, but that warm milk laced with caffeine is just warm milk (and thus helps them sleep).

My brothers can't operate with much less than 5+ cups of strong coffee per day.

Suggest that they wean themselves off the stuff. It's not healthy at those levels. Swap in a decafe instead of ordinary coffee, and then continue with the other 4+ cups for a bit. Then swap out another coffee for decafe, and repeat until only drinking decafe. It might be the taste and the associated feelings of relaxation they are really after (rather than the caffeine).

So needless to say within my reach are a pretty wide set of reactions to caffeine. The drug I would love to see studied even more is Chocolate.

I'd rather they studied THC and LCD more. Chocolate is legal, the other two should be.

Point of this post is that it might not just be the particular drug, it might also be the associations that the person has with the drug. Some people only smoke when drinking for example. Or smoke after sex (so /.ers wouldn't smoke in that case... haha).
